The U.S. Space Force retired the last two Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites in September 2026, ending a constellation that had provided space-based infrared warning for more than five decades. The retirement ended DSP operations—not U.S. space-based missile warning. SBIRS remains in orbit, while the Space Force plans a broader, multilayered successor architecture.

What happened to the last DSP satellites?

In early September 2026, the final two DSP spacecraft took part in a U.S. Space Command exercise involving maneuvers across multiple orbits. Afterward, they were moved into supersynchronous, or graveyard, orbits. The Space Force announced the constellation’s retirement on October 1, 2026. The spacecraft were not reported as deorbited or destroyed. Air & Space Forces Association, October 1, 2026; U.S. Space Force Combat Forces Command, October 2026

This was the end of the constellation, not simply another individual satellite retirement. In March 2023, the Space Force marked one DSP satellite reaching the end of its lifespan; the October 2026 announcement covered the final two spacecraft. U.S. Space Force Combat Forces Command, March 3, 2023

What did DSP satellites watch for?

DSP satellites used infrared sensors to detect heat from missile and rocket booster plumes against Earth’s background. Their warning mission included detecting missile launches, space launches, and nuclear detonations, supporting early warning for the United States and its allies. The first DSP satellite launched in 1970. U.S. Space Force, “Defense Support Program Satellites”

“Watched for World War III” is a dramatic shorthand, not the program’s formal name or a claim that DSP could predict a war. The satellites were designed to detect infrared events that could indicate a launch or detonation and help provide warning for national decision-making. They did not prevent conflict or independently identify every threat.

Did the Space Force retire its missile-warning system?

No. DSP was one part of the United States’ space-based warning capability. The Space Force describes the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) as DSP’s follow-on capability. SBIRS includes geosynchronous-orbit (GEO) satellites, highly elliptical orbit (HEO) sensors hosted on other satellites, and ground systems. Its mission areas include missile early warning, missile defense, battlespace awareness, and technical intelligence. U.S. Space Force, “Space Based Infrared System”

As of October 2026, Air & Space Forces reported that SBIRS remained on orbit with six GEO satellites and four HEO sensors. Those figures describe the reported constellation at that time, not a guarantee of future availability. Air & Space Forces Association, October 1, 2026

What is planned to follow SBIRS?

The intended transition is to a more resilient architecture with additional orbital layers, rather than a single direct replacement for DSP. Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (Next-Gen OPIR) GEO satellites are intended to augment SBIRS. The broader plan also includes proliferated Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) capabilities. These are planned elements; the plans do not establish that every layer is already operating.

The Space Force’s 2026 notional force-structure document shows legacy assets continuing in the 2025–2030 planning period and calls for discontinuing legacy GEO/HEO programs in favor of the more resilient architecture during 2030–2035. Those are planning windows, not fixed launch or retirement dates. U.S. Space Force, “Missile Warning and Tracking (MWT) Enduring Service Requirements”

Delivery is not assured simply because a system appears in a plan. In a January 2026 review, revised February 2, the Government Accountability Office identified readiness, schedule, requirements-transparency, and cost-estimation risks for the Space Development Agency’s planned proliferated warning and tracking system. The GAO described a plan for 300–500 LEO satellites and nearly $35 billion through fiscal year 2029; these are planning figures, not a confirmed deployed count or a completed cost. U.S. Government Accountability Office, GAO-26-107085
