Which privacy settings should you review first?
Meta’s controls are not one master privacy switch. Voice, capture-related preferences, notifications, and location permissions are distinct areas, and changing one does not establish that the others are disabled. Meta describes app-based setting management for its AI glasses, but labels and available controls can vary by model, app version, platform, and region. - Voice activation: Disable hands-free activation if you do not use voice commands.
- Capture and sharing: Review which capture-related preferences are enabled and what information you choose to share with Meta.
- Notifications: Turn off previews or alerts that could reveal private information if those controls are available for your model.
- Location: Review location permission in the app or the device’s platform settings.
Should you turn off “Hey Meta” voice activation?
If you rarely use voice commands, turning off hands-free voice activation is a practical privacy choice. Meta says voice controls can be turned off if you choose not to use Meta AI. You will lose the convenience of starting supported voice interactions hands-free, but do not interpret this setting as disabling every microphone or all device processing. Meta’s guidance covers voice controls; the FTC’s general advice about voice assistants notes that assistants can mishear a wake word and start recording unexpectedly. That is general assistant guidance, not a finding specific to smart glasses.
Where do photos and videos go?
Meta says gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until you choose to move them to your phone. That statement is specifically about gallery captures; it does not mean every AI prompt, voice interaction, or other feature is processed only on the glasses. Consider gallery transfer separately from any sharing or AI features, and review the app’s capture-related preferences before enabling options you do not need. What should you do with notifications and location?
Notifications
Check notification preferences in the Meta AI app. If your model offers notification previews or alerts, disable the ones that might expose message content or other personal details in public. Meta confirms notification preferences generally, but available switches are not the same for every model, so use the controls actually shown for your glasses.
Location
Review location access in the app and your phone’s operating-system settings. Meta says location permissions can be adjusted, but its cited materials do not establish one universal click path. Snap’s Spectacles app separately allows location to be disabled; that is a Snap-specific control, not a setting that applies to Meta glasses. Are the glasses recording, and what should bystanders know?
Meta says its AI glasses use a white capture LED that blinks when content is being captured for the gallery. In a July 7, 2026 FAQ, Meta said that covering or disabling the LED automatically disables the camera; the company also described updates to detection of physical tampering or destruction. These are Meta’s statements about its safeguards, not independent test results. Do not cover or interfere with the indicator. Meta’s responsible-use guidance advises asking permission before taking a photo or video. Ask before capturing people, and avoid recording in sensitive places or situations where people reasonably expect privacy. A visible indicator is not a substitute for consent or good judgment. Do these settings apply to every brand of smart glasses?
No. Do not assume that Meta’s app controls or storage descriptions carry over to another manufacturer. Snap says its Spectacles require camera and microphone access for device operation, including AR interaction, recorded videos, and voice commands; its app provides a separate location control. Snap also says account deletion removes associated face, hand, and voice information, while otherwise feature data is deleted within three years of the user’s last Snapchat use. Those statements apply to Snap Spectacles and Snap’s cited documentation, not all smart glasses.
