For everyday spending with familiar, published terms, a traditional prepaid card is generally easier to evaluate: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes upfront fee disclosures and certain protections for covered accounts. A stablecoin card may suit someone who already holds stablecoins and wants to spend them, but its costs, custody, conversion, redemption, and dispute process depend on the specific provider. Neither category is automatically cheaper or safer, and stablecoin reserves are not the same thing as FDIC-insured deposits for cardholders.

What is the difference between a stablecoin card and a prepaid card?

A traditional prepaid card is funded before you spend. The category includes general-purpose reloadable cards, payroll cards, government-benefit cards, and other prepaid products. An open-loop card carries a payment-network logo and is broadly accepted where that network is supported; a closed-loop card works only at designated merchants or within a particular system. The CFPB notes that “Prepaid cards have different features, functions, and fees.” Its guide to choosing a card explains the differences to check.

“Stablecoin card” describes a product arrangement, not one standardized account type. A card may connect to a wallet or custodian that holds stablecoins and may convert them to fiat currency for spending, but the exact setup depends on the provider. The card issuer, stablecoin issuer, custodian, conversion route, redemption process, and card agreement can all differ. A network logo alone does not establish how the stablecoin balance is held or what happens when you spend.

How do the two options compare?

What to compare Traditional prepaid card Stablecoin card
Fees Possible charges include monthly, purchase, ATM, reload, inactivity, foreign-transaction, and replacement fees. Not every card charges every fee; check its fee chart and agreement. Not established for the category. Check the specific card and wallet terms for card fees, conversion costs or spread, and any redemption charges.
Acceptance and cash access Open-loop cards are broadly accepted wherever their network is supported; closed-loop cards are limited to designated merchants or systems. ATM access and reload options depend on the card. Not established for the category. Check the card network, supported locations, ATM access, and available ways to add or withdraw funds.
Registration and identity requirements Registration affects eligibility for certain protections and may matter when deposit insurance is offered. Check the specific card’s requirements. Product-specific; the terms for the card, wallet, and related services determine requirements.
How funds are held and accessed Prepaid funds may be held at a bank, but deposit-insurance eligibility depends on legal ownership and account records. Product-specific. Identify who holds the stablecoins or fiat, who controls access, and what happens if a custodian or service is unavailable.
Conversion and redemption Not applicable to spending an already-funded fiat prepaid balance; reload and withdrawal terms still vary by card. Product-specific. Check whether spending triggers conversion, the rate or spread, timing, and how and when you can redeem stablecoins for fiat.
Errors, unauthorized transactions, and account freezes Covered accounts have certain federal error-resolution rights; the card agreement explains how to report a problem and any additional network terms. Not established for the category. Read the card and wallet agreements for dispute procedures, freeze conditions, support channels, and access to funds during a dispute.
Insurance and provider failure FDIC coverage may apply to eligible funds if specific recordkeeping and ownership requirements are met. It covers failure of the insured bank, not every card or provider problem. Do not assume stablecoin reserves are insured deposits belonging to cardholders. The treatment of any separate bank account linked to a card depends on its own arrangement and records.

The stablecoin-card column is intentionally product-specific: the available evidence does not establish a category-wide fee schedule, custody model, redemption route, acceptance level, or dispute process. A fair comparison therefore starts with the terms for the actual card you are considering, not a claim that all stablecoin cards work alike.

Which fees should you check on a prepaid card?

The CFPB lists possible prepaid-card fees for monthly use, purchases or other transactions, ATM withdrawals and balance inquiries, cash reloads, customer service, inactivity, paper statements, declined transactions, card-to-card transfers, bill payment, stop payments, replacement cards, additional cards, foreign transactions, and cancellation. These are possible fees, not a claim that every card charges them. Consult the provider’s fee chart and cardholder agreement; the CFPB’s prepaid-account protections page describes required disclosures for covered accounts.

Compare the fees against a realistic month of your own use. For example, if you expect to withdraw cash, reload in person, or use the card abroad, check those specific charges rather than focusing only on a monthly fee. For a stablecoin card, also look for any conversion spread, conversion timing, or redemption charge in the relevant account terms; there is no category-wide figure established here.

What protections and insurance might apply?

Error resolution for covered prepaid accounts

Under CFPB rules, registered prepaid cards, payroll cards, and certain government-benefit cards have certain federal error-resolution rights for unauthorized transactions. Coverage and procedures depend on the account and applicable rules. Network-branded providers may offer additional terms, so check the cardholder agreement and how quickly the provider requires you to report a problem. The CFPB’s prepaid accounts rule explains the regulatory framework.

Conditional FDIC coverage for prepaid funds

Prepaid funds may qualify for FDIC deposit insurance if the required records disclose the custodial relationship, identify the actual owners and their amounts, and the deposits are legally owned by the cardholders. When those requirements are met, coverage is up to $250,000 per depositor, aggregated with the person’s other funds in the same ownership category at the same insured bank. The FDIC’s prepaid-card guidance, last updated May 13, 2020, explains these conditions.

That insurance protects against failure of the insured bank. It does not by itself protect you if a card is lost or stolen, or if the prepaid provider goes bankrupt. Registration and the actual account structure matter; do not treat a provider’s general statement about a bank relationship as proof that your funds qualify.

Stablecoin reserves are a separate question

On April 7, 2026, the FDIC proposed rules to implement parts of the GENIUS Act for FDIC-supervised permitted payment stablecoin issuers and institutions involved in related activities. The proposal addresses matters including reserves, redemption, capital, risk management, and custodial or safekeeping services. In the proposal, deposits held as reserves backing a payment stablecoin would not be insured to payment-stablecoin holders on a pass-through basis. That is a proposal, not a final-rule statement, and it concerns reserve deposits backing stablecoins; it does not settle the treatment of every stablecoin-card program or a distinct bank account that a card might use. See the FDIC’s proposal announcement and notice of proposed rulemaking.

What to verify before choosing a stablecoin card

Do not fund an account until you can answer these questions from the provider’s current terms and disclosures:

  • Total cost: What are the card, ATM, reload, foreign-transaction, conversion, and redemption charges? How is any conversion rate or spread calculated?
  • Supported use: Which stablecoins and payment networks are supported, where can the card be used, and what cash-access or reload options are available?
  • Control and custody: Who holds the stablecoins and any fiat balance? Who controls access, and what recourse do you have if the wallet, custodian, or card service is unavailable?
  • Conversion and redemption: When does conversion happen, how long can it take, and how do you redeem stablecoins for fiat? Are there limits or conditions?
  • Disputes and freezes: How do you report an unauthorized transaction or error? Under what conditions can the card or account be frozen, and what happens to your ability to redeem or withdraw funds during a freeze?
  • Failure scenarios: What do the agreements say about a lost card, a suspended service, a custodian’s insolvency, or the failure of a bank holding a separate account?
  • Eligibility: What registration or identity checks are required, and in which countries or U.S. locations is the service available?

If a card account is frozen, whether you can get stablecoins back depends on the named provider’s agreements and the reason for the freeze. There is no category-wide answer. Look for explicit redemption and withdrawal terms, restrictions during investigations, and a process for challenging an account restriction before you deposit funds.

How to decide

  • Choose a traditional prepaid card for easier comparison if you want a spending account with an inspectable fee chart and a defined framework for certain covered-account protections. Compare the actual fees, acceptance, reload and cash-access options, and eligibility terms.
  • Consider a stablecoin card only after checking the specific product if spending stablecoins you already hold is useful to you. Confirm the custody, conversion, redemption, dispute, geographic, and fee terms rather than relying on the label “stablecoin card.”
  • Do not choose based on assumed insurance or safety. Verify what entity holds each balance and what legal protections apply to that balance; stablecoin reserves do not automatically mean a cardholder has FDIC-insured funds.
