Siri is the iPhone’s built-in assistant for system tasks and Apple context; ChatGPT is a generative assistant you can call through several Apple Intelligence features. They are not an either-or choice: Siri can hand a request to ChatGPT, while Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Image Playground, and Shortcuts offer other ways to use ChatGPT. Apple’s iOS 27 Siri AI beta adds personal context, onscreen awareness, broader answers, and more app actions, but its availability is limited. Apple’s feature documentation describes capabilities, not a head-to-head test of accuracy or quality.
What is the difference between Siri and ChatGPT on iPhone?
Siri is integrated into iPhone: you can speak or type requests, ask follow-up questions, get Apple product help, and use it for everyday tasks. ChatGPT is a separate generative assistant that Apple Intelligence can make available from Siri and other features. You can explicitly route a request by saying “Ask ChatGPT,” or accept Siri’s offer to use it when Siri thinks it may help. Apple describes Siri’s built-in role and Apple Intelligence features; its iPhone guide explains the ChatGPT extension.
With iOS 27, Apple’s Siri AI beta extends Siri with personal context, awareness of onscreen content, broader knowledge, and actions across apps. That is an expanded version of Siri, not another name for ChatGPT. ChatGPT remains an optional service that can be invoked from supported Apple Intelligence entry points.
What Siri and Siri AI can do
Everyday Siri
Siri is useful when a request involves the iPhone or Apple services: ask questions by voice or text, follow up in a conversation, or request help with Apple products. Which capabilities appear depends on factors such as language, country, and region.

Siri AI in iOS 27 beta
Apple says Siri AI adds or emphasizes these capabilities:
- Answering questions across a broad range of topics.
- Using personal context across apps such as Messages, Mail, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders.
- Understanding what is onscreen and answering questions about it or taking action.
- Performing actions across apps, including sending messages and creating events.
- Offering a dedicated Siri app with conversation history synced across Apple devices through iCloud.
- Helping draft, edit, or provide feedback on writing.
- Using Visual Intelligence, including a Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app.
These are Apple’s stated features, not evidence that Siri AI is more accurate or better than ChatGPT at a given task. See Apple’s Siri AI eligibility and feature information.

What ChatGPT can do through Apple Intelligence
On a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence, the ChatGPT extension has several entry points. Apple documents these uses:
- Siri: Ask ChatGPT for a response or a more involved answer, such as “Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT to compose a haiku about dragons.”
- Writing Tools: Compose or work with text and images through the available writing features.
- Image Playground: Access additional image styles.
- Visual Intelligence: Ask about places or objects.
- Shortcuts: Use a ChatGPT model for more complex requests in a shortcut.
Some requests can draw on content you are already viewing. With a photo open in Photos, for example, you can ask, “What kind of recipes can I make with this?” With a document open in Files, you can ask Siri to have ChatGPT summarize it. Apple also gives examples such as recommendations based on a relative’s fishing hobby or ideas for spending an afternoon in Malibu. For these workflows, the distinction is not simply “Siri does visuals, ChatGPT does text”: Siri AI has onscreen and visual features, and ChatGPT can be reached for questions about images, places, documents, and more. The precise feature depends on the iPhone, software, and availability.

Which assistant should you use?

This is a task-based choice, not a quality ranking. Apple’s published feature descriptions do not provide controlled comparisons of Siri and ChatGPT for accuracy, speed, or user satisfaction, so there is no supported basis here for declaring one the better assistant overall.
How to set up ChatGPT on iPhone
Apple documents the following setup path for the iOS 26 ChatGPT extension:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap ChatGPT under Extensions.
- Tap Set Up, then choose whether to use ChatGPT without an account or connect an existing account.
You can use the extension without signing in. Sign in if you want requests saved to your ChatGPT chat history; Apple says a paid ChatGPT account can allow advanced ChatGPT capabilities to be used more often. The names and availability of settings can change with software updates; Apple’s current iPhone guide is the reference for the documented extension.

Apple says the ChatGPT extension sends the request and any attachments, along with limited request metadata such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature used. Apple says the IP address is obscured while general location is provided. Apple also says it asks for confirmation before sending photos or files, even if you have turned off confirmations for ordinary ChatGPT requests. For other requests, confirmation behavior can be changed in Settings.

For unauthenticated use, Apple says OpenAI must process the information to fulfill the request and does not store it or use it to train models, except as required by law. If you sign in to a ChatGPT account, that account’s settings and OpenAI’s privacy policies apply. These are Apple’s descriptions of the integration, not independently audited findings. Review Apple’s ChatGPT integration guidance and your ChatGPT account settings before sending sensitive material.
Requirements and availability
Siri AI
In an article published September 22, 2026, Apple lists iOS 27 and these compatible devices for Siri AI: iPhone 15 Pro models and later, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air. The device language and Siri language must match and be a supported language; the Apple Account must also be in an eligible region. Apple’s current support article says Siri AI is available in English. It also says Siri AI is not available for iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS in the EU, and does not currently work for Apple Account regions in mainland China. Access involves a waitlist, with wait times that can vary. Check Apple’s latest requirements before relying on a specific feature.
ChatGPT extension
The extension depends on Apple Intelligence availability and is offered only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Apple Intelligence itself is not available on every iPhone model, language, or region. Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement described Siri AI beta rollout in English and announced French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support for the following month; that announcement is not confirmation that those languages are available now. For current Apple Intelligence eligibility, consult Apple’s compatibility and availability information as well as the ChatGPT-on-iPhone guide. Some Apple Intelligence server-side features may also have daily usage limits that vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand, and other factors.
