Before using smart glasses, review the companion app’s controls for AI camera use, cloud-media processing, voice follow-up listening, activity history, and notifications. The settings are not universal across brands. The steps below use Ray-Ban Meta glasses as the example; check your own model’s current app and manufacturer guidance for equivalent controls.
Start with the Ray-Ban Meta app’s privacy controls
Menu names and defaults can change with app and software updates, so confirm the labels on your device. In the Ray-Ban Meta app, review the Meta AI settings and the options for camera use, cloud media, voice follow-up, and activity. These controls govern distinct features: turning off an optional AI function should not be treated as turning off the glasses’ ordinary camera or every form of data processing.
Choose whether Meta AI can use the camera
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ says camera-based AI works when Meta AI and Camera use are enabled in the app. If you ask the glasses a question about what you are looking at, they send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing. The FAQ says photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with help from trained reviewers. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes this service handling; it does not mean every ordinary photo or video is automatically uploaded.
If you do not want a scene sent for an AI answer, do not ask the glasses to analyze it, and review the Meta AI and Camera use options in the app. Do not assume one toggle controls all processing or disables the regular camera.

Decide whether to enable cloud-media enhancement
Cloud media is a separate optional feature from asking Meta AI about a live camera view. Ray-Ban describes it as cloud processing for higher-quality photos and videos, montages, and curated suggestions. Its US FAQ says media is temporarily stored in the cloud for 30 days and then automatically expires when this feature is used. You can turn the feature off in settings; deleting gallery items also deletes them from the cloud.
If you prefer not to use this cloud enhancement, switch it off in the app. That choice is distinct from the camera-based AI request described above, which sends a photo when you ask Meta AI to interpret what you are seeing.

Check voice activation and follow-up listening
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ identifies a Meta AI option called “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’.” In the FAQ version reviewed, it is enabled by default. When on, the microphone stays on briefly after a request so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase. If there is no additional request, it turns off after a few seconds. The option is unavailable while the microphone is already actively used for some functions.
Look under Meta AI settings in the app and turn off “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” if you do not want this follow-up listening window. Check your own app rather than relying on a remembered default, since software revisions may change settings or labels.

Review AI activity and voice recordings
Ray-Ban’s FAQ points users to the app’s AI tab for conversations and to the activity log for voice activity. Review those records and use the available controls to delete voice recordings you no longer want retained.
Meta says deleted information will not be used for future training, while also warning that deleting information does not instantly undo patterns a model has already learned. In Meta’s words, “If I delete a piece of information a model learned from, the model won’t change in that moment.” Meta’s responsible-innovation FAQ explains this distinction: deletion limits future use of that information, but it is not an instant reversal of prior model learning.

Know what the capture light does—and respect bystanders
Meta says a capture LED lights when the camera is in use. In a July 2026 company Q&A, Meta said the white capture LED has no off switch; covering or disabling it automatically disables the camera. The same Q&A says gallery photos and videos remain privately stored on the glasses until you import them to a phone. These statements concern Meta AI glasses and should not be assumed to describe other brands. See Meta’s July 2026 Q&A.
An indicator is not a substitute for consent. Meta advises asking people around you before taking a photo or video. Follow venue rules, explain the device when appropriate, and do not record in sensitive settings without clear permission. Do not cover or disable the capture light as a workaround.

First-use checklist
- Review Meta AI and Camera use settings, and decide whether you want camera-based AI answers.
- Turn cloud-media enhancement off if you do not want that optional cloud processing.
- Check “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” and disable it if you do not want the brief follow-up listening window.
- Find the AI tab and voice activity log, and learn where recording deletion controls are.
- Understand the capture indicator and ask permission before recording people.
For other smart glasses, use the manufacturer’s current guidance and companion app rather than assuming Ray-Ban Meta’s controls, defaults, or storage behavior apply.
