A soundbar is a long, shallow speaker placed in front of or below a TV, or mounted on the wall. A soundbase is a wider, deeper speaker cabinet made to sit beneath the TV, with the TV resting on top when its stand fits and the base can safely support it. The key difference is placement and fit—not a guaranteed difference in sound quality.
Soundbar vs. soundbase at a glance
| What to compare | Soundbar | Soundbase |
|---|---|---|
| Shape and placement | Long and shallow; can sit on a shelf or furniture in front of the TV, or be wall-mounted. ZVOX describes both placement options in its product-format guide. | Wider and deeper, with a low profile; designed to sit under the TV, which may rest on top. |
| TV stand fit | Does not normally support the TV, so the stand footprint is not a placement requirement for the speaker itself. | The TV’s feet or pedestal must fit entirely within the top surface, and the unit must support the TV’s weight. ZVOX says the pedestal should not overhang. |
| Bass configuration | Varies by model: some have built-in woofers, while others include or support a separate subwoofer. | Also model-specific. ZVOX says its soundbar and soundbase systems have built-in subwoofers; the name alone does not establish how a particular model handles bass. |
| Surround expansion | Some configurations include or support a separate subwoofer and rear speakers; compatibility depends on the exact model. | Check the exact product’s specifications for expansion options rather than assuming they are available. |
| Connections | Both types may offer connections such as HDMI ARC, digital/optical, or analog, but ports and supported formats vary. Match the speaker’s connections to the TV’s available outputs. | |
For a recent retailer comparison, MediaMarkt Netherlands’ June 23, 2026 guide also frames the distinction around the units’ shape and how they fit into a TV setup: Soundbar or soundbase: what’s the difference?
How the two designs work in a room
Soundbar: flexible placement
A soundbar’s narrow profile makes it easier to place in front of a TV without putting the TV on the speaker. Depending on its design, it can also go on a shelf or be mounted on a wall. That flexibility can help when the TV is wall-mounted, when furniture is shallow, or when you want to keep the TV on its existing stand.
Soundbars come in different system configurations. Samsung’s UK guide describes one-body bars, soundbars paired with a separate subwoofer, and configurations that add rear speakers. Those categories apply to the models described by Samsung, not necessarily every soundbar on the market. Check whether the specific model supports the subwoofer or rear-speaker kit you want: some do not allow those additions. Samsung’s soundbar buying guide outlines the configurations it offers.

Soundbase: TV and speaker share a footprint
A soundbase combines a low, wide speaker cabinet with the TV’s under-screen footprint. The TV sits directly on the unit if the TV stand is compatible. This can make for a simple, single-piece arrangement, but it also means the soundbase must be deep and wide enough for the stand and strong enough for the TV.
ZVOX Audio’s support article, modified August 26, 2025, says a TV pedestal must fit within the soundbase’s top footprint without overhanging. Treat that as a fit requirement, not a general assurance that any TV can sit on any soundbase. Check both manufacturers’ specifications before placing a TV on a speaker.

Which should you choose?
Choose a soundbar if placement flexibility matters
- Your TV is wall-mounted, or you do not want the TV to rest on the speaker.
- You need a slim speaker that can go in front of the screen or on a shelf.
- You may want a separate subwoofer or rear speakers, and the specific soundbar supports the additions you want.
Choose a soundbase if the TV can safely sit on it
- You have furniture with enough depth and width for a deeper speaker cabinet.
- The TV’s feet or pedestal fit fully on the soundbase, and its weight is within the unit’s stated support limit.
- You prefer one integrated unit beneath the TV rather than a separate speaker placed in front of it.
Neither format is a reliable shortcut for judging sound quality or bass performance. Compare the specifications and supported features of the exact models you are considering. A Teufel comparison discusses general form-factor considerations, but it carries an archive notice and should not be treated as a source for current model recommendations: Soundbase or soundbar?

Check fit and connections before buying
- Measure the installation space. For a soundbar, check the available space in front of the TV or beneath it. For a soundbase, measure the cabinet’s top surface and depth against the TV stand’s footprint. ZVOX publishes typical soundbase dimensions of 24–42 inches wide and 11.5–16.5 inches deep, but these are the manufacturer’s figures, not universal standards; use the current product dimensions instead. ZVOX’s soundbase guide provides those figures.
- Confirm safe support for a soundbase. Check the soundbase’s stated weight limit and make sure the TV feet or pedestal sit fully within its top surface. Do not rely on the word “soundbase” alone to establish that a unit can support your TV.
- Match the TV and speaker connections. Compare the exact port lists and supported audio formats for both devices. HDMI ARC, optical/digital, and analog connections are examples found across products, not guaranteed features on every TV or speaker. A Teufel overview discusses connection considerations, but consult the manuals for the models you plan to use.
- Verify add-on compatibility. If you want a separate subwoofer or rear speakers, confirm that the exact soundbar supports those components. Check what is included in the configuration as well as what can be added later.
