The right choice depends on whether your users need full network tunnels, application-level access, or browser-based access; where you need to run the gateway; and how your organization handles identity, endpoint controls, resilience, lifecycle, and support. The available vendor documentation describes different product families and access approaches, but does not establish equivalent models, comparative capacity, or total cost.
What the comparison covers
SonicWall describes Secure Mobile Access (SMA) as a gateway family for reaching corporate resources in on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. Its documentation covers physical appliances, virtual appliances for private clouds, public-cloud instances, clients, and Central Management Server (CMS). SMA 1000 is one series within that family; SonicWall’s product page names the SMA 6210 and SMA 7210 in its FIPS material, but does not provide a current model-by-model price or performance comparison. SonicWall SMA product information
Fortinet FortiGate and Cisco Secure Firewall are relevant alternatives, but their documentation describes different remote-access approaches and does not identify a directly equivalent appliance for every SMA 1000 deployment. Treat this as a procurement comparison between candidate architectures, not a like-for-like hardware ranking.
Compare the access experience before comparing appliances
“Remote access VPN” can mean different workflows. A full network tunnel gives a remote device broader network connectivity; application-level access scopes connectivity to selected resources; browser-based or clientless access avoids installing a full tunnel client but may support fewer applications or protocols. Map the applications and user tasks you actually need before matching vendor feature names.

|---|---|---|
| SonicWall SMA 1000 | SonicWall describes application-level VPN and browser-based clientless access, and identifies Connect Tunnel and Mobile Connect as clients used with SMA 1000. The wider SMA family includes physical, private-cloud virtual, and public-cloud deployments. SonicWall SMA product information | Confirm that the specific applications, protocols, client platforms, access policies, and deployment form you require are supported by the model and software configuration being quoted. |
| Fortinet FortiGate | Fortinet documents IPsec and SSL VPN remote access. In FortiOS 7.6.3, SSL VPN tunnel mode is replaced with IPsec VPN, and SSL VPN web mode is renamed Agentless VPN. Fortinet describes tunnel mode as client-based with broader application support and Agentless mode as browser-based with more limited application support. Fortinet remote-access guidance · FortiOS 7.6.3 Agentless VPN changes | Pin down the target FortiOS release and model. If an existing deployment uses SSL VPN tunnel mode, plan and test a migration to IPsec VPN before adopting 7.6.3 or later. |
| Cisco Secure Firewall | Cisco documents Secure Client remote access using full-tunnel SSL and IPsec-IKEv2 connections to a security gateway. Cisco Secure Firewall remote-access VPN documentation | Select the relevant gateway model and deployment configuration, then validate client compatibility, capacity for your workload, licensing, and operational fit. The cited documentation does not establish an SMA 1000-equivalent model. |
Evaluate deployment, controls, and operations
Deployment location and management
SonicWall lists hardened physical SMA appliances, private-cloud virtual appliances on ESXi or Hyper-V, and public-cloud instances in AWS or Microsoft Azure. It also describes CMS for centralized management and deployments. These are documented SMA options, not proof that their cost, performance, or operating burden matches a FortiGate or Cisco architecture. SonicWall SMA product information
For each candidate, decide whether the gateway must run on-premises, in a private cloud, or in a public cloud, and who will operate it. Confirm how policies, reporting, upgrades, and multi-site administration work in the exact proposed configuration; the cited sources do not provide a comparative management-platform assessment.

Identity and endpoint trust
SonicWall describes authentication integration, context-aware device authorization, granular access controls, and managed-device health checks for SMA. Fortinet’s remote-access guidance discusses remote authentication servers, certificates, MFA, and TLS configuration. These descriptions are not a complete integration matrix, so verify support for your identity provider, MFA method, certificates, endpoint posture rules, and unmanaged-device requirements in the relevant release and licensing tier. Scale, high availability, and recovery
Size the solution against your expected concurrent users, sites, application mix, traffic patterns, and failover requirements. The cited vendor materials do not establish a common independent benchmark or comparable cross-vendor capacity figure. Do not compare maximum-user or throughput claims unless the model, software release, test conditions, and workload are genuinely comparable.

In a proof of concept, exercise normal peak use as well as gateway failure, site failure, client reconnection, and rollback. Record observed performance and recovery against your own acceptance criteria rather than treating a vendor family description as a guarantee.
Lifecycle, migration, and support
Confirm the lifecycle status and support dates for the exact model, software release, and deployment you are considering. SonicWall’s statement about end of sale/end of support applies to SMA 100, not the SMA 1000 series; do not transfer that status between product families. - Inventory access needs. List required applications, protocols, user groups, and whether each needs a full tunnel, app-scoped access, or browser-only access. Include legacy applications and unmanaged devices.
- Set deployment constraints. Specify allowed hosting locations, existing gateway dependencies, site topology, and whether centralized administration is required.
- Define controls. Document identity provider, MFA, certificates, endpoint posture, device trust, and policy requirements, then validate each against current vendor documentation and licensing.
- Set scale and resilience criteria. State concurrent-user expectations, growth, availability targets, failover behavior, and measurable acceptance tests. Use a representative proof of concept for performance.
- Check lifecycle and migration impact. Verify precise model and release support dates, firmware policy, client changes, upgrade path, change window, and rollback plan.
- Compare full-term cost. Request quotes that include hardware or cloud deployment, software, user entitlements, high availability, support coverage, renewals, and migration or operational effort. No current cross-vendor quote or total-cost comparison is established by the cited material.
When to consider a cloud-delivered alternative
SonicWall positions Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) as a cloud-delivered access solution rather than a like-for-like appliance. Its licensing documentation distinguishes Basic, which provides VPN-style network access, from Advanced, which provides ZTNA access to individually named resources. SonicWall says the documentation was last validated October 1, 2026. Check eligibility, regional availability, migration terms, and current pricing with SonicWall or an authorized partner before treating CSE as an option for a specific deployment. SonicWall’s official page names SMA 6210 and SMA 7210 in its SMA Series v12.1 FIPS certification material. That identifies models and certification material; it does not mean every cryptographic module, configuration, or deployment is certified for every regulated use. For a compliance requirement, verify the relevant certificate, module boundary, and configuration. SonicWall SMA product information
The cited product and technical documents do not establish a universal winner, independent performance ranking, common capacity figure, current price, or cross-vendor total cost. A specific recommendation therefore needs a validated model and software configuration, current quotes, lifecycle confirmation, and a representative proof of concept for your applications and operating requirements.
