FreeOffice 2018 could open and save Microsoft Word DOCX, Excel XLSX, and PowerPoint PPTX files, and it let users choose either a ribbon interface or classic menus and toolbars. SoftMaker’s “full Office 2016 compatibility” was a file-format interoperability claim—not evidence that every Office feature or document would behave identically.
What FreeOffice 2018 included
SoftMaker announced FreeOffice 2018 on May 16, 2018, as a no-cost office suite for Windows and Linux. It comprised three desktop applications: TextMaker 2018 for word processing, PlanMaker 2018 for spreadsheets, and Presentations 2018 for slide decks. SoftMaker described it as the free version of its commercial SoftMaker Office suite. SoftMaker’s announcement gives the release date and original platform scope.
What “Office 2016 compatibility” meant
The practical change was native opening and saving of DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. SoftMaker said users could exchange these files with Microsoft Office users without converting them first. The release announcement describes the file exchange capability.
That supports routine file sharing, but it does not establish that every feature, macro, add-in, layout, or workflow matches Microsoft Office 2016. SoftMaker specifically connected PlanMaker’s pivot tables and conditional formatting with Excel 2016 compatibility through XLSX support. Its feature announcement describes those capabilities, but provides no controlled test corpus or quantified fidelity rate. For complex files, preserve the original and inspect the result in the application that will be used to edit or present it.

Ribbon or classic menus: how the interface worked
FreeOffice 2018 added a choice between modern ribbon controls and the familiar classic menus and toolbars. In ribbon mode, a hamburger menu also exposed classic menu entries, giving users a way to reach commands through the older menu structure. Contemporary coverage said users could switch modes through Tools > Options > Appearance; touch mode could enlarge icons and menu entries. The Register’s May 2018 coverage reports those interface details.
What the three applications could do
TextMaker 2018
TextMaker included desktop-publishing tools, support for images and graphics, headers and footers, tables, and export to PDF and EPUB. SoftMaker’s feature announcement lists these capabilities.

PlanMaker 2018
PlanMaker offered calculations, tables, charts, pivot tables, and conditional formatting, alongside XLSX open-and-save support. The feature description associates pivot tables and conditional formatting with compatibility with Microsoft Excel 2016, but does not claim that every Excel feature or workbook behavior is identical. SoftMaker’s announcement describes the spreadsheet features.
Presentations 2018
Presentations included a revised master-slide concept, multiple layouts and placeholders, animations, slide transitions based on OpenGL, and presenter-oriented controls. These listed features describe the 2018 application; they do not establish full PowerPoint feature parity. SoftMaker’s feature announcement outlines them.

FreeOffice 2018 versus paid SoftMaker Office
FreeOffice 2018 was positioned as the no-cost counterpart to commercial SoftMaker Office, but the available release descriptions do not provide a complete, version-by-version feature matrix. SoftMaker’s 2017 announcement about SoftMaker Office 2018 discussed additional commercial-suite features such as tabs, cell-style catalogs, worksheet tables, AutoFilter improvements, presenter view, and 32-bit and 64-bit Windows packaging. Those details should not automatically be treated as features of every FreeOffice 2018 build. The commercial-suite announcement describes its own launch context.
That same November 8, 2017 announcement listed launch prices of US$69.95 for Standard and US$99.95 for Professional, with a free 30-day trial. These are historical launch prices, not current pricing.

SoftMaker’s current FreeOffice download page offers current downloads rather than establishing that a FreeOffice 2018 installer remains available. It lists Windows, macOS, and Linux options and displays Windows 7/8/10/11 and Windows Server 2008 R2 or later, macOS 10.14 or later, and Linux downloads. The page shows revision 1234 dated April 28, 2026; check it for up-to-date requirements and downloads, since these can change. SoftMaker’s FreeOffice download page is the current reference.
SoftMaker separately lists SoftMaker Office 2018 for Windows, Mac, and Linux in its archive at revision 982, with an old product key required. That archive is for licensed users; it is not evidence of an unrestricted FreeOffice 2018 installer. The SoftMaker archive identifies the legacy package and key requirement.
