NASA/JPL’s Apps directory describes a closely matching browser experience, Eyes on the Solar System, as a 3D visualization using real NASA mission data that lets users control space and time. That description does not establish that a separate product called SOLAR is the same project.
What can you explore in the browser?
JPL describes Eyes on the Solar System as a web-based 3D visualization populated with real NASA mission data. Its directory listing invites users to ride along with an asteroid or Voyager and says they can control space and time. It is a strong official example of the kind of experience suggested by this title, but the available official information does not identify a separate SOLAR product or confirm its features, device support, or data pipeline.
JPL first announced Eyes on the Solar System on September 2, 2011. At launch, the tool combined video-game technology with NASA data and showed models of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. The announcement described a 1950–2050 data range and a then-required free browser plug-in; those are historical launch details, not established current requirements or current limits. See the 2011 JPL announcement for that context.
What does “real JPL orbits” mean?
JPL’s Horizons system provides solar-system data and customizable ephemerides: calculations of where objects are and how they move over a selected span of time. Depending on the request, Horizons can return vectors or osculating orbital elements. The Horizons service page documents browser access and links to additional access routes; its API documentation describes configurable requests, including a Mars observer-ephemeris example.

For scale, the Horizons manual, version 4.98e dated August 25, 2026, lists holdings of more than 1,560,000 asteroids, 4,075 comets, 461 natural satellites, all planets, the Sun, and 253 spacecraft. These are counts stated in the manual, not an independent validation of any particular visualization’s coverage. Consult the Horizons System Manual for its data and technical details.
Does a moving spacecraft show its live position?
No—not necessarily. JPL says spacecraft trajectories in Horizons are not relayed in real time like GPS positions; trajectory data may be updated weekly or monthly. A spacecraft marker moving in a visualization can therefore represent a computed trajectory at the selected time rather than a live telemetry feed. The exact freshness and source of the data shown by a particular SOLAR-branded tool are not established here.

Time coverage also depends on the object. JPL advises users to check the relevant Horizons time span rather than assume every object can be queried over the same dates. Small-body orbit solutions can change when new measurements become available, and some solutions may not be adequate for high-precision work across a chosen interval. For research or planning, check the relevant object’s data and uncertainties rather than treating a 3D display as authoritative on its own.
Is Horizons or the visualization always available?
Horizons access is described as best-effort, not as a guaranteed continuous service. JPL’s service page mentions historically typical uptime above 99.9%, while advising users with critical applications to allow for outages. That historical description is not a current uptime guarantee. The API documentation is labeled version 1.3 (June 2025) and recommends checking the response’s version field for format changes.

Do you need a physical product to use it?
No physical item is established as necessary or specifically recommended for the browser experience described by JPL. The official sources support exploring a web visualization and querying orbital data; they do not establish that a model kit, book, telescope, binoculars, or VR headset is required, compatible, or useful for a separate product named SOLAR.
