Its analyzed sample did not rely on a USB drive’s mere insertion to infect a computer: it was designed to run through portable applications on the infected drive, then save encrypted stolen data back onto that same device. The report is historical; the sources cited here do not establish whether USB Thief remains active or how prevalent it is today.
What was the USB Thief Trojan?
USB Thief was a Trojan ESET found on USB devices and described as a data-stealing tool. ESET’s March 23, 2016 analysis covered a specific sample, not a general pattern shared by all malware distributed by USB. The sample’s unusual design tied its execution to the removable device that carried it.
ESET reported that the malware comprised six files: four executables and two configuration files. Some components were encrypted with AES-128. The key was calculated from the USB device’s unique ID and disk properties, making it difficult to copy the files to another device and run them there. Filenames in the execution chain were derived from file content and creation time, complicating identification and analysis. ESET’s technical analysis notes that investigators did not have the malicious USB device or the dropper, and that copying the submitted files had changed their creation times; they had to reconstruct device properties and execution order from the files they received.
How did the USB infection path work?
The analyzed malware used portable applications stored on the infected USB drive. It could masquerade as a plugin or DLL and execute when the intended application was launched. ESET contrasted this route with autorun and shortcut-based techniques; the report does not say that simply inserting the USB drive necessarily infected a computer.

- The user launched a portable application. Execution depended on starting the targeted application from the infected device, rather than insertion alone.
- Staged loaders checked the environment. ESET said the first component checked whether it was running from a writable USB device. A later stage checked the expected parent process, and another halted if specified security-software processes were present.
- The payload collected and encrypted data. The analyzed payload gathered selected files and system information, encrypted the results, and wrote them to the same removable device.
These stages describe ESET’s sample. They should not be taken as a recipe or as a description of every USB-borne Trojan.
What information did the sample collect?
ESET listed image and document files, the Windows HKCU registry tree, file lists from available drives, and information gathered with WinAudit. The payload encrypted the stolen data using elliptic-curve cryptography and stored it on the USB device. The device-bound design could make it harder to move the malware to another machine or carry the collected information out of the intended environment.

Could a USB Trojan target an air-gapped computer?
Potentially. Because USB devices can be carried into systems isolated from the internet, ESET analyst Tomáš Gardoň said this approach could reach computers without internet access. He described the malware as appearing to be made for targeted attacks. ESET’s technical article also said the analyzed malware was not very widespread at the time, but gave no numerical prevalence figure. Neither statement establishes current use or prevalence.
ESET’s analysis cautioned that the technique could be adapted to a different purpose: “It would not be difficult to redesign the malware to change from a data-stealing payload to any other malicious payload.” That is a technical observation about potential redesign, not evidence that another payload was deployed.

How can organizations reduce USB-device risk?
Gardoň’s March 2016 recommendations focused on limiting unnecessary USB access and building safe handling practices. Practical safeguards can address different parts of the risk:
- Restrict physical access where appropriate. Disable USB ports where the organization’s operational and hardware needs permit. A physical USB port blocker or lockout device may help enforce that restriction, but ESET did not name, test, or endorse such products.
- Set and enforce removable-media rules. Where ports must remain usable, define who may use removable media and under what conditions, and make the rules clear to staff.
- Train staff and test readiness. Gardoň recommended cybersecurity training, including real-life testing where possible, to reinforce careful handling.
- Protect data with layered controls. ESET’s interview also mentioned perimeter protection, encryption, and backups. These measures serve different purposes and do not guarantee that a USB-borne threat will be blocked.
As Gardoň put it in ESET’s interview, “USB ports should be disabled wherever possible and, if that’s not possible, strict policies should be in place to enforce care in their use.” He also said, “It’s highly desirable for staff at all levels to undergo cybersecurity training – including real-life testing – if possible.” These are historical recommendations, not comparative effectiveness results or a guarantee that any single control will prevent infection.

What the 2016 report does—and does not—show
ESET’s reporting establishes how one analyzed USB Thief sample was designed and what its analyst recommended in March 2016. It does not provide a current infection rate, confirm whether the malware is still in use, or establish present-day detection coverage. Treat the case as a documented example of targeted USB risk, not a measure of today’s overall threat landscape.
