SpMp is an independent, open-source YouTube Music client for Android and desktop, known for customizable themes and song metadata. The official project repository says SpMp has not been maintained since late 2024 and names Kanon as its successor, so its listed features should not be taken as proof that they still work reliably. A notice in a third-party fork also reports that streaming usually does not work after YouTube API changes.
What is SpMp?
SpMp is an independent YouTube Music client built with Compose Multiplatform. It is not an official YouTube or Google app; the project explicitly disclaims affiliation with, funding by, authorization by, or endorsement from either company. The project is open source under GPLv3, which F-Droid lists as GNU General Public License v3.0 only. SpMp’s GitHub repository · F-Droid listing
Is SpMp still maintained, and does it work?
The official repository says SpMp has not been maintained since late 2024 and has been succeeded by Kanon. It cautions that users may encounter bugs or broken features that will not be fixed. That status is the repository’s statement; it could change if development resumes.
Playback reliability is also uncertain. A notice in the third-party Cat Music fork says that, until a fix is implemented, streaming music in SpMp “usually doesn’t work,” attributing the issue to YouTube API changes that make audio streaming from third-party apps more difficult. This is the fork’s report, not a verified claim about every installation, user, or region.

It includes colours drawn from the current song’s thumbnail, custom colours applied globally or per song, and separate languages for the interface and metadata such as song titles. Users can edit song, artist, and playlist names. These are documented features, not confirmation that each still functions in an unmaintained build.

The SpMp repository identifies Kanon as its successor and describes it as “a rewrite-turned-successor of SpMp” that shares SpMp’s basic features and core design. That does not establish that Kanon is identical to SpMp, supports every SpMp feature, or can import SpMp data. The repository’s successor notice is the basis for the relationship; check Kanon’s own current documentation for its platform support and compatibility before switching.
