If you usually carry your phone, a GPS-only smartwatch is likely enough: it can track workouts with its own GPS and handle calls, messages, and notifications when connected to your phone. Choose GPS + Cellular if you want to call or text from the watch when your phone is elsewhere—but budget for an eligible carrier plan in addition to the watch.

This guide compares cellular vs. non-cellular models for US buyers. The title’s 2025 date is outdated; carrier prices and watch lineups can change, so check current terms before buying.

GPS-only vs. GPS + Cellular: what changes?

“GPS-only” and “GPS + Cellular” describe connectivity options, not whether the watch can track your location. Apple’s GPS models use built-in GPS to record workout distance, pace, and route mapping. Cellular hardware is not necessary for those GPS workout features.

Decision GPS-only / non-cellular GPS + Cellular
Calls and messages away from your phone For Apple Watch, the iPhone must be nearby over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for calls, messages, and notifications. Apple’s model information. With an active service plan, Apple says calls and texts can work without the iPhone nearby. Apple’s model information.
Workout location tracking Built-in GPS can record distance, pace, and route mapping, according to Apple. Apple’s model information. Cellular service is not required for the Apple GPS workout functions described here. Apple’s model information.
Separate watch service plan No separate watch cellular plan is needed for the documented GPS-only configuration. Requires an active, eligible plan; support depends on the carrier, model, and account. Apple’s US carrier guidance.
Best fit Your phone is usually with you, and the watch mainly extends its notifications, connected calls, and workout tracking. You regularly leave your phone behind and want calling or messaging access directly from the watch.

When is a cellular smartwatch worth it?

Choose GPS-only if your phone is usually nearby

For many buyers, GPS-only covers the practical basics: workout location tracking and phone-connected features. If you bring your phone on runs and errands, paying for watch cellular service may not add much to your routine.

Choose GPS + Cellular when you want phone-free calling or messaging

Cellular is useful when you intentionally go out without your phone but still want the watch to reach calls or texts. The capability depends on service being active; buying cellular hardware alone does not provide a connection.

Apple’s product comparison uses the labels “GPS” and “GPS + Cellular.” Apple’s Series 12 store page presents those choices for that product. Verify the exact model and current availability when shopping.

Check carrier and model compatibility before buying

Compatibility is a purchase requirement, not a detail to sort out later. Apple says cellular models are optimized for the country where they are purchased, and there is no single Apple Watch model that supports cellular service worldwide. Its US carrier page lists supported carriers and compatible cellular models; it also advises checking whether your iPhone plan is eligible. Some prepaid and older accounts may not qualify.

For a Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE model, Samsung’s activation instructions name AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon and say the watch plan must match the phone’s carrier. Samsung’s model guidance warns that standalone voice calling may not be supported by every carrier or in every area.

  • Confirm that the exact watch model supports cellular on your carrier.
  • Ask whether your phone plan and account type are eligible, especially if you use prepaid or an older account.
  • Check that the phone and watch can be activated together under the carrier’s rules.
  • Confirm that the specific phone-free features you want—such as standalone voice calling—are supported in your area.
  • If buying or using the watch across countries, verify regional model support rather than assuming one version works worldwide.

What does smartwatch cellular service cost?

Cellular service adds a recurring charge. The following are examples from carrier pages accessed in 2026, not a universal US rate. The pages do not state the price year; plan terms and eligibility can change.

Carrier example Published price and qualification
Verizon $10 per line per month, plus taxes and fees, for the prepaid smartwatch plan described on Verizon’s plan page. The page also describes a number-sharing option.
AT&T Starting at $10.99 per month to add a smartwatch line to an eligible Unlimited plan, according to AT&T’s connected-wearables page.

Ask the carrier for the price and eligibility that apply to your account. Add the recurring charge to the watch’s purchase cost when deciding whether cellular is worth it.

Does cellular affect battery life?

The cited official pages do not provide a controlled battery-life comparison between cellular and GPS-only configurations. There is not enough evidence here to assign a specific battery-life advantage to either option.
