Softerra Adaxes is a directory-management and workflow layer for organizations that administer on-premises Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Exchange, or Microsoft 365. Its main value proposition is to route routine changes through role-based permissions, approvals, self-service, and event-driven automation. It is most relevant when a team wants consistent workflows across those systems; it is less useful as a governance layer for changes that administrators continue to make directly in native tools.
What Adaxes does
Softerra describes Adaxes as software that streamlines management and automation for Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, with Exchange and Microsoft 365 management in the same environment. It is not a physical product. The vendor’s feature set includes a browser-based interface, role-based delegation, corporate data standards, approval workflows, self-service, and automation. See Softerra’s product overview.
The web interface can be tailored for different audiences, including help desk staff, HR, administrators, and users handling their own requests. Softerra documents password resets and account unlocks as self-service examples. Approval steps can also be added to administrative operations, including multiple approvals for sensitive changes. Those options can reduce routine handoffs, but only for operations routed through Adaxes.
How Adaxes automation works
Adaxes describes automation built from triggers, conditions, workflows, and, where needed, scripts. A rule can respond to a directory event and apply conditional logic; the vendor’s examples include provisioning accounts, changing group memberships, configuring Exchange, and assigning Microsoft 365 licenses. Scheduled tasks and scripts can extend the workflows when built-in actions do not cover a requirement. Details are in Softerra’s feature information and its automation documentation.

#1 Best Overall
For onboarding, a team could define a workflow to create an account, set required attributes, add the person to appropriate groups, configure connected services, and assign a license. A corresponding offboarding workflow could disable access and initiate other defined changes. These are examples of what a configured system may automate, not a guarantee that a particular lifecycle process is included ready-made or that it will match an organization’s policies without configuration.
When assessing lifecycle coverage, map the actual events and exceptions: hires, transfers, leaves, departures, rehires, contractors, and changes that need approval. Verify which actions are built in, which need scripts, what permissions the service account requires, and how failures and retries are handled. Softerra’s sources describe capabilities, but do not provide independent measurements of time saved or comparative performance.
Governance: the key limitation to understand
Softerra characterizes Adaxes as a standalone proxy between users and directory or productivity systems. Native administration tools remain available. Its role permissions, approval flows, automation, and data standards govern operations performed through Adaxes; they do not automatically control direct changes made outside the product. This distinction determines whether Adaxes can provide consistent governance in practice: teams need to route the relevant work through it and manage exceptions made in other tools.
Softerra also says Adaxes does not store its data in AD or Entra ID, alter native permissions, or extend the directory schema. The product overview describes encrypted communications between the service and clients, and LDAPS or Kerberos for sensitive Active Directory communications, with an option to use LDAPS for all communications. These are vendor descriptions, not findings from an independent security audit or penetration test. Consult Softerra’s product documentation and evaluate the design against your own security requirements.

Supported environments and installation requirements
Adaxes is positioned for Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID management, alongside Exchange and Microsoft 365 tasks. Confirm that the exact services, domain topology, and hybrid scenarios your organization needs are supported before selecting a deployment design.
The installation guide specifies an on-premises Windows dependency: the computer hosting Adaxes must be joined to an Active Directory domain, even when managing Microsoft Entra domains only. All components require .NET Framework 4.8 or later. Softerra lists component-specific Windows and hardware requirements in its installation guide; check those requirements for the components you plan to install rather than sizing from the general product description.
Softerra recommends server editions for the web, REST API, and SPML components because workstation editions of IIS have concurrent-connection limits. Its documentation also describes multi-server deployments with shared configuration for high availability and fault tolerance. These deployment options add design and infrastructure work; determine component placement, capacity, availability needs, and recovery procedures before rollout.
Pricing and licensing
Softerra offers a 30-day free evaluation and perpetual licenses. Package size is based on enabled, non-expired user accounts in managed domains. The amounts below were listed on Softerra’s pricing page when checked on October 5, 2026; pricing can change, so confirm current terms directly with the vendor.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
| Managed account band | Listed license price |
|---|---|
| Up to 100 accounts | $1,600 |
| Up to 2,000 accounts | $10,800 |

Annual maintenance and support is shown separately. Softerra also notes that major-version upgrade charges may apply when maintenance is not active. The published entry prices are therefore not the whole cost of ownership: confirm maintenance, upgrade terms, and any quote conditions. See the official pricing page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether Adaxes fits
Adaxes is a stronger candidate when an organization has recurring directory administration across supported systems and wants those tasks handled through common workflows, delegated roles, or approvals. Its value depends on more than feature availability: the organization must also be willing to use Adaxes as the operational route for changes it wants governed.
- Environment: Check coverage for on-premises AD, Entra ID, Exchange, Microsoft 365, and your multi-domain or hybrid requirements.
- Governance: Determine whether role granularity and approval paths match your operating model, and whether teams can route relevant changes through Adaxes.
- Automation: Map event triggers, conditional workflows, scheduled work, scripts, and lifecycle cases against real onboarding, transfer, and offboarding processes.
- Deployment: Account for the domain-joined Windows host, .NET requirement, component sizing, server placement, and any high-availability design.
- Total cost: Confirm the account-count tier, maintenance and support, upgrade policy, and quote terms for larger environments.
Use the evaluation period to exercise representative workflows, approval routing, delegated help desk tasks, and exceptions handled in native tools. Confirm service-account permissions and how logging, retention, and recovery align with your organization’s controls using current product documentation. No independent comparative benchmark or hands-on test result is established here, so the fit should be decided against your requirements and evaluation results rather than assumed productivity gains.
