A slide switch is a mechanical switch operated by moving an actuator along a straight path. It opens or closes a circuit, or connects a circuit to a different path, and usually remains in the selected position until moved again. The right switch depends on its pole-and-throw arrangement, whether it latches or returns when released, and—most importantly—the exact voltage and current ratings in its datasheet.

How a slide switch works

Moving the actuator changes which electrical contacts are connected. In a maintained-contact, or latching, switch, the contacts stay in the selected state after you let go. A momentary or self-return switch moves back when released; that behavior is separate from the switch’s pole-and-throw topology.

Slide switches are used for on/off control and for selecting between circuit paths. TE Connectivity describes them as mechanical switches that slide between open and closed positions to control current flow. The precise function and electrical limits depend on the individual part.

What SPST, SPDT, DPST, and DPDT mean

The letters describe the switch’s poles and throws: a pole is a circuit path being switched, while a throw is a contact destination that pole can connect to. “Single” and “double” indicate one or two poles or throws.

Type What it switches Typical use
SPST One pole connects or disconnects one circuit path. Basic on/off control.
SPDT One pole connects to either of two throws. Selecting one of two inputs, modes, or sources.
DPST Two independent poles switch their circuits together with one action. Turning two circuit paths on or off together.
DPDT Two poles each select between two throws. Routing two circuits simultaneously; a common arrangement for reversing polarity when wired appropriately.

These names describe contact arrangement, not the number of actuator positions or whether the switch is maintained or momentary. Check the part’s schematic and position description to confirm how its contacts behave.

Choose a topology for the job

  • Basic on/off: Choose SPST if one circuit needs to be opened and closed, and the load is within the part’s ratings.
  • One of two choices: Choose SPDT to route a common connection to one of two outputs, such as alternative inputs or operating modes.
  • Two paths switched together: Choose DPST when one action must switch two independent circuits.
  • Two paths, each with two destinations: Choose DPDT when both circuits need changeover routing. Reversing a motor or polarity is possible only with suitable wiring and a switch rated for that load.

For multi-position or multi-throw switches, confirm the manufacturer’s contact diagram rather than inferring the connections from the actuator positions alone.

Check the electrical ratings before choosing

There is no universal current or voltage rating for slide switches. A small-looking switch may be intended for low-current signals, while another design supports a larger load. Use the datasheet for the exact part number; do not estimate capacity from its size or appearance.

Compare the specified AC or DC voltage and current with the actual circuit. Motor loads, capacitive loads, and other loads with high startup or inrush current may need additional rating checks. A stated resistive-load rating does not automatically establish suitability for those applications.

Compare the details that affect fit and reliability

Once the circuit arrangement and load are known, use the manufacturer’s datasheet to check the following details. Selection guides from DigiKey and GlobalSpec also identify electrical ratings and physical or life specifications as selection factors.

  • Contact timing: Shorting, or make-before-break, contacts connect the next path before disconnecting the current one. Non-shorting, or break-before-make, contacts disconnect one path before making the next. Choose based on whether brief overlap or interruption is acceptable in the circuit.
  • Mounting and termination: Surface-mount and through-hole switches are intended for PCB assembly. Panel-mount designs and solder-lug, screw, blade, or wire-lead terminals can suit chassis wiring or retrofit work. Match the switch to the board or wiring method.
  • Physical fit and operation: Check pitch, actuator height and shape, travel, operating force, board orientation, panel cutout, and clearance around the actuator. Confirm the dimensions against the enclosure and assembly drawing.
  • Environment and assembly: Check sealing or IP rating where dust or moisture matters, and confirm whether the switch is washable if the assembly process requires it. A sealing rating and washability are not interchangeable assumptions.
  • Contact and insulation properties: Review contact material and plating, dielectric strength, and insulation resistance where they matter to the design.
  • Life: Compare mechanical life and electrical life under the relevant load conditions. Mechanical endurance alone does not establish how long contacts will last while switching a particular electrical load.

Mounting styles, sizes, and common applications

Slide switches are available in subminiature, miniature, and standard sizes, with flush or raised actuators. Depending on the series, options may include illumination or wiping contacts. PCB-mounted versions are suited to board assembly, while panel-capable and wired-terminal forms can support controls mounted on an enclosure or chassis. Verify those features for the exact part rather than assuming every series offers them.

Manufacturers and distributors list slide switches for appliances, automotive systems, consumer electronics, lighting, medical devices, telecommunications, and test and measurement equipment. The application category alone does not establish that a switch is suitable: electrical rating, environment, mounting, and life requirements still need to match.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Define the circuit function. Decide whether you need simple on/off control, one-of-two selection, or coordinated switching of two circuits.
  2. Choose the contact arrangement. Use the part’s schematic to confirm its poles, throws, number of positions, and contact connections.
  3. Set position behavior. Specify maintained/latching or momentary/self-return operation as required.
  4. Match the load. Check the exact part’s AC/DC voltage and current ratings, including relevant inrush or motor-load limits.
  5. Confirm contact timing. Select make-before-break or break-before-make behavior according to the circuit’s needs.
  6. Check the physical interface. Match mounting, terminal style, pitch, actuator dimensions, travel, force, and panel or board clearance.
  7. Check the environment and service life. Verify sealing, washability, contact and insulation specifications, and electrical and mechanical life.

For example, a board-mounted switch for choosing between two low-current signal paths points toward an SPDT topology, but that is only a starting point: its voltage and current ratings, contact timing, footprint, actuator clearance, and environment must also match the design.
