1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: An internal SSD is generally the better fit for a handheld’s primary storage, while a microSD card is the convenient way to add removable capacity. In ASUS’s published ROG Ally examples, games loaded a little faster from the SSD than from an SD card, but those manufacturer results are not a universal benchmark. First check your exact handheld’s supported card interface and SSD form factor: Steam Deck supports UHS-I microSD, while the 2023 ROG Ally lists a UHS-II reader and a 2230 NVMe SSD.
Is an SSD faster than a microSD card for handheld gaming?
Usually, an internal SSD has the performance advantage, but how noticeable that is depends on the device, game, card, and workload. ASUS publishes two ROG Ally SSD-versus-SD loading comparisons: one is 26.86 seconds on SSD and 27.92 seconds on SD; the other is 33.05 seconds on SSD and 34.52 seconds on SD. ASUS associates the examples with Cyberpunk 2077 and Control, but the page’s visible text does not clearly establish which title belongs to each timing pair. These are vendor-published examples, not independent tests, and they should not be treated as a prediction for other games or handhelds. ASUS ROG Ally (2023) product page
The figures illustrate the practical trade-off: an SD card can come close in these examples, but took longer. They do not show that every game will load similarly from a card, or that a faster-rated card will reach its advertised speed in every handheld. The device’s card-reader interface limits what the card can deliver.
Which storage option suits your use?
| Choose | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| microSD card | Adding capacity without opening the handheld, swapping libraries, or keeping less-played games separate. | The handheld’s supported microSD interface; do not assume a higher-rated card will run at its full rated speed. |
| Internal SSD | Primary storage, an integrated library, or prioritizing the device’s internal storage performance. | The exact model’s drive form factor and interface, plus service guidance and the replacement procedure before attempting an upgrade. |
Neither option is universally best. A removable card is convenient, but game performance can vary. An SSD upgrade may offer a more integrated solution, but compatibility and replacement effort are specific to the handheld.

Steam Deck LCD and OLED
Valve lists UHS-I microSD support and a microSD expansion slot for both the LCD and OLED Steam Deck. A UHS-II card should not be bought as a speed upgrade on the assumption that the Deck will use UHS-II speeds. The listed OLED configurations are 512GB and 1TB NVMe; the cited LCD specifications list 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB models. These are listed configurations, not stated maximum supported card or SSD capacities. Valve Steam Deck OLED Tech Specs · Valve Steam Deck Tech Specs
Those specifications establish microSD expansion, but do not provide a general end-user SSD replacement procedure. Check official service guidance for your exact model before planning an internal upgrade.

2023 ASUS ROG Ally
ASUS lists a UHS-II microSD reader for the 2023 ROG Ally and specifies a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD. Match a replacement drive to those specifications, and verify the exact model and replacement procedure before opening the device. Compare a compatible microSD card and compatible SSD at the same capacity using prices available in your location on the day you shop. The official product sources cited here do not establish current retail prices for either component, and prices vary by retailer and region. If price per gigabyte would help, divide each current price by its stated capacity; also account for usable capacity, compatibility, and the effort involved in replacing an internal drive.

Make the choice in three checks
- Identify the exact handheld and generation. Do not rely on specs for a similarly named model.
- Match the storage interface. Check the supported microSD interface for a card, or the required SSD form factor and interface for an internal drive.
- Choose for your priority. Pick microSD for easy removable expansion; consider an SSD for primary storage if it is compatible and you are prepared to follow model-specific service instructions.
