Yes—as a serious competitive challenge, not as proof that Snapdragon X2 Elite beats every rival laptop. Qualcomm’s X2 Elite family has produced promising CPU and AI results in both reference-system testing and a later retail-laptop comparison. But the evidence also shows Intel leading in integrated graphics and one battery test, while results depend on the laptop, workload, power profile and app compatibility.
What changed with Snapdragon X2 Elite?
Qualcomm announced Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme and Snapdragon X2 Elite on September 24, 2025, positioning them as premium processors for Windows PCs. At launch, Qualcomm said devices were expected in the first half of 2026; subsequent coverage reported X2 systems in retail laptops. Qualcomm’s current product page lists the Extreme, 18-core and 12-core X2 Elite, and X2 Plus models. Qualcomm’s launch announcement and its Snapdragon X Series Laptops page describe the family and its claims.
The headline performance figures are Qualcomm claims, not universal independent findings. At launch, the company said X2 Elite Extreme could deliver up to 75% faster CPU performance than competition at ISO power. For X2 Elite, Qualcomm claimed up to 31% faster performance at ISO power and up to 43% less power than the previous generation. It also specified an 80-TOPS Hexagon NPU for X2 Elite Extreme. Those “up to” results should be read in the context of the company’s named benchmarks, comparison systems and test conditions, not as a promise that every X2 laptop will be faster or last longer than every competitor.
Qualcomm also described the Extreme’s Adreno GPU architecture as providing a 2.3× improvement in performance per watt over the previous generation. That is a manufacturer comparison, not evidence that the GPU leads all competing integrated graphics in every game or graphics workload.

What did the reference-laptop testing show?
In a November 19, 2025 report, Tom’s Guide writer Jason England described testing three Qualcomm-provided reference-design laptops at a Qualcomm event in San Diego. These were not three retail laptop reviews, and the results should not be treated as a controlled comparison of commercially available models.
| Reference system | Processor configuration | Memory | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| X2 Elite | 12-core | 32GB | 22W |
| X2 Elite | 18-core | 32GB | 22W |
| X2 Elite Extreme | 18-core | 48GB | 45W |
England reported Geekbench 6.5 and Geekbench AI 1.5 results. In the displayed comparisons, an X2 Elite system matched Apple’s M5 in single-core results and led in multicore and AI results. These are findings from those reference systems and test versions; they do not establish that every X2 Elite laptop will reproduce the result against every M5 laptop, or that the same lead applies to other workloads. Tom’s Guide’s account provides the test context.

How does X2 Elite compare in retail laptops?
A later Windows Central report summarized a Signal65 comparison of three retail systems: an ASUS Zenbook A16 with Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, an MSI Prestige 16 with Intel Core Ultra X9 388H, and an HP OmniBook X 16 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 465. Windows Central reported that the X2 Elite Extreme system led in several CPU and AI tests. Signal65 reported it as up to 53% faster than Intel and up to 83% faster than AMD in Geekbench 7, and up to 87% faster in Cinebench 2026.
Those percentages describe reported results in that study, not general chip-versus-chip guarantees. The comparison was commissioned by Qualcomm, and the laptops came from different manufacturers with different cooling and power designs. Windows Central also reported that Intel’s integrated Arc B390 graphics led in the study and that the Intel laptop won one Office battery rundown test. That mix of outcomes is a useful reminder that “fastest” depends on what you ask the laptop to do. See Windows Central’s coverage of the Signal65 comparison for its reported setup and findings.

Where the evidence points—and where it does not
CPU and AI
The reference-system results and the commissioned retail comparison both suggest that X2 Elite Extreme can compete strongly in CPU and AI workloads. The retail report’s quoted conclusion was: “The Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme delivers the highest CPU and AI performance we have measured in a premium thin and light Windows laptop, holds that lead in the out-of-box Balanced mode and on battery, and does it at a lower retail price than its closest Intel competitor.” That statement is Signal65’s finding as quoted by Windows Central; the commissioning relationship and differences among laptop designs matter when interpreting it.
Graphics and battery
The retail comparison does not support a blanket claim of X2 graphics or battery superiority: Intel led in integrated graphics and won one Office battery rundown. Battery life and sustained performance can vary with the laptop’s display, battery, cooling, firmware and power settings, so a result for one model is not a guarantee for another.

Apple, Intel and AMD as competitors
The evidence makes X2 Elite a credible premium Windows challenger, especially for CPU- and AI-heavy work. It does not show that Apple, Intel or AMD should expect to lose across the board. The reference test and retail study use different systems and methods, and neither settles performance for every application, graphics workload or battery scenario.

Benchmarks are only part of the buying decision. Windows on Arm compatibility can affect whether an app runs natively or through Microsoft’s Prism emulation, and emulated apps may have different performance or behavior. Tom’s Guide noted that the list of apps rebuilt for Arm is growing, so check the current status of software you rely on rather than assuming broad compatibility from a processor benchmark. A useful comparison should also use the same benchmark version and task where possible, and name each laptop’s power and cooling configuration.

AI hardware specifications do not guarantee that every AI feature is immediately available. Microsoft’s Windows ecosystem coverage says NPU features can depend on software, subscription, provider enablement or a particular configuration. Check the requirements for the specific Windows feature or application you intend to use. Microsoft’s January 2026 Windows 11 PC ecosystem overview discusses the ecosystem and feature dependencies.
- Confirm that your essential apps and peripherals work on the exact Windows on Arm laptop configuration.
- Compare the same workload and benchmark version, separating single-core, multicore, graphics and AI results.
- Look for battery results from the specific retail model and test type you care about, rather than relying on a processor-family claim.
- Compare the actual laptop’s cooling, power settings, memory, screen and price; these are not held constant across different manufacturers’ systems.
Verdict: should Apple, Intel and AMD be worried?
They should take Snapdragon X2 Elite seriously as a stronger premium Windows option, particularly given the reported CPU and AI results. But the available evidence is not a declaration of a universal winner: Intel’s graphics and one battery result show why buyers should compare complete laptops and their own workloads, not just processor names or “up to” claims.
