Snapchat icons mean different things depending on where they appear. On the Chat screen, they report whether a Snap or Chat was sent, opened, viewed, screenshotted, replayed, or is pending; Friend Emojis describe changing usage patterns; and Story, Map, and profile symbols have their own rules. Use the screen and the event—not color alone—to identify an icon.
Chat Screen icons: sent, opened, received, and viewed
Snapchat’s Chat Screen icon guide groups status symbols by what happened and by whether the content was a Snap with audio, a Snap without audio, or a Chat. The shape and color help distinguish the symbols, but the meaning comes from the status category and content type.

| Viewed | A sent item has been viewed. | Snap with audio, Snap without audio, or Chat. The guide also lists a pending or expired Snap or Chat state. |
Do not read more into a status than it says. An opened or viewed icon reports an event; it does not explain why someone has or has not replied.
Gray pending icon
A gray pending symbol is not simply another way of saying “delivered.” Snapchat says it may appear, depending on privacy settings, when the other person has not accepted your friend request. The icon is a status cue, not evidence of the other person’s reason for not accepting.

Screenshot and replay icons
The Chat Screen guide also lists separate indicators for screenshots and replays. A screenshot indicator means a screenshot was taken of a Snap—with or without audio—or of a Chat. A replay indicator means a sent Snap, with or without audio, was replayed. These are distinct from the ordinary opened or viewed states.
Friend Emojis and Best Friends
Friend Emojis reflect how people use Snapchat with one another; they can change as that usage changes. Snapchat’s Friend Emoji guide gives these heart examples:
- Yellow heart: You and the other person are each other’s #1 Best Friend, meaning each sends the most Snaps to the other.
- Red heart: You have held that mutual #1 status for two consecutive weeks.
- Pink hearts: You have held that mutual status for two months.
These are usage-based, changing indicators, not permanent relationship labels. Snapchat says a user can have up to eight Best Friends; the list updates regularly and is not visible to other people. See How Best Friends work on Snapchat for the platform’s explanation.

Story icons and the eyes emoji
A circular Story preview beside a friend’s name on the Chat screen means that friend has updated their Story. Snapchat describes Stories among the content available around its Chat and Stories screens; the preview signals a new Story rather than a message status.

Snapchat says it counts how many friends rewatched that Story. It does not show which friends rewatched, and it is not the total number of replay events. Friend Solar System planet badges
Planets on a Friendship Profile belong to Friend Solar Systems, an optional Snapchat+ feature—not a universal Snapchat icon set. When the feature is on, a Best Friends badge with a gold ring appears on a Friendship Profile. Tapping it shows which planet you are in that friend’s Solar System, with planets corresponding to positions in the Best Friends list.

Snapchat says Friend Solar Systems is off by default for first-time subscribers and can be switched on or off. A missing planet badge therefore does not, by itself, indicate a friendship status. See Snapchat’s Friend Solar Systems explanation.
Snap Map location badges
A special badge may appear on a Bitmoji on Snap Map when Snapchat thinks the person is at a place such as home or school. Badges can also appear next to a friend’s name on the Map, in Friend Finder or Friends Feed, or beside a location in a Chat header.

Snapchat says you can toggle badges in Map privacy settings. Its privacy settings guide also distinguishes location sharing from submitting content: Snaps submitted to Snap Map may still appear on the Map regardless of location-sharing settings.

Profile badges: Snapchat+ is not verification
Snapchat uses different labels for subscription and verification. A Snap Star is a public figure, creator, or personality verified by Snap after review. A Snapchat+ or Snapchat Platinum badge indicates that the account holder chose a subscription and opted to display the badge, or is using a subscriber-exclusive feature. Snapchat explicitly says a subscription badge does not establish identity, authenticity, or endorsement by Snap.
So a subscription badge is not a verification check. Snapchat’s Snap Star information describes the verification label and criteria; profile labels may depend on current criteria and account state.

How to identify an unfamiliar Snapchat symbol
- Check where it appears. A Chat status, a Story indicator, a Friendship Profile badge, a Map badge, and a profile label belong to different systems.
- For Chat icons, identify the item and event. Check whether it is a Snap with audio, a Snap without audio, or a Chat, then whether the status says sent, opened, received, viewed, screenshot, replay, or pending/expired.
- Check the relevant conditions. Friend Emojis can change with usage; Map badges depend on location sharing; planet badges require the Snapchat+ feature; and profile badges may represent a subscription rather than verification.
- Compare the icon with Snapchat’s current help page or the in-app screen. Snapchat’s documentation explains the status categories, but it does not establish a universal, versioned inventory of every icon graphic across app releases and devices.
