The trade-off is most relevant in bright rooms and HDR scenes designed to make highlights stand out. Gaming: strong features, with a format trade-off
The television has two HDMI 2.1 inputs and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. According to the review, it supports 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). For a PlayStation 5, it also offers Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode.

There is a specific compromise when choosing gaming output: the review says you can use 4K at 120Hz without Dolby Vision HDR, or Dolby Vision HDR without 4K at 120Hz. If your priority is high-refresh-rate console gaming, that choice is worth understanding before purchase rather than assuming the two modes work together.
Google TV and connections

Sound and setup
The built-in audio is rated at 20 watts across two channels. Lucas found it less satisfying than the picture and suggests a soundbar as an option for a more enjoyable listening experience. No particular soundbar was tested or recommended in the review.

Who should consider the KD-55X85L?
- A good fit: Viewers who want a detailed, natural-looking picture, effective local dimming and capable motion handling, along with modern console-gaming features.
- Think carefully: Buyers who watch in a bright room or want especially forceful HDR highlights may find its reported brightness limiting.
- Check your format priorities: Dolby Vision is supported, but HDR10+ is not; 4K/120Hz gaming and Dolby Vision HDR are presented as alternative modes.
- Budget for audio if needed: The reviewer preferred the picture to the built-in sound, making a separate audio system worth considering.
Verdict
In Stuff’s January 2024 review, Simon Lucas called the KD-55X85L “An across-the-board improvement on the (already pretty decent) model it replaces.” His assessment supports the idea of a well-rounded, polished mid-range TV, especially for viewers who value subtle picture quality and gaming flexibility.
