If you have found a yellow, foamy patch on garden mulch, it may be a slime mould—not a fungus. Slime moulds are outside Kingdom Fungi: unlike fungi, which typically absorb nutrients through networks of threadlike hyphae, slime moulds have amoeba-like feeding stages that engulf microbes and small organic particles. They may look alarming, but garden slime moulds described by horticultural sources do not attack plants; control is generally unnecessary.

How slime moulds and fungi differ

The name is misleading: slime moulds are not true fungi. The National Park Service notes that slime moulds show some characteristics common to fungi and animals, but their feeding biology sets them apart. Fungi typically grow as hyphae—threadlike structures that access food—and those threads collectively form a mycelium. Slime moulds instead feed as amoeba-like cells or, in some groups, as a moving mass that engulfs food.

Feature Slime moulds Fungi
Classification Outside Kingdom Fungi. Missouri Department of Conservation places the dog-vomit slime mould, Fuligo septica, in phylum Amoebozoa. Members of Kingdom Fungi.
Feeding Amoeba-like cells or a plasmodium engulf bacteria, fungal spores and small organic particles. Hyphae access nutrients; the hyphal network is called a mycelium.
Vegetative form Some remain separate cells; plasmodial forms can be one mass with many nuclei. Commonly threadlike hyphae, often organized into a mycelium.
Spore-bearing structures Can form structures that release spores. Can form spore-producing structures, including mushrooms and moulds.
Garden role May occur on mulch, leaf litter or stems; sources say they do not attack plants. Many decompose dead material; some also interact with living plants.

These are broad distinctions, not a way to identify every organism from appearance alone. “Protist” is sometimes used as a convenient broad label, but it should not imply that every organism called a slime mould belongs to one unified taxonomic group.

Why the two can look alike

Both can produce visible, spore-bearing structures. A mushroom is a fungus’s visible reproductive structure, not the whole fungus; much of the organism may be a less visible mycelium in the material it grows through. Slime moulds also form structures that release spores, even though their feeding stage is unlike a fungus’s hyphal network. Spores alone therefore do not make an organism a fungus.

Slime moulds can also appear on plant stems without feeding on the plant. The Royal Horticultural Society explains that stems may simply support a slime mould’s spore-producing structures. A patch can temporarily cover or obscure a small seedling, but that is different from a fungal disease attacking plant tissue.

Two different slime-mould life cycles

“Slime mould” is a common grouping, not one life cycle shared in identical form by every member. A useful distinction is between cellular and plasmodial slime moulds.

Cellular slime moulds

These organisms live as separate cells. When cells respond to a food source, they can aggregate, but each cell retains its own boundary. Their fruiting bodies release spores, which germinate into amoeboid cells.

Plasmodial slime moulds

In plasmodial forms, amoeboid cells join into a single membrane-bound mass containing many nuclei. This plasmodium can move as its protoplasm streams through the mass. When conditions change—including when food becomes scarce in the forms described by the RHS—it can produce spore-bearing structures. The spores germinate into single-celled forms; in very wet conditions, some of those forms can grow flagella and swim.

Fungi follow a different basic pattern: their hyphae form a network that accesses nutrients. Removing a visible mushroom does not necessarily remove the underlying fungal growth, as UC Agriculture and Natural Resources notes.

What the dog-vomit slime mould looks like

Fuligo septica, commonly called dog-vomit or scrambled-egg slime mould, is a familiar garden example. The Missouri Department of Conservation describes its plasmodium as a yellow, tan or whitish foamy mass. As it dries into a spore-producing stage, it can become darker and crusty. It is often found on mulch, decaying wood and other rotting plant material in warm, humid weather.

The appearance can change substantially between feeding and spore-producing stages, so a fresh bright patch and a dried crust may be the same organism at different points in its cycle. The Missouri guide lists this species as not edible; do not treat it as food.

Are slime moulds harmful to plants, people or pets?

University of Maine Cooperative Extension says slime moulds are harmless to most plants, pets and, for the most part, people. They are not described as plant pathogens, and there is no basis in these garden sources for treating their appearance as a fungal infection. Spores may irritate people with respiratory conditions, so avoid deliberately disturbing a dry, spore-producing patch if that is a concern.

Slime moulds also have an ecological role: they consume microbes and contribute to food-web processes and nutrient recycling in decaying material. Fungi also play major roles in decomposition and soil ecosystems, and some form beneficial associations with plant roots.

What to do when one appears in the garden

Usually, nothing. University of Maine Extension says no pesticide is recommended, and the RHS says control is not required. If an unsightly patch is on a visible surface, the RHS suggests dispersing it with water. That is cosmetic dispersal, not eradication: water can raise or spread spores once the slime mould is in its spore-producing stage, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

  • On mulch or decaying wood: Leave it alone if it is not in the way; it is using decomposing material and does not need pesticide treatment.
  • On a seedling or other visible surface: You can disperse the patch with water for appearance, while recognizing this may move spores rather than eliminate the organism.
  • If respiratory irritation is a concern: Avoid disturbing a dry, spore-bearing patch.
