SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn launch preparations were delayed by a helium leak in ground equipment at Kennedy Space Center—not by a reported leak aboard the crew’s Dragon spacecraft. The resemblance to Boeing Starliner’s helium leaks ends at the gas involved: Starliner’s leaks were in its in-flight propulsion system, and NASA later chose to return that capsule without its crew.

Where the Polaris Dawn leak occurred

Contemporary reporting described the Polaris Dawn issue as a helium leak in ground equipment at Kennedy Space Center. It did not report a leak aboard Dragon, the spacecraft carrying the mission crew. The available account does not identify the specific ground component or detail the inspection, repair, and verification work, so more precise claims about the equipment or the response are not established. Futurism’s report provides the ground-equipment characterization.

How it differed from Starliner’s helium leaks

The comparison is limited: both incidents involved helium, but they concerned different equipment and mission phases. The Polaris Dawn leak was reported on the ground during pre-launch preparations. Starliner’s leaks were in the spacecraft’s propulsion system and were part of a separate crew flight test. Starliner also experienced reaction-control-thruster problems; NASA ultimately decided the capsule would return without its crew. NASA’s August 24, 2024, decision describes the return plan and the leak and thruster context, while NASA’s May 17, 2024, launch update covers the earlier Starliner leak context.

What happened to Polaris Dawn

The ground-side leak did not prevent the mission from flying. Polaris Dawn launched aboard a Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center on September 10, 2024, and returned on September 15. The crew also completed the first commercial spacewalk on September 12. The Polaris Program updates document the launch, return, and spacewalk milestones.

What the headline comparison does—and does not—mean

Calling the Polaris Dawn incident “Starliner-like” points to helium, not to an equivalent technical failure. One report places the leak in ground equipment before launch; NASA’s Starliner accounts place leaks in the spacecraft propulsion system and describe separate thruster issues. The available reporting does not establish the Polaris Dawn leak’s rate, duration, risk level, or precise cause, so those details should not be inferred from the Starliner comparison.
