The embedded MCU was intended to process motion data and sensor-fusion algorithms locally, reducing work for a product’s host processor.
What the LIS331EB iNEMO-A was
STMicroelectronics announced the LIS331EB iNEMO-A on January 22, 2013. Its defining feature was the combination of a digital accelerometer and an ultra-low-power ARM Cortex-M0 in a 3 × 3 × 1 mm LGA package—9 mm³ by simple package-volume calculation. ST described the MCU as a sensor hub: instead of sending every task to the main processor, the device could handle motion-related processing within the sensor package.
At the time, ST General Manager Fabio Pasolini said: “Customers want smarter motion sensors that integrate both sensing and intelligent decision making in a single package.”
How the sensor hub was meant to work
An accelerometer measures acceleration along three axes. In the iNEMO-A design, the embedded MCU could run sensor-fusion algorithms using data from the accelerometer and companion sensors. ST said the hub could connect a 3-axis gyroscope, a 3-axis magnetometer and a pressure sensor, with temperature and humidity sensors as optional inputs.

Processing events and combining sensor readings near the sensors could reduce the work sent to a host controller or application processor. ST presented that division of work as a way to lower power use in portable motion-enabled products; the announcement does not provide a quantified power saving.

The FSMs and FIFO were intended to support custom gesture detection and a pedometer. ST also described an FSM-based wake-up path that could wake the MCU for power management, allowing a design to react to selected motion events without treating every sample as a host-processor task.

What products ST targeted
ST positioned the part for wearables, motion-activated phone and tablet interfaces, augmented reality and other custom motion-recognition designs. The compact package and onboard processing were relevant where board space, host workload and motion-triggered behavior mattered together. The announcement describes intended applications, not a guarantee that the part was adopted in any particular product.
How it differs from a standalone accelerometer and external MCU
The architectural trade-off is integration versus flexibility in component selection. With the LIS331EB, the accelerometer and MCU shared one package; a conventional design could instead use a standalone accelerometer and a separate MCU. The announcement does not provide a matched board-area or power benchmark, so the comparison below describes design characteristics rather than measured results.

Is the LIS331EB available today?
The available product details here come from STMicroelectronics’ January 22, 2013 announcement. ST said it planned to sample the device in Q2 2013 and quoted US$2.4 per unit at a 1,000-unit volume at launch. Those are historical launch details, not a current price or confirmation of present availability. The announcement does not establish whether LIS331EB production continues or whether distributors have stock today; check ST or an authorized distributor for current lifecycle and sourcing information before designing around the part.
