Its significance was the combination of Prophesee’s pixels, which report changes in brightness as they happen, with Sony’s stacked CMOS sensor technology—not a demonstration of general-purpose AI running inside the sensor. The “Pandora’s box” phrase was an analyst’s characterization of the partnership’s potential, not a measured technical result.
What Sony and Prophesee announced in 2020
At ISSCC in San Francisco, Prophesee presented a stacked event-based vision sensor jointly developed with Sony. The collaboration paired Prophesee’s event-driven pixel design with Sony’s stacked CMOS image-sensor manufacturing technology. Copper-to-copper electrical connections join the pixel chip and logic chip in the reported design. EE Times reported the presentation on February 21, 2020.
Prophesee CEO Luca Verre described Sony as a natural partner for the design: “Given the nature of our technology that uses a lot of transistors, electronics and photodiodes, working with Sony was always our first choice,” he told EE Times. The article also reported that Pierre Cambou, then a principal analyst at Yole Développement, characterized the partnership as equivalent to “opening Pandora’s box.” That wording captures the perceived opportunity; it is not a technical finding or proof of later adoption.
What event-based vision is, and how it differs from ordinary video
A conventional camera typically captures a sequence of complete frames at set intervals. An event-based sensor instead detects changes in pixel brightness and reports those changes asynchronously as events. The 2020 article described the pixels as using asynchronous delta modulation: rather than repeatedly transmitting a full image, the sensor signals when luminance changes.

- Crystal clear 1080P HD video record Capture clear and detailed images with HD resolution day or night. Built-in infrared night vision automatically activates in the dark to provide clear black and white imaging for all-weather surveillance.
- Dual video record with motion detection and loop record The built-in motion sensing module can quickly trigger the video record function when dynamic events (e.g. human activity or object movement) occur in the monitoring area (detection only within the direct field of view of the lens with a diameter of 3 meters and a viewing angle of 110°). It will automatically save key frames, so that the monitoring is more targeted, and ineffective recording caused by the waste of storage space. The device also has a loop record function, when the micro SD card is full, the previous video file will be automatically overwritten to ensure that the video record is ongoing.
- Easy to use (no WiFi required)/Charging while record This camera is very easy to operate, no Wi-Fi required, just an SD card (to be purchased) and press the appropriate button to start or stop shooting. Supports memory cards from 16GB to 512GB. Supports record during charging.(Important: SD card not included)
- Compact in size/ Gravity sensing this compact camera measures only 1.9x1.5x0.7 inches and is easy to carry. It can be easily connected to a computer or laptop via a C-type cable and recorded videos can be played without downloading software. You can take it with you and capture every important moment in your life. The integrated gravity sensor automatically detects 180° device rotation and adjusts video orientation, keeping footage upright at all times. It enhances ease of use and practicality of recorded content.
- Suitable for various security scenarios. It works reliably to prevent home burglary, care for elderly people living alone, monitor important office documents and protect store goods, delivering trustworthy local monitoring solutions for all situations. This can change the timing and volume of visual data presented to a downstream system. It does not mean every event camera uses the same architecture, nor does it by itself establish what processing a computer or application performs after receiving events.
What “AI sensing” means here—and what it does not
In the 2020 framing, “AI sensing” refers to changing the way visual information is captured so that processing can potentially happen closer to where the data originates. The sensor’s defining behavior is detecting brightness changes at the sensing plane. The ISSCC presentation, as described by EE Times, did not demonstrate that the sensor performed general-purpose AI inference on-chip.
The distinction matters: event-based output can be useful input for a vision system, but the sensor and an AI system are not interchangeable. Claims about an application’s ability to recognize objects or make decisions require evidence about the complete system, not just the sensor architecture.

Reported specifications: keep the dates and attribution attached
EE Times reported the following specifications for the sensor presented in 2020, attributing the performance claims to Prophesee. These are historical company claims reported at the time, not independent comparative test results.
| Reported figure | What the source says |
|---|---|
| 4.86 μm pixel size | Prophesee figure reported by EE Times in 2020. |
| 1280 × 720 resolution | Prophesee figure reported by EE Times in 2020. |
| 40 nm logic process | Prophesee figure reported by EE Times in 2020. |
| 124 dB or more HDR | Prophesee performance claim reported by EE Times in 2020; not an independent comparison. |
| Low-light event detection at 40 mlx | Prophesee figure reported by EE Times in 2020. |
Current Prophesee documentation describes the Sony IMX636 HD as a 1280 × 720 event-based sensor with HDR beyond 120 dB. That is the vendor’s current product description, and it should not be silently substituted for the separate historical “124 dB or more” claim. See Prophesee’s EVK4 documentation.
