A Linksys router has no universal “Squid” switch. Squid runs on a separate computer or server on your LAN. For the simplest setup, give that host a stable LAN address and configure each browser or device to use the host as an explicit proxy. Automatic interception is a different network design: traffic must be redirected by the device that handles forwarding, and the documented Linux REDIRECT method is intended to run on the Squid machine itself.
Choose between an explicit proxy and interception
| Option | Client changes | Network requirements | Authentication | What the documented setup covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit forward proxy | Each supported client or application is configured with Squid’s address and port. | Normal LAN connectivity to the Squid host. | Proxy authentication can be used because the client is configured to answer proxy challenges. | Best choice for a small network, testing, and controlled use. |
| Transparent interception | Can avoid per-device proxy settings. | The gateway or a Linux forwarding device must steer eligible traffic to Squid. | Squid documentation says proxy authentication cannot be used on an intercepting listener. | The reviewed REDIRECT example targets TCP port 80 HTTP; it is not an HTTPS solution. |
If you only need a few browsers or devices to use Squid, use the explicit option. It is easier to verify and does not alter gateway forwarding for every client.
What you need before configuring anything
- An always-on computer or server on the LAN running Squid. The Linksys router itself is not automatically a Squid host.
- The exact Linksys model and firmware version. Linksys says settings and available features vary by model.
- Administrative access to the router and the Squid host.
- A plan for the Squid host’s LAN address and listening port.
If you do not already have a suitable always-on computer, a Linux-capable mini PC or small server is the relevant hardware category. Buying a new router is not justified until the required interception feature is confirmed for your exact model.
Give the Squid host a stable LAN address
Use a DHCP reservation in the Linksys interface so the Squid computer keeps the same address while still receiving its network settings from the router. Linksys documentation describes DHCP reservations in its advanced settings, but the menu names differ across models.

- Find the Squid computer in the router’s connected-device or DHCP-client list.
- Create a DHCP reservation for that device, or reserve its MAC address at the address you intend to use.
- Reconnect or renew the computer’s network lease.
- Record the resulting LAN address, for example
192.168.1.50. That example is illustrative; use the address assigned in your network.
Linksys documents Automatic Configuration–DHCP, PPPoE, and Static IP as common internet connection types. Those WAN choices are separate from the LAN address reservation needed by Squid.
Configure Squid for explicit proxy use
Install and start Squid on the chosen host using the package and service tools for that host’s operating system. In Squid’s configuration, deliberately set a listening port and access rules that permit only the LAN clients you intend to serve. Do not expose an unrestricted proxy to the internet.
Listener and access policy
- Choose a listener port and use the same port in every client configuration.
- Define ACLs for your local network and deny traffic that is not explicitly allowed by your policy.
- If you use proxy authentication, keep this as a normal forward-proxy listener rather than an intercepting listener.
- Confirm that the host firewall permits the selected port from the LAN, but not from untrusted networks.
Squid’s http_port documentation describes several listener modes. Its interception mode disables authentication on that listener, and the ACL documentation explains that browser-based proxy authentication cannot be used for interception because the browser was not configured to respond.

Configure a test client
- Open the operating system, browser, or application network settings.
- Choose the manual HTTP/HTTPS proxy option if the application supports it. Some applications use system proxy settings; others require their own settings.
- Enter the reserved LAN address of the Squid host and the configured listening port.
- Save the setting and load a normal HTTP page.
- Check Squid’s access log while making the request. A request appearing there confirms that the client reached Squid.
Proxy support is application-specific. A device can be online while an individual application ignores the operating system’s proxy setting.
Why automatic interception is harder with a separate Linksys router
In the common topology, the Linksys is the default gateway and Squid is another machine on the LAN. Client traffic reaches the Linksys first, so a REDIRECT rule running only on the Squid computer cannot automatically capture that traffic. The Squid Web Cache Wiki states: “NAT configuration will only work when used on the squid box.”
For interception, one of these conditions must be true:
Rank #3
- Provides up to 1,500 square feet of Wi-Fi coverage for 15plus wireless devices
- Works with existing modem, simple setup through Linksys App
- Enjoy 4K HD streaming, gaming and more in high quality without buffering
- Tri band technology delivers the fastest combined Wi-Fi speeds to all your devices
- Tri band Wi-Fi speeds up to 2.2 Gbps (5 GHz / 400 Mbps) plus (5 GHz / 867 Mbps) plus (2.4 GHz / 867 Mbps)
- The traffic reaches a Linux forwarding device that also runs the NAT and REDIRECT rules.
- The gateway supports a compatible method, such as policy routing or a documented WCCP-style architecture, to steer eligible traffic to Squid.
- The topology is changed so the Squid machine also performs the gateway or forwarding role.
The generic Linksys support material does not establish that every Linksys model supports policy routing, WCCP, or redirection to a separate Squid host. Do not apply gateway-specific commands until the exact model and firmware documentation confirms the required feature.
What the documented REDIRECT example does—and does not—cover
The reviewed Squid interception example describes redirecting TCP port 80 traffic, which is ordinary HTTP. It does not provide a recipe for transparently inspecting HTTPS.
- Redirecting port 80 does not decrypt encrypted HTTPS sessions.
- HTTPS interception requires separate certificate generation, installation of client trust, compatible Squid configuration, and an explicit security and privacy policy.
- Do not assume that an HTTP REDIRECT rule will handle HTTPS simply because both use a web browser.
Test in a reversible order
- Verify that the Squid service is running and listening on the selected LAN address and port.
- From one client, configure the explicit proxy and make a test request.
- Confirm the request in Squid’s access log and verify that ordinary internet access still works when the proxy is removed.
- Only after the explicit path works, map the forwarding topology for any interception design.
- Apply network-wide redirection only when you have a documented gateway method and a way to restore the previous forwarding rules.
If connectivity fails after a routing change, remove or disable the new redirection rules and restore the Linksys as the normal gateway before continuing diagnosis.

Common mistakes
Configuring the Linksys as if it were Squid
The router normally supplies LAN gateway, DHCP, and internet connectivity. Squid remains a service on a separate host unless your hardware and firmware explicitly support another arrangement.
Using a changing host address
If the Squid computer receives a different DHCP address, every client pointing to the old address will stop using it. Reserve the address first.
Expecting interception to support authentication
An intercepting listener cannot rely on the browser’s normal proxy-authentication exchange. Use an explicitly configured forward proxy when authentication is required.

Redirecting all web traffic without a rollback plan
Start with one client and inspect logs. A mistaken forwarding rule can interrupt the whole LAN, so preserve access to the gateway and the host console.
Practical recommendation
For most Linksys networks, keep the Linksys as the gateway, run Squid on a stable LAN computer, and configure only the clients that need the proxy. Treat transparent interception as a specialist topology project that depends on the exact router or on a Linux device performing forwarding. The available documentation supports HTTP port-80 interception in the appropriate Linux topology, not a blanket promise of automatic HTTPS handling on every Linksys model.
