The Sony PULSE 3D Wireless Headset is a sensible fit for PS5 players who want simple wireless setup, console sound controls and support for 3D audio in compatible games. Its strengths are closely tied to PlayStation, though: Sony estimates up to 12 hours of wireless play, and reviewers note possible comfort, build and microphone drawbacks. It is best viewed as a focused PS5 headset, not a universal pick.

What the PULSE 3D does well

PlayStation says the headset is tuned for the 3D Audio made possible by PS5. That is Sony’s product description, not a guarantee that every game will produce a 3D effect: the instruction manual specifies that PS5 3D audio works when the game supports it. The headset also works for ordinary stereo audio.

Setup is straightforward through the included USB wireless adaptor. On PS5, the headset offers sound-setting EQ presets and slots for saved custom settings; Sony says the EQ feature arrived in a PS5 system update. Its physical controls include master volume, mute, mic monitoring and game/chat balance. The game/chat balance control works only with PS5 or PS4.

Comfort, build and microphone quality

Sony lists the headset’s approximate weight as 292 g. Weight alone cannot predict fit: head shape, clamping pressure, earcup feel and session length matter. RTINGS flags possible discomfort during long sessions, while TechRadar criticizes the plastic bridge. Treat both as reviewer observations rather than universal fit outcomes.

#1 Best Overall
PULSE Elite Wireless Headset - For PS5, PC & MAC
  • PULSE Elite wireless headset comes with PlayStation Link USB adapter, PULSE Elite charging hanger, Carrying case, Mounting plate, USB cable and Printed materials
  • PlayStation Link wireless connection for PlayStation 5 consoles, PlayStation Portal remote player and PC / Mac
  • Bluetooth 5.0 and 3.5mm audio jack for Mobile devices
  • USB Type-C port for charging

The compact design uses dual built-in microphones rather than a boom mic. Sony lists noise-cancelling microphones, a mute control and mic monitoring. TechRadar describes the microphone quality as fairly good, but RTINGS notes that voice capture can sound quiet when the headset is connected to a PC over the 3.5 mm cable. If clear voice chat is a priority across platforms, a headset with a boom mic may suit you better.

Wireless, wired and PC compatibility

The supplied USB adaptor supports PS5 and PS4, as well as compatible Windows and macOS computers. Sony’s manual also says the adaptor can work with a USB audio-capable device. Computer compatibility does not mean every console-specific control or feature carries over: game/chat balance is limited to PS5 and PS4.

The included four-conductor 3.5 mm cable provides a wired option for compatible devices. Sony specifically lists PS VR and mobile use, but says headset controls are unsupported on those devices and mobile 3D audio is not supported. If you need Bluetooth, the PULSE 3D is not the straightforward choice described by its supplied wireless connection; consider alternatives that explicitly include Bluetooth.

Battery life and charging

Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ estimates up to 12 hours of wireless play on a charge. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a measured result here, and actual runtime can vary with use. The instruction manual gives approximately 3.5 hours to fully charge from empty. For frequent long sessions, battery endurance is a meaningful compromise rather than a minor spec.

PULSE 3D versus PULSE Elite and Arctis 7P

There is no single winner for every player. RTINGS’ comparisons point to different strengths, and its comfort and performance assessments may not match every listener’s fit or preferences.

Headset What the comparison emphasizes Best reason to consider it
Sony PULSE 3D RTINGS notes consistent audio delivery; Sony’s headset is built around PS5 controls and 3D audio support in compatible games. You want PlayStation-focused setup and controls.
Sony PULSE Elite RTINGS describes Bluetooth, a retractable boom microphone, greater comfort and longer battery life than the PULSE 3D. You prioritize a boom mic, Bluetooth or longer battery life.
SteelSeries Arctis 7P RTINGS describes it as more comfortable, with a better boom mic and longer battery life; the reviewer says the PULSE delivers audio more consistently. You prioritize comfort, microphone performance or battery endurance.

These are reviewer comparisons, not universal outcomes. Before choosing, check fit and connection needs, and compare current local prices and availability; those can change by region and over time.

Who should buy the PULSE 3D?

  • Consider it if you mainly play on PS5 or PS4 and value a simple wireless connection, console-specific game/chat balance, and built-in access to PS5 sound settings.
  • Look elsewhere or compare carefully if you often play long sessions, need longer battery life, prefer a boom microphone, want Bluetooth, or depend on clear voice capture over a wired PC connection.
  • Check the fit in person if possible if comfort is a deciding factor; reviewer reports cannot predict how it will feel on your head.
