The best Sonos alternative depends less on a brand name than on how your household listens. First check whether your phones and music services work with the system, then confirm how it groups speakers across rooms. If you already own passive speakers or an amplifier, a streamer or multi-room amp may be a better fit than replacing everything with wireless speakers.
Start with compatibility, not sound claims
“Multi-room” does not guarantee that speakers from different brands will play together. AirPlay 2 and Google Cast can group compatible products across manufacturers, while proprietary systems may limit grouping to their own products or app. Confirm the exact models and the steps needed to group them before buying; a feature on one model does not establish support across a whole product family. Crutchfield’s multi-room audio guide explains the main approaches.
Streaming support also has distinct layers. A service might be built into a speaker’s app, offer direct control through Spotify Connect or another Connect feature, or play through AirPlay or Google Cast from a phone. Those routes are not interchangeable: support for one does not prove support for the others, or that a service can be grouped across rooms.
- Check the household’s devices: iPhones and other Apple devices may make AirPlay 2 a natural control route; Android households may prefer Google Cast where the exact speakers support it.
- Check each music service’s route: look for native support, the service’s Connect feature, and AirPlay or Cast compatibility separately.
- Check grouping behavior: confirm whether rooms can be grouped from the speaker maker’s app, the music app, AirPlay, or Google Cast—and whether all the speakers you plan to use are supported.
Match the system to the equipment you already own
If you are building a system from scratch, powered wireless speakers are the simplest room-by-room option. If you already have passive speakers or an amplifier you like, a streamer or multi-room amplifier can preserve that gear. The 2026 What Hi-Fi? multi-room roundup includes WiiM Pro Plus and Amp Pro components as well as Sound and Sound Lite wireless speakers—different products for different jobs.

- 【For Multi-room Indoor Audio】Designed for homes, classrooms, offices, and meeting rooms needing the same audio across multiple speakers. Ideal for background music, TV sound, and spoken content with consistent room-to-room coverage.
- 【Ultra Low Latency Under 30ms】Delivers synchronized playback with under-30 ms latency, keeping audio aligned across all speakers. Speech and video sound natural with no noticeable delay or echo during shared listening.
- 【Simple Setup, No App Required】Connect the transmitter to your TV, phone, or laptop via optical, AUX, or Bluetooth. Power on and speakers auto-connect with no app installation or complex setup steps.
- 【Not For Large Outdoor Venues】Not designed for large outdoor spaces or very loud environments due to limited maximum volume. Best suited for indoor use where clear, synchronized audio coverage is required.
- 【Limited Microphone Input Type】Not compatible with USB mics, direct XLR mics, or 3.5mm TRRS headset mics. Requires line-level output (3.5mm TRS or RCA) from a powered mic, wireless receiver, or mixer.
Before choosing a component, identify the connections on your current setup. Line-in, AUX, optical, or RCA inputs and outputs vary by device. A streamer may send audio to an existing amplifier; an amplifier product may drive passive speakers directly. Verify the exact model’s connections and requirements rather than assuming that every product in a system can accept or distribute the same inputs.

Check inputs, local music, and TV needs
Inputs and Bluetooth
Line-in or AUX can connect a turntable, CD player, television, or other source, depending on the source’s output and the speaker’s input. Bluetooth behavior is also system-dependent: some products play a Bluetooth source only on the receiving speaker, while others can redistribute it to grouped rooms. Confirm the specific product’s behavior if either feature is central to your setup. Crutchfield’s guide covers these differences.
Personal music libraries
DLNA/UPnP support can let compatible systems play files stored on a network computer, NAS, or media server. Check the formats supported and how the system browses the library; local playback can be useful, but setup and control may differ from streaming-service apps. The same guide discusses local-library and network playback.

Television and home cinema
Do not assume that a music-focused multi-room system offers a Sonos-like TV or home-cinema path. If you want a soundbar, surround speakers, or TV audio grouped with music rooms, check which products integrate and how the manufacturer supports that configuration. Audio Pro’s cited alternatives guide notes a relative lack of home-cinema components, while the Bluesound roundup includes Pulse Cinema soundbars; neither detail establishes that every product in those systems works with every TV setup.
Factor app and update support into the decision
A speaker can keep producing sound even after its cloud service or app loses features. Before committing to a system, check how it behaves if the manufacturer changes or ends online services, and whether firmware and security updates continue. This is especially important for used or discontinued products.

What Bose SoundTouch owners can still do
Bose says SoundTouch cloud functionality has ended. Its app update of May 6, 2026 retains limited control for systems on the same Wi-Fi network, including setup, configuration, remote control, and grouping. Browsing services and starting music inside the SoundTouch app no longer work. Bose directs users to music-service apps and lists AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, and AUX as playback routes; existing presets may continue, but Bose does not guarantee them and users can no longer change them. Bose SoundTouch end-of-life support
Bose states: “No. SoundTouch products will no longer receive security updates. Firmware updates are no longer available now that the cloud is offline.” For Spotify, Bose instructs users to select the system through Spotify Connect. Its instructions describe TuneIn and Pandora playback from those services’ apps over AirPlay or Bluetooth; an AUX-connected wireless receiver may be a workaround for some Android users without Bluetooth. AirPlay multi-room use requires AirPlay 2, and the available route depends on the specific speaker and device.

These changes do not mean every SoundTouch speaker has stopped working, but they do change its controls and maintenance status. If you keep one in service, choose a playback route that the exact model supports and account for the absence of future security and firmware updates.
