Close Spotify and start with spicetify backup apply after a Spotify update; the fix for other failures depends on what went wrong.
Work through these seven fixes in order, using a terminal appropriate to your operating system.
1. Initialize Spicetify correctly after installing Spotify
Spicetify needs Spotify to create its normal application files before it can make a backup or apply customizations. On a fresh Spotify installation, open Spotify, sign in, and leave it running for at least 60 seconds.
Then close Spotify and run these commands:
- spicetify
- spicetify backup apply
The first command initializes Spicetify. The backup creates a clean copy of Spotify, while apply injects your themes, extensions, custom apps, and other changes.

If the first command reports that Spotify cannot be found, skip to the installation-path fixes below rather than repeatedly running apply.
2. Reapply Spicetify after every Spotify update
A Spotify update can replace the files that Spicetify modified. Spotify may open normally while the Marketplace tab, theme, extensions, or custom apps disappear.
Close Spotify and run:
spicetify backup apply
If that does not restore the customization, particularly after updating Spicetify with Homebrew, AUR, another package manager, or a normal package update, reset Spotify to its vanilla state and rebuild the backup:
spicetify restore backup apply
restore removes Spicetify’s modifications and returns Spotify to its unmodified state. It preserves your Spicetify configuration and customization files, so you can apply them again afterward.

The backup-and-apply sequence recreates the required clean backup before applying modifications.
3. Use upgrade, not update, to upgrade Spicetify
The command names are easy to confuse:

| spicetify update | Hot-reloads theme changes without a full restart. |
| spicetify upgrade | Upgrades Spicetify itself. |
After spicetify update, reload Spotify with Ctrl + Shift + R. On macOS, use Cmd + Shift + R.
To upgrade Spicetify itself, run spicetify upgrade. This works only with script-based installations. If you installed Spicetify through Homebrew, AUR, Scoop, or another package manager, update it through that same package manager instead.

4. Replace the Microsoft Store Spotify edition
The Microsoft Store edition of Spotify is a common reason Spicetify fails on Windows. Its packaging and file locations can prevent Spicetify from accessing or patching the files it needs.
- Uninstall the Microsoft Store version of Spotify completely.
- Download and install the standard Windows desktop client from Spotify’s website.
- Open it, sign in, and leave it running for at least 60 seconds.
- Close Spotify and run spicetify backup apply.
For the website-installed client, check whether this preferences file exists:
C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify\prefs
If it exists, set its absolute path in config-xpui.ini:

prefs_path = C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify\prefs
If you are unsure where Spicetify’s configuration file is located, run spicetify -c.
On Linux, search for the preferences file by running cd ~ and then find | grep “spotify/prefs$”. Copy the returned absolute path into the prefs_path field in config-xpui.ini.
5. Correct Spotify’s installation path
Spicetify cannot patch Spotify if spotify_path points to an old, empty, or different installation. This commonly happens when Spotify was installed through Scoop, a package manager, or a different installer than the one Spicetify detected.

Display the paths Spicetify currently knows about:
spicetify path
spicetify path spotify
spicetify path userdata
For a Scoop installation, retrieve the actual Spotify directory in PowerShell with scoop prefix spotify.
Then set that returned directory explicitly. For example:
spicetify config spotify_path “C:\Users\<username>\scoop\apps\spotify\current”
Run the path command again to confirm the setting, then rebuild and apply with spicetify backup apply.
If Spotify was moved, reinstalled, or upgraded through another source, check that the configured path contains the current Spotify files rather than a previous installation directory.
6. Repair Marketplace, extensions, and custom apps
Marketplace is a tab in Spotify’s sidebar. Installing Marketplace does not automatically activate every theme, extension, or custom app listed there; each customization must be installed or enabled and then applied.

Enable an extension by filename:
spicetify config extensions <filename.js>
spicetify apply
For custom apps, use:

Each custom-app folder must contain, at minimum, index.js and manifest.json.
Enable it with:
spicetify config custom_apps <folder-name>
spicetify apply
Both config extensions and config custom_apps append entries; they do not replace the existing list. To remove a broken item, append a hyphen to its name:
spicetify config extensions <filename.js>-
spicetify config custom_apps <folder-name>-
If a custom app is missing, verify its folder location and manifest.json, run spicetify apply, and restart Spotify. If it appears but does not load, open Spotify’s developer tools with Ctrl + Shift + I. Look for JavaScript syntax errors. A working custom app must export a render() function.
7. Isolate an unsupported Spotify version or broken customization
If spicetify backup apply and spicetify update still fail after a Spotify update, the new Spotify release may not yet be supported. Compatibility work may still be in progress, especially when no newer Spicetify release is available.
Check the installed version and available command syntax:
spicetify –version
spicetify –help
spicetify –help config
A theme or extension can also be the problem. Test one extension by applying only it:

spicetify apply -e myExtension.js
For a broken theme or extension, restore Spotify first and then apply the clean backup without the suspect customization:
spicetify restore
spicetify backup apply
If Spotify works after this, re-enable themes, extensions, and custom apps one at a time until the failure returns. That identifies the incompatible item.
For theme development, spicetify watch monitors color.ini and user.css in the current theme folder and automatically applies changes. It is useful for theme editing, but it will not repair an unsupported Spotify version or a damaged installation.

Why does Spicetify stop working after Spotify updates?

Can Spicetify work with Spotify from the Microsoft Store?
