Both Sprout Social and Hootsuite offer shared inbox workflows for social conversations, but their documented comment coverage and plan features differ. Sprout Social explicitly describes moderating comments on owned profiles and paid ads through Smart Inbox. Hootsuite documents comment handling across Inbox and Streams, with YouTube moderation handled through Streams. The better fit depends on the networks and comment types your team needs to cover, plus its routing and reporting requirements—not on a universal claim of platform parity.
This comparison reflects the vendors’ official feature and plan documentation reviewed on October 7, 2026. Capabilities can depend on network permissions, integrations, and current plan terms.
How do the comment-management workflows differ?
Sprout Social: Smart Inbox
Sprout Social describes Smart Inbox as a shared stream for incoming comments, direct messages, and mentions from connected profiles. Teams can use custom views to focus on conversations, review contact and conversation context, mark messages complete, and see when a teammate is viewing or responding to a conversation. The feature list includes moderation of comments on owned profiles and paid ads through Smart Inbox. Sprout Social Smart Inbox Sprout Social features

Sprout Social also lists Brand Keywords for searches across X by keyword, hashtag, and location. That is a monitoring capability; it should not be treated as equivalent to moderation controls for comments on an owned post.

Hootsuite: Inbox and Streams
Hootsuite describes Inbox as a place to handle public and private messages. Its documentation covers comments on several networks, while YouTube moderation is described through Streams rather than Inbox. Hootsuite also documents monitoring on X, but monitoring a mention does not establish that the same controls are available as for comments on an owned post. Hootsuite Inbox documentation
Which platforms and comment types are documented?
The table summarizes the capabilities described in the vendors’ documentation; it is not a guarantee that every interaction will appear for every connected account. Network permissions and integrations can affect what a team can see or do.
Rank #2
| Network or comment type | Sprout Social | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|
| Owned-profile or organic comments | Comment moderation on owned profiles through Smart Inbox is listed. | Inbox documentation identifies public comments on Facebook Pages, Instagram, TikTok videos owned by the account, LinkedIn, and Threads. |
| Paid or dark-post comments | Paid-ad comment moderation through Smart Inbox is listed; the feature listing does not specify the networks in this description. | Inbox documentation identifies public comments on Facebook and Instagram paid or dark posts. |
| YouTube comments | The cited feature descriptions do not establish YouTube comment coverage. | Streams supports replying, hiding or removing comments, reporting spam, and moderating comments before publication. |
| Mentions beyond post comments | Smart Inbox includes mentions from connected profiles; Brand Keywords can search X by keyword, hashtag, and location. | Hootsuite documentation refers to X monitoring and mentions; it does not establish that mention monitoring provides the same controls as owned-post comment moderation. |
Hootsuite notes restrictions for TikTok. For either service, verify the exact account type, connected network, and required actions—such as reply, hide, delete, or pre-publication moderation—before treating a channel as covered.

How should a team choose between them?
Start with the conversations your team must handle, not the number of features on a product page. Use this checklist for each required network:
- Does the inbox surface comments on organic posts, paid or dark posts, and the relevant video formats?
- Can agents perform the exact action needed—reply, hide, remove, report spam, or moderate before publication?
- Does the team need to monitor mentions that are not comments on its own posts?
- Will conversations need assignment or automated routing, and does the team need safeguards against duplicate replies?
- Which response measures matter: volume, completion, engagement, team productivity, or helpdesk-connected reporting?
- Which current plan includes each necessary capability, and are add-ons or Enterprise terms required?
Then validate the workflow with the accounts the team will actually connect. A unified inbox does not necessarily capture every interaction on every network, and a vendor’s monitoring description should not be assumed to include the same moderation actions as its owned-post comment tools.

The comparison is based on vendor descriptions, not independent hands-on testing. Sprout Social’s Smart Inbox page summarizes a Forrester Total Economic Impact study as finding a 10% productivity gain for customer service specialists using its Smart Inbox workflows. The page does not state the study year; that vendor-reported figure should not be treated as a general result for every team. Sprout Social Smart Inbox
