The controls vary by brand, model, region and software version, and no single opt-out necessarily stops every kind of data collection.
What smart TV tracking collects
Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) can identify content displayed on a TV. Depending on how a platform implements it, that can include content from built-in apps and external devices connected to the TV. Viewing information may then be used for purposes such as recommendations, audience measurement or advertising. FTC-hosted research published in 2020 describes ACR and a broader smart-TV advertising and tracking ecosystem; it is useful for understanding the mechanisms, not for estimating how prevalent ACR is across TVs today. FTC-hosted smart-TV tracking research
A documented historical example shows why the settings matter. In a 2017 enforcement action, the Federal Trade Commission said VIZIO TVs collected second-by-second viewing information, including content from cable, set-top boxes, DVDs, over-the-air broadcasts and streaming devices. The FTC said the case involved 11 million televisions and alleged that collection and sharing occurred without adequate notice and consent. The settlement required prominent disclosure and affirmative express consent, as well as deletion of specified previously collected data. This is a historical case about VIZIO, not evidence that every current smart TV collects the same information. FTC announcement, February 6, 2017
There is no current, independently measured cross-brand percentage established here for how many smart TVs use ACR. Treat the feature and its controls as model-specific rather than assuming all TVs collect the same data.

Turn off viewing-data collection on the TV
Start in the TV’s current Privacy, Terms or User Agreements area. Search the menus and privacy notices for labels such as “ACR,” “Viewing Data,” “Viewing Information Services,” “Smart TV Experience,” “Personalized Ads” and “App Usage Data.” Read the notice shown for your model: a similar setting name does not guarantee that two brands or models collect the same information.
Samsung
Samsung says users may opt out of ACR and collection of viewing history. Its support guidance points owners to the Viewing Information Services Privacy Notice and Smart Hub Privacy Notice in the TV’s Settings menu. Samsung does not provide a single menu path that applies to every model, so use the notices and controls displayed on your own TV. Samsung support guidance

Amazon Fire TV
Fire TV has separate controls for app usage and, on certain Fire TV smart TVs, over-the-air viewing data. To opt out of third-party app usage data, go to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Collect App Usage Data. Check Privacy Settings for an over-the-air viewing-data control if your TV offers one; changing one category does not necessarily change the other. Amazon Fire TV privacy guidance

ACR is only one possible data category. Turning it off is not a universal privacy switch: basic platform or app policies may still cover information such as app choices or location. - Ad personalization: Look for an advertising-ID or interest-based-ad setting and limit or reset the identifier if the platform offers that option. These controls affect personalization; they do not necessarily remove ads. Network Advertising Initiative connected-TV guide FTC consumer guidance
- App activity: Check whether the TV or streaming platform has a separate app-usage setting. Fire TV, for example, documents a control for third-party app usage data.
- Voice features: Review voice-assistant settings and permissions on the TV and any connected device. Controls differ by product; there is no single voice-data setting established for all TV brands.
- Connected devices: Repeat the review on every streaming stick, box or game console you use. A TV’s privacy settings do not automatically change the settings on attached devices.
Choose how much to restrict connected features
| Option | Privacy coverage | Convenience retained | Setup and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change TV and device settings | Limits the specific collection or personalization covered by each control; other data categories may remain. | Most connected services continue to work. | Low effort, but settings must be checked separately on relevant TVs and devices. |
| Use network-level DNS filtering | Adds a network layer that can block some domains, but does not guarantee that every collection channel is blocked. | Many services may continue to work, though blocked domains can disrupt useful features. | Requires configuration and upkeep. Pi-hole on a small computer such as a Raspberry Pi is one optional approach described in consumer guidance. Consumer Reports guidance |
| Disconnect the TV from the internet | Stops that TV’s internet communications while it is disconnected. | Online apps and connected services on the TV stop working; other household devices remain separate. | Simple to understand, but sacrifices the TV’s connected features. Disconnecting does not change collection by devices or services you continue to use. |
Apply the settings in a practical order
- Identify the platform and model. Open the TV’s current Privacy, Terms or User Agreements area and consult the notice shown for your device.
- Disable viewing recognition or history. Turn off ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services or the equivalent viewing-history control if available.
- Limit ad personalization. Change the personalized-ad or advertising-ID control if offered. Expect that ads may still appear.
- Check other permissions. Review app-usage and voice settings, then repeat the privacy review on each attached streaming device or box.
- Decide whether the TV needs internet access. If you do not use its online services, disconnect it from the network. If you prefer to keep connected services, consider DNS filtering only if you are comfortable configuring and troubleshooting it.
