Most smart-plug setup problems come down to a mismatch between the plug’s Wi-Fi requirements, the phone’s connection to the plug during setup, or the router credentials saved on the device. Check the instructions for your exact brand and model first: the 2.4 GHz requirement and orange-and-green setup light described below apply to TP-Link Kasa plugs, not every smart plug.
Before setup: check the plug and network requirements
Confirm the supported Wi-Fi band, required app, account requirements, and router security settings in the plug’s own setup guide. For Kasa plugs, TP-Link’s setup guide, last updated April 17, 2026, specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; Kasa plugs do not support 5 GHz. That requirement should not be assumed for other brands.
- Install the manufacturer’s app and sign in if the setup process requires an account.
- Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi network and make sure it has internet access.
- Power the plug near the router for initial setup, then move it to its intended location once it is connected.
- Check that your network does not require a captive-portal sign-in. Kasa does not support open Wi-Fi or captive-portal networks.
Set up a TP-Link Kasa plug
These steps describe Kasa setup. App screens and indicator lights vary by model and brand; follow your plug’s guide if its instructions differ.
- Install the Kasa app, sign in to a TP-Link account, connect your phone to the home network, and power the plug.
- In the Kasa app, add a device and select the matching plug model. The Kasa plug described by TP-Link blinks orange and green when it is in configuration mode. If it is not in that mode, use the exact model’s user guide or quick installation guide for reset or setup instructions.
- When the app prompts you, join the plug’s temporary Wi-Fi network. On iOS, it may appear as
TP-LINK_Smart Plug_XXXX. A “No Internet Connection” warning is expected while the phone is connected to this temporary network; return to the Kasa app and continue setup. - Select your home Wi-Fi network or enter its network name (SSID) and password manually. For Kasa, select a 2.4 GHz network.
- After the plug connects, give it a recognizable name and use the app to control it.
TP-Link lists Schedule, Timer, and Away mode among Kasa app controls, but availability can vary by model. Amazon Smart Plug owners should use Amazon’s official support page for Alexa app setup, routines, discovery, and reset guidance. Do not use Kasa light patterns or steps for an Amazon plug.

Fix “Unable to Find Your Device” or temporary Wi-Fi connection problems
If the app cannot find the plug, or reports “Unable to Connect to Your Smart Device’s Wi-Fi,” check whether the plug is powered and in setup mode before changing router settings.
- Confirm that you selected the correct model in the app and that its indicator shows setup mode. For Kasa, the documented configuration indicator blinks orange and green.
- If automatic discovery fails, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and manually join the plug’s temporary network, then return to the app. Do not leave setup just because the phone reports that this network has no internet.
- On iOS, allow Local Network access for the Kasa app.
- Turn off an active VPN temporarily, try a different phone, or forget a remembered network if the phone keeps switching away from the plug’s temporary Wi-Fi. These are TP-Link’s Kasa troubleshooting suggestions in its setup troubleshooting guide, last updated April 17, 2026.
Fix a plug that will not connect to the home Wi-Fi
If the plug reaches its temporary network but cannot join the router, verify the home network details and signal first.

- For Kasa, use a supported 2.4 GHz network and avoid open or captive-portal Wi-Fi.
For Kasa-specific router troubleshooting, TP-Link suggests WPA2+AES security, Wi-Fi channel 1, 6, or 11, and a 20 MHz channel width. If the plug still cannot connect, TP-Link also suggests temporarily turning off the router’s 5 GHz band. These are manufacturer troubleshooting suggestions for Kasa, not universal settings; check your router and plug documentation before changing network security or configuration.
Fix a plug that went offline after a router or password change
A Kasa or Tapo device may continue trying to connect to the old network details after a router replacement, reset, or Wi-Fi password change. TP-Link’s router-change guidance describes two approaches:

- If possible, configure the new router with the previous network’s SSID, encryption type, and password. The device may then reconnect using the details it already has.
- If you cannot reproduce the old network settings, reset and set up the plug again on the new Wi-Fi network. Use the exact model’s guide for reset instructions; reset procedures differ by model.
Fix intermittent dropouts or a plug that keeps going offline
Work through the connection from the plug outward so you can distinguish a weak signal from a router or device issue.
- Restart the router and the plug.
- Check the device’s signal reading in the app. TP-Link advises moving a Kasa plug closer to the router when its reported signal is below -70 dBm; this is a TP-Link troubleshooting threshold, not a universal Wi-Fi rule.
- Update the app and the plug’s firmware if updates are available.
- Consider whether band steering, Wi-Fi optimization, or channel optimization settings have changed. TP-Link lists these as possible factors in Kasa devices losing connection.
- As an isolation test, connect the plug to a different 2.4 GHz router or hotspot. If it stays connected there, the original router or its configuration may be involved. TP-Link outlines these checks in its offline troubleshooting guidance, updated March 28, 2024.
Schedules, timers, and internet outages
In Kasa, Schedule is the control for recurring on/off times; Timer is for running a device for a set duration, and Away mode is a separate feature. The setup documentation names these controls but does not provide a complete creation walkthrough or establish that every model behaves identically.

A TP-Link representative account distinguishes the Kasa Schedule feature from cloud-based automation and says cloud-based automation cannot work without internet. The answer, dated November 15, 2023, does not establish how every model’s schedule behaves after a power loss, reset, or other outage. Check the guide for your exact plug and distinguish a device’s Schedule feature from cloud automation rather than assuming all routines work offline.
