Sombra is no longer a Damage hero or a Flanker; as of Reign of Talon Season 5, which began October 6, 2026, she is a Support hero focused on healing allies and weakening enemies. The better choice depends on the role you want, not on a proven universal power ranking.
Are Sombra and Tracer both flankers?
No. The title’s premise is out of date for the current season: Blizzard moved Sombra from Damage to Support in Season 5. Tracer remains a Flanker. Blizzard describes Flankers as agile heroes who specialize in sneaky attacks and distraction, and lists Tracer in that sub-role. Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement and its sub-role explainer establish the current distinction.
That means this is not a like-for-like flanker comparison. It is a choice between a hero Blizzard classifies as a Flanker and one it now classifies as a Support.
Choose Tracer if you want the Flanker role
Tracer is the straightforward choice if your goal is to play a Flanker. Her current official hero page labels her a Flanker, while Blizzard’s role explainer describes the sub-role’s focus on agile, sneaky attacks and distraction. Those descriptions support choosing her for that style, rather than making a claim about a specific matchup or competitive advantage. Tracer’s official hero page

Choose Sombra if you want to support your team
Season 5 changes Sombra’s purpose: Blizzard now calls her a “Support Tactician.” Her current kit descriptions emphasize helping allies and weakening opponents, rather than identifying her as a flanker.
- Hotfix: Sombra can target an ally for healing after a brief cast. Blizzard says she can use it while Invisible without immediately breaking stealth.
- Cyberspace: Sombra heals allies in an area and weakens enemies by reducing their damage and healing effectiveness.
These abilities make Sombra the fit for players who want to contribute through ally healing, battlefield information, and enemy weakening. Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement describes the role change and these support abilities.

Quick comparison

| Sombra | Support | Heal allies and weaken enemies as part of your team contribution |
Does one hero perform better?
These role descriptions do not establish that one hero is universally stronger. Blizzard’s cited material does not provide a current, directly comparable Sombra-versus-Tracer win rate, pick rate, matchup statistic, or head-to-head competitive ranking. Balance changes and what the team needs can affect the practical choice, so the evidence supports a role-based recommendation—not a blanket power ranking.
