McLaren’s Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking is a private, working headquarters for McLaren Racing and other McLaren Group operations—not a public museum. The parts McLaren and Google have shown include a wind tunnel, driver simulator, Mission Control, car displays and selected public areas; confidential engineering spaces remain off-limits.
What the McLaren Technology Centre is
The MTC is McLaren Racing’s Woking headquarters and the home of its Formula 1 team. It is also a controlled workplace used by McLaren Group companies, corporate partners and invited guests. Public photographs and virtual views represent selected areas, not a complete tour of the building.
McLaren’s 2013 description reported 57,000 square metres of covered space and more than 5,000 tonnes of steelwork in the main frame. Those are historical company figures from 2013, not verified current measurements.
The wind tunnel: a racing laboratory
McLaren describes the MTC wind tunnel as a laboratory for studying Formula 1 aerodynamics. Engineers investigate aerodynamic efficiency and balance, cooling performance and component optimisation, then use the findings to guide car development and future track upgrades.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The project replaced an older MTC tunnel. McLaren says the previous facility had not been used for Formula 1 development since 2010, when the team began renting Toyota’s wind tunnel in Germany. A 2019 survey examined whether the old installation should be upgraded or replaced. Engineering Project Manager Hannah Allan said: “Once the project had been approved, we carried out our design process simultaneously with the demolition of the existing wind tunnel,”
McLaren presents the tunnel as part of a wider investment programme that also includes upgrades to the machine shop, a next-generation simulator and composites work at the team’s former Woking base. Those are separate facilities; the composites site is not described as being inside the MTC.
What the published numbers mean
A 2013 McLaren article gave the then-existing wind tunnel a length of 145 metres. That figure should not be treated as the specification of the replacement tunnel. McLaren’s video walk-through, led by then Director of R&D and Technology Christian Schramm, shows an official view of the facility but does not establish that every system or area is publicly visible.

How the simulator supports the F1 team
The simulator occupies a private room marked “Strictly no admittance. Authorised personnel only.” It is an engineering and race-support system, not an arcade attraction.

Inputs from the car and circuit
McLaren feeds the simulator data from its Formula 1 cars and conditions recorded at the circuit. Inputs include ambient air conditions that affect tyre behaviour and wind profiles that influence the car’s balance. Simulator driver Will Stevens explains: “Sims have come on massively. We put in every single piece of data that we can get from the F1 cars, which have so many data channels that we can correlate to.”
Driver feedback and race-weekend use
The team applies track data to a wind model covering direction, speed, force and gusts. Drivers then assess whether the simulated balance matches what they experienced on track. Between sessions during a race weekend, this process can help engineers evaluate changes and prepare recommendations while the physical car is still running at the circuit.

Mission Control, data and the people behind decisions
Google’s documented MTC views identify Mission Control as McLaren’s race-performance base, where engineers and strategists analyse race data and support decisions for the team on track. The wider performance system links computational fluid dynamics, wind-tunnel work, simulator results and live race information.
In a 2026 ITPro interview, McLaren Racing executive director of performance technology and systems Dan Keyworth described a modern Formula 1 car as carrying about 300 sensors and said approximately 1,200 people work at Woking. These are figures from his account, not independently audited totals. Keyworth also said, “Every year, there’s more data that we can digest and gain insight from.” His warning about the sport’s pace is direct: “You’ve got to evolve in this sport. You stand still; you’re going backwards.”
Architecture and environmental systems
Sir Norman Foster’s Foster + Partners designed the MTC, according to McLaren’s 2013 overview. That account described daylight and ventilation strips between building sections and extensive landscaping around the site.

The same article reported an artificial lake holding 50,000 cubic metres of water. McLaren said lake water was pumped through heat exchangers to cool the building and its electrical systems and to dissipate heat from the wind tunnel. Like the floor-area, steelwork and tunnel-length figures, this is a dated company description rather than a current independent measurement.

Remote viewing with Google Street View
Google announced an MTC Street View collection in 2023. It lets remote visitors inspect selected views that include McLaren cars, an F1 cockpit perspective, Mission Control and the McLaren Shadow Studio.
This is a digital collection of chosen viewpoints, not unrestricted live access to current operations. Google’s announcement establishes what was included when launched; coverage and availability can change, so check the collection directly.
Quick Recap
What the public material does—and does not—show
- Shown: selected public spaces, the wind-tunnel environment, simulator explanations, displays, Mission Control and Shadow Studio views.
- Not established: a complete room-by-room map, current operational specifications for every system, or access to confidential design and race-work areas.
- Best interpretation: the MTC is an integrated engineering and operations workplace whose visible architecture is only the front edge of a much larger development process.
