Soulslike combat tends to reward deliberate commitments: read an enemy, manage distance, then choose a safe moment to attack or defend. Character-action combat tends to put more emphasis on expressive offense, varied sequences, and keeping the fight moving. The distinction is about what a game rewards—not simply how fast or difficult it is—and neither label describes every game in the same way.

What the labels mean

“Soulslike” is a flexible genre label shaped by FromSoftware’s Souls games. It commonly suggests readable enemy patterns and a meaningful cost for mistimed attacks or defensive moves. It does not promise a particular stamina system, dodge timing, build structure, or set of defensive options. FromSoftware’s games themselves change across releases; Hidetaka Miyazaki has discussed that evolution in an interview with PlayStation.Blog.

“Character-action” is also a broad description, not a formal rulebook. Devil May Cry is a familiar example, and its developer has described combat as central to the series. A Soulstice developer interview offers another perspective on designing an action game. In general, the useful question is what the combat asks you to do: carefully answer an opponent’s moves, or express yourself through offense and varied attack sequences.

How the combat tends to differ

Aspect Soulslike tendency Character-action tendency
Commitment Attacks and defensive moves can leave the player vulnerable during recovery, making timing and spacing important. Players commonly have more room to vary and extend attack sequences.
Defense Reading an enemy and choosing when to dodge, block, parry, or retreat are central parts of combat. Defense still matters, but offensive expression and sustaining action often receive more emphasis.
Player expression Weapons, builds, tools, and tactical choices can shape how a player approaches a fight. Attack variety, improvisation, and stylish execution are often prominent.
Pace A fight may alternate between observation, a brief opening, and recovery. The player may be encouraged to maintain a flow of attacks across one or more targets.

These are tendencies, not a standardized taxonomy. A particular game may mix them, and the labels alone cannot tell you exactly how its combat works. Miyazaki’s comments on how FromSoftware mechanics evolve, along with producer Yasuhiro Kitao’s discussion of Sekiro’s mobility and tools, illustrate how much a game can depart from familiar patterns (PlayStation.Blog; PlayStation.Blog interview with Kitao; PlayStation.Blog interview on Sekiro).

Is Sekiro a Soulslike or a character-action game?

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a useful boundary case, rather than a clean stand-in for either label. It comes from the same studio and shares an appeal with difficult, readable action combat, but its creators have described its combat as a distinct system. In an August 21, 2018 interview, director Hidetaka Miyazaki said: “Sekiro is not a continuation of the Soulsborne series, so we have created a brand-new combat system specifically for this game.” (Game Informer.)

Kitao described Sekiro’s protagonist as more agile and mobile than characters in earlier FromSoftware titles, and pointed to prosthetic tools and Combat Arts as ways to change tactics against different enemies (PlayStation.Blog). In a separate interview, FromSoftware marketing manager Yasuhiro Kitao said the game’s battle system, setting, story, characters, and mechanics were unique to it. That is a statement about design intent, not proof that Sekiro has no family resemblance to Souls (Activision).

Producer Robert Conkey likewise said that while the Dark Souls games were probably best categorized as action RPGs, Sekiro felt like a different type of game (Xbox Wire, March 19, 2019). Taken together, these descriptions make Sekiro easier to understand as its own combat design: it shares broad qualities with challenging action games while emphasizing its own movement, defensive approach, and tools.

  • Action commitment: Do attacks and defensive moves leave you exposed, or can you more readily continue and vary a sequence?
  • Defense: Does success depend heavily on reading an opponent and selecting a response, or does the game give more weight to maintaining offensive flow?
  • Player expression: Does your approach mainly change through weapons, builds, and tactical choices, or through attack variety and improvisation?
  • Tools and options: Do equipment and abilities change how you answer specific enemies? Games within either broad category can offer very different toolsets.

This comparison is more useful than asking which genre is “faster.” A quick game can still make attacks feel risky and deliberate; a demanding game can also reward long, expressive sequences. The mechanics of the individual title matter more than the label.
