Spotify’s compressed streams use lossy encoding, which reduces audio data to make playback more efficient—but that does not mean most of a song’s meaningful sound disappears. Since 2025, Premium subscribers in supported markets can also choose Lossless playback, up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Whether that sounds different depends on the recording, settings, connection, playback device, and listener.
What does Spotify mean by deleting audio data?
Most tracks in Spotify’s catalog use Ogg/Vorbis, according to its developer documentation. Vorbis is a lossy format: it reduces the amount of audio data needed for playback. That is different from deleting parts of the original song in a way that makes the track obviously incomplete. The available evidence does not establish how much data is discarded from every track or how much of that data any listener would notice.
Lossless playback takes a different approach. Spotify’s Premium Lossless option delivers eligible music in FLAC, preserving the audio data in the delivered lossless file. It does not restore information absent from the source recording, and a higher technical specification by itself does not guarantee a more enjoyable or noticeably different sound.
Spotify audio quality options compared
Spotify publishes approximate quality equivalents for its in-app settings and separate figures for the web player. These are published settings, not a guarantee that every device or circumstance uses an identical stream.

The compressed in-app figures and web-player AAC figures describe different playback contexts. Do not treat the numbers as a simple, universal ranking of how good a song must sound: the codec, source, playback path, and processing also matter. Can you hear the difference between Very High and Lossless?
Sometimes a listener may notice a difference; it is not assured. Spotify says that the original recording, a lossless-compatible device, connection type, and network conditions affect playback. Its support answer is explicit: “Lossless offers high technical fidelity, but it doesn’t always translate to a dramatically different listening experience for everyone.”

No verified controlled listening-test percentage establishes how many Spotify listeners can distinguish Very High from Lossless. So claims that nobody can hear it—or that everyone will hear more detail—go beyond what is established here. If the two settings sound the same to you, that is a valid result for your setup and listening conditions, not proof that the stream formats are technically identical.
Why Lossless may sound the same—or fail to play as intended
The playback path can re-compress the signal
Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers for its lossless playback. In its September 10, 2025 launch announcement, Spotify said Bluetooth did not provide enough bandwidth in the documented setup, so the signal had to be compressed before transmission. That describes Spotify’s stated situation at launch, not a permanent limitation of every Bluetooth standard or future device.

Lossless can be enabled for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads, but the entire path matters. A Bluetooth link may compress the signal even when the app is set to Lossless. Wired playback avoids that particular Bluetooth step; compatibility with the phone, computer, headphones, or speakers still matters.
Network conditions and data use matter
Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps internet connection for the best Lossless listening experience. That recommendation is not a promise of audible improvement or uninterrupted playback. Spotify says higher streaming quality uses more data and higher-quality downloads take more storage. The app adjusts quality by default to avoid stuttering; if playback buffers, Spotify suggests lowering the quality or improving the connection.

The recording and playback processing can mask comparisons
A comparison is less useful if the versions use different masters, playback levels, or device processing. Spotify applies loudness normalization across compressed and lossless playback on supported paths, but says the web player and some third-party devices do not apply its normalization. Its Premium normalization settings are Normal at -14 dB LUFS, Loud at -11 dB LUFS, and Quiet at -19 dB LUFS; Spotify says its target uses the ITU 1770 standard. For mastering, Spotify says it leaves 1 dB of headroom for lossy encodings. These are processing details, not evidence that one setting will be perceptibly better for every track.

- Open Spotify’s Settings & Privacy.
- Choose Media Quality.
- For the relevant playback type—Wi-Fi, cellular, or downloads—select Lossless.
- Repeat the setting on each device where you want Lossless. For a third-party device, use its Spotify Connect device settings.

How to make a fair listening comparison
- Use the same recording and master in both modes.
- Keep playback volume matched; a louder version can seem clearer even when the difference is only level.
- Use a path that can carry Lossless, such as a compatible wired setup, rather than assuming a Bluetooth connection remains lossless.
- Check whether Spotify normalization is active on the devices being compared; the web player and some third-party devices do not apply it.
- Listen under stable network conditions, and note the settings and connection used instead of treating one result as universal.
There is no need to buy new headphones just to use Spotify: its compressed modes remain options, and equipment should be chosen for practical compatibility and preference, not on a promise that it will reveal an audible difference.

- Choose a compressed setting if conserving mobile data or download storage, or avoiding buffering, matters more than preserving a lossless stream.
- Try Lossless if you have Premium access, it is available for your account and device, your connection is stable, and your playback path supports it.
- Keep the setting that works for you. A technically lossless file is not a guarantee of a dramatic audible change, and Spotify’s own guidance recognizes that listeners’ experiences differ.
