Choose Sky Q if you want local recordings and live TV delivered by satellite or cable; choose Sky Stream if you want to avoid a dish or cable installation and have reliable broadband. Q can keep delivering live TV when your internet is down, while Stream delivers all content—including live channels—over the internet. Stream’s playlist is not a recording: it gathers programmes available on demand or through partner services.
This comparison is UK-oriented. Features are drawn from Sky’s product information, while prices below are UK offers listed on Sky’s package page on 7 October 2026; check the terms and eligibility shown for your account before ordering.

How Sky Q and Sky Stream deliver TV
The main difference is the route the programme takes to your television. Sky Q receives live TV over a cable or satellite connection; it uses the internet for apps and on-demand services. Sky Stream receives all its content, including live TV, through the internet. Sky outlines the distinction in its Sky Q and Sky Stream comparison.
- Sky Q: A better fit if your home already has a suitable dish or cable connection, or you want live TV that does not rely entirely on broadband.
- Sky Stream: A better fit if you do not want a dish or cable installation and your broadband is reliable enough for regular streaming.
This difference matters most when broadband is unavailable or unreliable. Q’s satellite or cable live-TV reception can continue without internet, although internet-dependent features such as apps and on-demand viewing will not. Stream depends on an internet connection for viewing.
Recordings, playlists and watching later
Sky Q records programmes locally
Sky Q has a hard drive for recording programmes to watch later. Sky describes the receiver as able to save up to 500 hours of shows; the available capacity and what you can record depend on the box and service terms. The recordings feature is useful if you regularly save live programmes or want a local copy rather than relying on a title remaining available on demand. Sky’s product overview describes Q’s recording and live-TV features.
Sky Stream uses a playlist, not a recording
Stream has no local recording function. Its playlist collects titles that are available on demand or through partner services; adding a programme does not create a recording or guarantee that it will remain available. Playback still requires internet access, and availability depends on the service providing the programme. If you are used to recording a broadcast and keeping it on a box, this is a meaningful difference.
Installation and home setup
Sky Q requires a cable or satellite connection
Q needs the appropriate cable or satellite connection as well as a network connection for apps and on-demand services. It is the more natural option when that connection is already installed and you want to keep using it.

Sky Stream is self-installed
Stream needs broadband, a television with HDMI and a power socket. Sky describes it as self-installable and says no dish or cable connection is required. It supports Wi-Fi; a LAN connection is also an option, but an Ethernet cable is not required in every home. If your broadband is inconsistent, check the connection where the box and television will be used before switching to an internet-only TV service.

Watching in other rooms
Both services offer ways to watch beyond the main television, but the available method and entitlement depend on the setup and package.
- Sky Q: Additional viewing may be available through the Sky Q app on supported devices or with a Sky Q Mini receiver.
- Sky Stream: Sky’s comparison describes up to two additional Stream boxes with its multiscreen option. Confirm the current limit, price and eligibility for your account before relying on that setup.
UHD and picture quality
Both services support some UHD/4K content, but neither promises that every programme is available in that format. On Stream, Sky specifies a compatible 4K television and the Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack. Sky’s UK package page lists that pack at £6 per month and gives a 30 Mbps minimum broadband speed; Sky’s Stream FAQ specifies 30 Mbps for UHD and 35 Mbps for UHD with Whole Home. These are Sky’s stated requirements, not a guarantee of uninterrupted UHD playback. Content, equipment, package and connection all matter, and Sky notes that not all content is available in UHD or HDR.

The available official information does not establish a universal picture-quality winner between Q and Stream. Actual results depend on the programme and display; Stream also depends on the quality and stability of the internet connection.

Sky’s UK package page, checked 7 October 2026, lists the following options for new customers. The figures are package prices, not a like-for-like total for Q versus Stream; equipment, add-ons, eligibility and contract terms can affect what you pay. Sky says prices may change.

These are Sky’s advertised new-customer options, not a guaranteed quote for every household. Check the current inclusions and the offer available to you on Sky’s package comparison page. On 11 February 2026, Sky announced package-specific access to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Hayu; the announcement makes access conditional on the customer’s service and package, so do not assume all four services are included with every Q or Stream subscription. See Sky’s announcement for the stated terms.
Which service fits your home?
Choose Sky Q if…
- You have, or want, a suitable satellite or cable connection.
- You regularly record live programmes and want them saved on the box.
- You want live-TV reception that does not depend wholly on broadband.
Choose Sky Stream if…
- You want to avoid dish or cable installation.
- You prefer self-installation and an internet-delivered service.
- Your broadband is reliable where you watch TV, and a playlist is an acceptable alternative to local recordings.
There is no substantiated general performance result showing that one is faster, more reliable or better-looking in every home. The practical decision is whether you value Q’s satellite/cable delivery and recordings more than Stream’s installation flexibility and internet-based delivery.
