“Split your screen into two screens” can mean either placing two app windows side by side on one display or extending your desktop across two physical displays. On Windows, use Snap for the first job and Windows key + P > Extend for the second. On a Mac, use window tiling or Split View for two apps, and System Settings > Displays to arrange an extended desktop. Choose the one-display steps if you just need to compare two things; choose the external-display steps if you want a separate, persistent work surface.
How do I split my screen into two screens?
First decide whether you mean two windows on one monitor or one desktop spread across two monitors. These are different setups: window tiling rearranges apps on the display you already have, while extending a desktop requires a connected, compatible second display.
- Two windows on one display: use Windows Snap and Snap Assist, or macOS window tiling or Split View.
- Two physical displays: connect the second display, arrange it in your operating system’s display settings, and choose an extended desktop rather than mirroring.
A tiled screen is usually the simpler choice for a short task, such as reading a reference while writing. A second monitor is useful when you want a reference, communication window, monitoring view, or preview to remain visible beside your main workspace. Those are workflow choices, not a guarantee of a particular productivity increase.

If you are unsure which setup you need, ask what you want to keep visible and whether it needs to stay there throughout your work. A temporary comparison can fit in two windows on one display. If you regularly move between a main task and a separate reference or communication surface, an extended desktop may be more convenient. You can also use both approaches together: Snap or tile windows on each display after extending the desktop.

How do I put two windows side by side in Windows?
Open both apps and use Snap to place one window on each side of the display. Snap Assist then helps you fill the remaining space with the other open app.
Use Snap with a mouse
- Open the two apps you want to view.
- Drag the first window to the left or right edge of the screen. When the Snap layout appears, release the window.
- Choose the second app from Snap Assist to fill the open half.
- Drag the divider between the windows if you want to give one app more room than the other.
The two apps share the available display area, so each window will be narrower than when maximized. If one app needs more room—for example, a document you are editing while consulting a shorter reference—adjust the divider rather than assuming both sides must stay equal. If a window is covering the other, snap it again or select the second app from the available choices.
Use keyboard shortcuts
Select a window and press Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap it to a side. Use Windows key + Up Arrow or Windows key + Down Arrow to move through additional positions. If the other app does not fill the remaining area automatically, select it from the available windows.
Keyboard snapping is useful when you do not want to drag a window precisely to the edge. It also provides a quick way to move the selected window between positions. After placing the first app, choose the second app for the remaining space and adjust the divider if needed.
Choose a layout in Windows 11
Windows 11 offers Snap layouts for arranging windows in more than one pattern. Hover over the window’s maximize button or press Windows key + Z, choose a layout, and then place open apps in its remaining zones. The available layout choices depend on the space and screen you are using.
How do I split screen on Windows 11?
For a quick two-app layout, snap one window to a side and choose the other app in Snap Assist. If you want a different arrangement, use the Windows 11 Snap layouts menu.
- Open the apps you want to use.
- Hover over the first app’s maximize button, or press Windows key + Z.
- Select the layout that fits your task and choose a zone for the first app.
- Select another open app to fill a remaining zone. Resize the arrangement by dragging a divider where available.
For the simplest left-right split, the keyboard shortcut or dragging a window to the edge can be quicker than opening the layout menu. Use the layout menu when you want to place several windows or prefer to choose the arrangement before filling it.

Snap layouts arrange windows on the current display; they do not add a physical monitor or extend the desktop. If an app is not listed when you are filling a zone, switch to it and place it in the layout, or choose another open app. If your goal is a second physical screen, follow the display-connection steps below instead.

How do I split screen on a Mac?
Use window tiling to place apps beside one another, or choose Split View when you want two apps side by side in full screen with other apps out of the way. Mission Control helps you find open windows and manage separate desktops, also called spaces.
Tile windows side by side
- Open the apps you want to arrange.
- Drag an app window toward an edge of the display. macOS can suggest a tiled position.
- Place the other app in the remaining space if you want a two-window view.
Use Split View
Choose Split View when you want to focus on two apps in a full-screen side-by-side arrangement. Apple describes Split View as using two apps side by side in full screen. If you need to move among other open windows or keep different groups of work separate, use Mission Control to view windows and create or switch between desktops.
Window tiling and Split View both put apps side by side, but they serve slightly different preferences: tiling is a straightforward way to arrange windows, while Split View gives the two selected apps a dedicated full-screen workspace.
For example, use tiling if you want to keep arranging other windows around your work, and choose Split View if you want to concentrate on a pair of apps with other apps out of the way. Mission Control is useful when the two-app arrangement is only one part of a larger workflow: it gives you a way to see open windows and move between separate spaces. These options manage windows on the Mac’s current display; connecting another monitor is a separate setup.
How do I use two monitors with my laptop?
Connect the second monitor directly to the laptop or through a compatible dock, then set the operating system to extend the desktop. Before choosing a dock, adapter, or cable, check the laptop’s ports and display capabilities; having a connector that looks familiar does not establish that every display arrangement will work.
A dock is one possible way to connect displays and other peripherals, not a requirement for every two-monitor setup. If the laptop has a compatible video connection and supports the display configuration, a direct connection may be sufficient. If you need an adapter or dock, confirm it supports the computer and the number and type of displays you plan to use. Do not assume every USB-C port carries video or that a dock designed for one computer will work with another.
Set up two physical displays in Windows
- Connect both displays to the computer, directly or through a compatible dock. Check that the monitor and dock have power and that the cables are seated.
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify to see which numbered display corresponds to each physical screen.
- Drag the display icons so their on-screen positions match the monitors’ positions on your desk—for example, place the second display icon to the left if that monitor is physically on your left.
- Select Apply.
- Press Windows key + P and choose Extend for a desktop that spans the displays.
Matching the display arrangement to the desk makes the pointer move in the direction you expect when crossing between screens. If both monitors should show the same image instead, choose Duplicate; it mirrors rather than extending the desktop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse Identify before rearranging the icons if you are not sure which screen is which. Then position the icons to reflect the physical layout, including whether one screen sits above another. The arrangement controls where the pointer can cross between screens; an unexpected crossing direction usually means the icons do not match the desk layout.

Windows can remember window locations when the monitor connection changes. If you use a laptop both at a dock and on its own, look under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays for the setting related to remembering window locations. This can help keep the transition between the connected displays and the laptop screen more orderly.
Set up two physical displays on a Mac
- Connect the display to power and to the Mac with a compatible video cable. If the connector does not match an available Mac port, use a suitable adapter.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Arrange the display icons to match the monitors’ physical positions.
- Select a display, open Use as, and choose the extended-desktop option instead of mirroring.
Apple supports extending the desktop across two or more displays, but the number a particular Mac can support depends on the Mac model and the displays’ resolution and refresh rate. Check those limits for the exact computer before buying a dock or planning a multi-display arrangement.
Check the computer model before shopping, not just the connector type. The usable display count can depend on the Mac as well as the resolution and refresh rate you want from the displays. A monitor, cable, adapter, or dock may fit physically without supporting the full arrangement you intend to use. For that reason, there is no universal dock or adapter recommendation that applies to every Mac.

On Windows, press Windows key + P and choose Extend. On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select a display, and use Use as to choose the extended-desktop option rather than mirroring.
Extending gives you separate screen space: you can move items between displays and position different apps on each. Duplicating or mirroring shows the same content on each screen, which is useful when you want both displays to present the same view but does not create that separate workspace.
On Windows, the other choices in the Windows key + P menu include PC screen only and Second screen only. Those modes use one screen rather than creating an extended desktop across both. If a connected display is working but the desktop is not independent, check that the mode is set to Extend, not Duplicate.
Why is my second monitor not detected?
Start with power and connections, then check the operating system’s display settings. If the display is still missing, use the system’s detection controls and verify that the computer, adapter, dock, and display combination supports the setup you want.
Windows checks
- Confirm that the monitor and dock have power and that the cables are connected correctly.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Under Multiple displays, select Detect if the screen is missing.
- Check Windows Update, then return to Display settings.
- Press Windows key + P and make sure the selected mode is appropriate. PC screen only and Second screen only restrict which screen is active; Duplicate mirrors; Extend creates a multi-screen desktop.
- If the pointer crosses to the wrong side, revisit Display settings and correct the arrangement of the display icons.
If the monitor still does not appear, check the connection path from computer to screen: the display, cable, adapter, and dock all need to be appropriate for the intended setup. On a laptop dock, reseat the connections and confirm the dock and monitor have power before treating the issue as a software problem. Recheck Display settings after Windows Update.

Mac checks
- Confirm that the display has power and that the cable or adapter is connected correctly.
- Open System Settings > Displays and check whether the Mac recognizes the external display.
- If it does not appear, use Apple’s documented Option-key Detect Displays control.
- Check the Mac model’s supported display count and the displays’ resolution and refresh-rate requirements before concluding that a dock is defective.
A display that is not recognized may reflect a connection or compatibility limit rather than a failed monitor. Confirm that the Mac supports the number of displays and the resolution and refresh rate in the planned setup. If the setup depends on a dock or adapter, check that specific connection path too.
Do I need a docking station for two monitors?
Not necessarily. A monitor can connect directly if the computer has a compatible video connection and supports the intended display setup; a dock is one possible connection path, not a universal requirement.
Before choosing a dock or adapter, check the computer model, operating system, available ports, desired number of displays, and target resolution and refresh rate. For a Mac in particular, Apple says supported display count depends on the Mac model and the displays’ resolution and refresh rate. Compatibility also depends on the connection path, so do not assume that every laptop port carries video or that every dock works with every computer.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A sensible buying checklist is:
- Computer: identify the exact laptop or Mac model and confirm its display limits.
- Ports: check which video-capable connections are available, and whether an adapter is needed to match the monitor.
- Displays: decide how many screens you want and check their resolution and refresh rate.
- Connection path: verify that the cable, adapter, or dock supports the computer-to-display arrangement you plan to use.
The hardware requirement is a second display plus a compatible way to connect it; a dock may be useful if it provides that connection path, but it is not automatically required. If you are comparing products, categories such as a USB-C dual-monitor docking station, an external monitor, or a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter are possible starting points—not universal recommendations. Match the purchase to your exact computer and display configuration before ordering.

Use one display with tiled windows when you need a quick, portable arrangement and do not want extra hardware. Choose two physical displays when you need a persistent second surface and your computer supports the connection.
| Consideration | Two windows on one display | Two physical displays |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Uses the display you already have. | Needs a second display and a compatible connection path. |
| Workspace | Both apps share one screen, so each gets part of it. | An extended desktop gives apps separate physical surfaces. |
| Portability | Easy to use away from a desk. | A monitor-and-dock arrangement is generally more stationary. |
| Adjustment | Snap or Split View provides a quick arrangement; window size is limited by the display. | Allows persistent placement and independent sizing across displays. |
| Compatibility checks | Requires supported window-management features in the operating system. | Requires checking ports, adapters, docks, display count, resolution, and refresh rate. |
A practical rule is to tile windows for short-lived comparisons—such as a document beside a reference page—and use a second display when you routinely need a separate reference, communication, monitoring, or preview surface beside your main work. Neither arrangement guarantees a fixed productivity gain; the useful choice depends on what needs to remain visible and on the hardware available.
For work away from a desk, window tiling avoids carrying or setting up a second display. At a desk, two physical screens provide separate surfaces that can keep a reference or preview visible while the main app remains open. Snap, Split View, and an extended desktop are ways to arrange work; none of them guarantees a particular result for every task. Choose the setup that makes the apps you actually use easy to see and that your computer can support.

Can I use different apps on each monitor when my displays are extended?
Yes. An extended desktop provides separate screen space, so you can move items between displays and keep different apps on each. If you want the same image on both screens, choose Duplicate or mirroring instead.
Will a USB-C port always let me connect a monitor?
No. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that the port supports video output. Check the computer’s specifications and the capabilities of the cable, adapter, or dock for the display configuration you need.
Can I keep my windows in place when I disconnect a laptop from a dock?
Windows has a setting under Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays for remembering window locations when a monitor connection changes. The setting is useful for laptop users who switch between a desk setup and the laptop screen.
