Stablecoins can make some cross-border transfers faster or reduce intermediary steps, but they are not automatically cheaper or quicker end to end. The recipient may still need to convert the token into local currency, and the costs and time for buying, converting, and cashing out can outweigh a low on-chain fee. Traditional domestic instant-payment systems can already be fast and inexpensive. Compare the complete route by its total cost, amount received, and time until the recipient can use the funds.
What is being compared?
A traditional cross-border payment may travel through the sender’s bank, one or more correspondent banks, and a receiving institution before the recipient can access the money. A stablecoin payment instead transfers a digital token between wallets or through a service arrangement. That wallet-to-wallet leg may avoid some intermediaries, but the full payment can still rely on providers to acquire the token, convert it, and deliver local currency.
The comparison depends on the route, not just the payment technology. A cross-border transfer through correspondent banks is a different case from a domestic transfer using a real-time payment system. The Federal Reserve describes correspondent banking’s costs and delays as consequences of the institutional structure, not a single fee schedule that applies to every transfer.
How do the fees compare?
Neither rail has one universal price. To compare them fairly, count every charge between the sender’s original funds and the recipient’s usable funds, including exchange rates and any deductions along the way.

| Cost to check | Traditional cross-border route | Stablecoin route |
|---|---|---|
| Sending or acquisition | Sending institution’s fee; the amount varies by institution and route. The Federal Reserve does not give a universal fee. | Cost to buy the token, including any service fee or exchange spread. The Federal Reserve does not give a universal fee. |
| Transfer and intermediaries | Correspondent or intermediary deductions may apply. Multiple institutions can also add processing and compliance overhead; no standard amount is established by the Federal Reserve. | Network fee for the wallet-to-wallet transfer, if any, plus charges from any service providers used. A low network fee alone does not establish the total cost. |
| Currency conversion and payout | Foreign-exchange spread and any receiving or cash-out charge. The Federal Reserve describes these as route-dependent costs, not a fixed schedule. | Conversion spread, liquidity, local payout fee, and the cost of managing foreign-exchange exposure. The Federal Reserve and BIS CPMI identify these as relevant to the full arrangement. |
For the stablecoin route, the receiving-side provider may also need to manage foreign-exchange risk. A transfer that is inexpensive on-chain may therefore cost more once the recipient converts the token and withdraws or spends local currency. The Federal Reserve’s analysis explains this distinction but does not establish a current, representative savings percentage for any corridor.
Which route is faster?
Stablecoin networks may permit transfers at any time and avoid sequential processing through multiple correspondent banks. In a Federal Reserve example, that can reduce the time until a recipient receives funds—but only when the recipient or receiving institution can use the stablecoin arrangement. Conversion and payout may add time after the token transfer.

Traditional cross-border transfers can be held up by correspondent processing, different operating schedules, and compliance checks. That does not mean every traditional transfer is slow. For domestic payments, the comparison can be very different: in a December 16, 2025 speech, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) said real-time systems such as India’s UPI already enable fast, low-cost, reliable payments, and that there was no reason to assume stablecoins would be better on cost, speed, or reliability in that domestic setting.
The useful measure is end-to-end time to usable funds, not the time for an on-chain transfer to be confirmed. Ask when the recipient can actually spend or withdraw the money in the needed currency.

What risks come with each route?
Stablecoin arrangements
- Redemption and value: A token’s target peg does not guarantee that it can always be redeemed at par. Issuer, reserve, liquidity, or market stress can affect redemption. The Federal Reserve discusses run and interconnection risks; BIS CPMI calls for appropriate risk treatment and oversight.
- Operations and settlement: A payment still depends on technology, service providers, liquidity, and settlement processes. BIS CPMI identifies operational, liquidity, and settlement risks for payment systems, including stablecoin arrangements.
- Access and interoperability: Access to a wallet, token, or on- and off-ramp is not universal. Different networks and arrangements can fragment access; a token on one network should not be assumed to work on another without an interoperable route. The IMF describes this as a lack of bank-deposit-like interoperability.
- Compliance and jurisdiction: Rules and supervision vary across countries and providers. That can affect onboarding, eligibility, processing, and whether a particular route can legally serve a user.
The BIS CPMI’s October 31, 2023 report says stablecoin benefits “must not be achieved by compromising on the principle of ‘same business, same risks or risk profile, same regulatory outcome’.” The principle is a reminder that a different payment technology does not remove the need to manage comparable risks.
Traditional payment routes
Correspondent-bank chains can add cost and delay, make it harder to track a payment, and involve repeated checks. The Federal Reserve also describes fixed costs associated with maintaining foreign banking and compliance capacity. These are structural frictions, not proof that every traditional route is costly or unreliable; domestic instant-payment schemes may be efficient.

Wider financial-system concerns
Beyond an individual transfer’s fee or delivery time, BIS and the IMF discuss possible effects of widespread foreign-currency stablecoin use, including pressure on monetary sovereignty, dollarization, contagion, and greater interconnection with the financial system. These are system-level concerns, distinct from whether a particular transfer reaches its recipient promptly.

Large transaction-volume estimates should not be read as a measure of everyday payment use. A BIS speech in 2026 put stablecoin transaction volume during 2025 at about $35 trillion, but estimated payment-related flows at around $390 billion and described those flows as a tiny fraction of traditional payment-system transaction volumes. The figures use different definitions; the $35 trillion total is not equivalent to $35 trillion of real-economy payments.

Separately, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System reported aggregate stablecoin market capitalization of $317 billion as of April 6, 2026, more than 50% growth since early 2025. Market capitalization is the value of tokens outstanding, not payment volume or proof of retail adoption.
How to compare two routes for your transfer
Use the same amount, sender currency, recipient currency, and payout outcome for each option. Check the actual quoted terms for the corridor and providers you can use; official policy analyses explain how costs and risks arise but do not provide current price quotes or controlled head-to-head delivery tests.
Quick Recap
- Confirm access: Check whether both sender and recipient can use the required bank, wallet, stablecoin, exchange, and cash-out service in their jurisdictions.
- Calculate total sender cost: Add sending, intermediary, network, conversion, and payout charges, including any spread built into an exchange rate.
- Compare the recipient’s net amount: Look at what arrives after foreign exchange, provider deductions, and local cash-out—not only the amount sent or token transferred.
- Check usable-funds timing: Ask when the recipient can spend or withdraw the funds in the required currency, including any service hours, compliance review, conversion, or payout wait.
- Check route resilience: Understand who holds the funds, how redemption works, what happens if a provider or network is unavailable, whether the payment can be reversed, and whether the recipient’s route is interoperable.
- Verify current terms: Provider fees, eligibility, availability, regulations, and stablecoin market conditions can change. Check the terms that apply to the specific transfer rather than relying on a general claim about either rail.
