No. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a Nintendo DS game, and its cartridge is not compatible with Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says Switch systems do not support games designed for older consoles and accept only game cards made for Switch software. The answer is the same whether you own the original DS cartridge or subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online: neither gives you a way to play this DS RPG on Switch. This reflects the official information reviewed on October 30, 2026; it does not rule out a future release.
Why can’t Sonic Chronicles run on Nintendo Switch?
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood was made for Nintendo DS, not for Switch. The ESRB listing identifies the game as a Nintendo DS title. Nintendo’s guidance on older games says the Switch is not backward compatible with digital or physical games designed for older consoles. Its game-card support page is equally direct: “Nintendo Switch consoles are only compatible with game cards made for Nintendo Switch software.”
That means the problem is not simply that Switch lacks a particular menu option. A DS cartridge is a different format from a Switch game card, and the Switch does not provide compatibility for the DS game. Inserting the cartridge will not make it playable, and a Switch subscription does not convert it into a Switch game. The cartridge’s original platform matters: owning the physical copy does not change which system it was made to run on.

This is a platform-compatibility answer, not a judgment about the game’s quality. If your goal is specifically to play Sonic Chronicles, you need compatible DS-family hardware. If your goal is to play a Sonic game on Switch, choose a title released for Switch—but treat it as a different game, not as a port or substitute copy of this RPG.

Is Sonic Chronicles included with Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Nintendo Switch Online offers selected libraries of older games, but Nintendo’s listed Classics platforms do not include Nintendo DS. The Game Boy and Game Boy Advance libraries are separate systems’ catalogs; their presence does not mean that DS games are included. A subscription does not make a DS cartridge readable on Switch, either.
It is also easy to confuse the service’s older Sonic offerings with this title. A Sonic game from the SEGA Genesis catalog is not Sonic Chronicles: the games have different names, original platforms, and gameplay. Check the exact title and platform in Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online game-library information rather than assuming that a Sonic listing covers every Sonic release. A library containing one game from a franchise does not mean it includes all games in that franchise.
Catalogs can change, so this is a statement about the platforms and titles listed in the official information reviewed on October 30, 2026—not a promise that Nintendo will never add DS games. As of that date, however, there was no Nintendo DS library in the listed Switch Online Classics platforms that would provide access to Sonic Chronicles.
How can you play the original game?
Use the original Nintendo DS cartridge with a compatible Nintendo DS-family system. Nintendo also says DS games work on Nintendo 3DS-family systems, with an exception for games that require the older DS AGB accessory slot. The available information does not identify Sonic Chronicles as needing that accessory, but check the compatibility of the specific hardware and game rather than assuming every older system supports every DS title.

- Confirm the exact game. Look for Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for Nintendo DS. A listing for another Sonic game, a soundtrack, or a different platform does not provide this game.
- Check the hardware. You need a compatible DS-family system, or a compatible 3DS-family system that supports the DS game. A Switch or Switch game card is not an alternative.
- Inspect a used-game listing carefully. Confirm that the offer is for the DS cartridge itself, and review the seller’s description of cartridge condition, completeness, return terms, and authenticity. A retailer listing can establish that the game exists as a DS cartridge; it cannot establish the stock, price, condition, or authenticity of an individual resale offer.
- Keep the control scheme in mind. The ESRB listing describes touchscreen inputs for the title. That is another reason not to assume a Switch version or equivalent Switch control scheme exists.
Buying the cartridge alone is not enough if you do not have compatible hardware. Conversely, owning a suitable DS- or 3DS-family system does not make the cartridge work on Switch; the two are separate play options. If you are considering a second-hand purchase, confirm both parts of the setup—the game and a compatible system—before paying.
If you already own a compatible handheld, the cartridge is the central item to look for. If you do not, compare the cost and condition of obtaining the game with the cost and condition of obtaining compatible hardware; no verified current price is established here, so check actual offers before deciding. A listing that says “Sonic” or “Nintendo” is not enough by itself: verify that it identifies the DS version and the physical cartridge you intend to use. If the seller’s listing leaves condition, what is included, or return terms unclear, ask before purchasing rather than assuming those details.
What Sonic games can you play on Switch instead?
Nintendo’s official US Switch catalog lists other Sonic releases, including Sonic Origins Plus, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Frontiers. These are Switch alternatives for someone looking for a Sonic game on that console, but none is Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood or a way to access its DS cartridge.

Choose according to what you want to play: if the priority is this particular RPG, look for the original DS game and compatible DS-family hardware. If the priority is playing Sonic on the Switch you already own, consider one of the Switch-listed titles and read its own listing. That choice gets you a different Sonic release, not the DS game by another route. Check the platform on each product page rather than inferring compatibility from the character or franchise name.
Which option fits your goal?
| Your goal | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play Sonic Chronicles itself | Find the original Nintendo DS cartridge and use compatible DS-family hardware. | This is the supported route to the original DS game; it does not involve Switch. |
| Use a 3DS-family system you already own | Check that the model supports DS games, then use the original cartridge. | Nintendo says DS games work on 3DS-family systems, subject to the AGB-slot exception. |
| Play a Sonic game on Switch | Choose a Switch-listed Sonic title and verify its own store page. | You will be playing a different release, not Sonic Chronicles. |
| Play it through Switch Online | Do not subscribe on the assumption that the DS game is included. | The listed Classics platforms reviewed do not include Nintendo DS. |
The useful dividing line is whether you want this exact game or simply another Sonic game. The original cartridge requires compatible DS-family hardware; a Switch release requires the platform shown on its own store page. Neither a subscription nor a different Switch Sonic title bridges those two options.
What should you check before buying a used copy?
First make sure the listing names the Nintendo DS version and offers the actual game cartridge. Then inspect the seller’s condition notes and return policy, and ask about anything important that the listing leaves unclear. These checks help you assess an individual offer; they do not guarantee authenticity or condition, and the cited retailer listing does not establish a current market price or inventory.

For a physical purchase, treat the cartridge and the handheld as separate requirements. Confirm that the hardware is a DS-family system or a suitable 3DS-family system, and verify compatibility for the exact model if you are unsure. Do not infer current stock or a fair price from the fact that a retailer has a product page: resale availability and an individual offer’s condition need to be checked directly. If a product description does not clearly say Nintendo DS cartridge, seek clarification before buying.
What is the short answer?
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a DS game, not a Switch game. Use its original cartridge with compatible DS-family hardware to play the original; choose a separate Switch Sonic release if you want to play on Switch. Nintendo Switch Online’s listed Classics libraries do not include DS games as of the information reviewed on October 30, 2026.

Is Sonic Chronicles on Nintendo Switch Online?
No, not according to the Classics platforms listed in the official information reviewed on October 30, 2026. Those listed platforms do not include Nintendo DS. The presence of Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, or SEGA Genesis games does not make this DS RPG part of the service.
Can I move a Sonic Chronicles save from DS to Switch?
The sources cited here establish that the DS game itself is not compatible with Switch; they do not document a save-transfer feature for this title. Do not assume a Switch Sonic game can read or continue a save from the DS cartridge.
Can I play it on a Nintendo 3DS?
Nintendo says DS games work on Nintendo 3DS-family systems, except for games requiring the older DS AGB accessory slot. The available information does not identify Sonic Chronicles as requiring that slot. Check the compatibility of your particular system and game if you need confirmation.
Does a 3DS need an internet connection to play a DS cartridge?
The cited compatibility guidance describes DS games working on 3DS-family systems as a hardware compatibility matter, not as a Switch Online feature. The sources reviewed do not specify connection requirements for every setup, so check the system and game documentation if you need an answer for a particular configuration.
Will a Switch Sonic game give me the same experience?
No Switch alternative listed here is identified as Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Nintendo’s catalog lists titles such as Sonic Origins Plus, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Frontiers, but those are separate releases. Check each store page for its own platform and current availability.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You cannot play the Nintendo DS cartridge of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch Online Classics platforms reviewed on October 30, 2026 do not include DS. To play this RPG, use the original cartridge with compatible DS-family hardware, including a suitable 3DS-family system. For Switch, choose a separate Sonic title and verify its current platform listing.
