Your home doesn’t need a fancy makeover for Diwali. In her Spectator column for Hindustan Times Brunch, Seema Goswami suggests making small, considered changes—refreshing fabrics, reusing textiles and moving plants—rather than replacing furniture. Refresh the living room with textiles
Goswami’s easiest route to a different-looking room is to keep the furniture and change what covers or surrounds it. New cushion covers, a rug or colourful throws can update a sofa or chairs without replacing them. If you want a more substantial change, she suggests reupholstering the existing seating.
The sequence offers a practical way to choose: start with the textiles you can swap or add, and consider upholstery only if you want a larger change. The column gives no prices or measured effort comparisons, so treat these as qualitative options rather than budget guarantees.

Give the dining table a new colour scheme
A fresh tablecloth paired with matching placemats and napkins can make the dining area feel newly dressed for the festival. Goswami presents new crockery as an optional, bigger step—not a prerequisite for changing the table’s look.

Repurpose textiles you already own
Rather than buying new decor, the column proposes giving existing pieces another role: an old sari can become a sheer for a window, while a particularly beautiful scarf can be framed as wall art. These ideas depend on the textile and the room, but they make use of items already at home instead of treating new curtains or a painting as essential.
Change the room with plants
Goswami recommends rotating indoor plants to give a room a fresh feel. She names an areca palm and a plant with variegated leaves as examples. The suggestion is to rearrange what you have, not to follow a prescribed plant-care or purchasing plan.
