After a major The Sims 4 patch, first check that the game works with mods disabled; then re-enable Enable Custom Content and Mods and, if you use script mods, Script Mods Allowed under Game Options > Other. Quit and relaunch the game for those changes to take effect. Do not choose Save and Exit while mods are off: EA warns that doing so can remove modded content from a save. The game deliberately disables mods after updates; it does not normally delete the files from your Mods folder.
The rest of the post-patch checklist is targeted: clear the mod cache, update files that are incompatible with the new build, revisit graphics only if performance has worsened, and check any new options the patch added. The October 27, 2026 update is a useful current example: it introduced save-wide muscle and weight controls and moved self-interactions into a new Sim pie-menu category.
What should you do first after a Sims 4 patch?
Start with a safe, unmodded launch—not by immediately turning the mod switches back on. EA disables Mods after updates to limit gameplay problems, and the game needs to be checked before you add potentially incompatible files back into the mix. The game version is shown at the lower left of the Main Menu; note it before troubleshooting or contacting a mod creator.

- Launch with Mods disabled. Choose Resume or Load Game, enter Live Mode, and check that the patched game itself runs. Custom Content will be absent during this check; that is expected.
- Exit without saving. Open the Live Mode menu at the top right, choose Exit Game, then confirm Exit Game. Do not choose Save and Exit or save the household while its Mods are disabled.
- Back up before making bigger changes. Close the game. In Documents > Electronic Arts, copy the entire The Sims 4 folder somewhere safe, such as the desktop, and rename the copy. It includes your Saves, Tray, and Mods folders. A backup is especially sensible before changing a heavily modded save.
- Clear the mod cache. Delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. The game rebuilds it. The first launch afterward may take longer as thumbnails are recreated. - Update mods and their required libraries. Check the creator’s own page for compatibility with your current game version. Update libraries before mods that depend on them, and remove outdated copies rather than leaving two versions in the folder. Some mods need a full reinstall, not an overwrite.
- Re-enable the settings and restart. Open Game Options > Other, tick Enable Custom Content and Mods, and tick Script Mods Allowed if any of your files are script mods. Choose Apply Changes, fully quit, and relaunch. Returning to the Main Menu is not a full restart.
- Check the startup list. After relaunch, the game may show a list of detected Mods. If it slows startup, untick Show at Startup at the bottom left of that pop-up.
EA’s post-update guidance follows the same core sequence: launch and check Live Mode with Mods off, exit without saving, then re-enable Mods and restart. EA also warns that outdated Mods can cause error 110 after an update; errors 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 can point to a script issue for which a script Mod may be responsible.

Why are my Sims 4 mods not showing up after an update?
Usually, the game has switched off its Mods settings on purpose, while the files remain in the Mods folder. Re-enable the two relevant options under Game Options > Other, apply the changes, and fully restart. If content is still missing, check the files and folder structure before assuming the patch deleted anything.
EA explains that it disables Mods during updates to limit gameplay issues. Its guidance also warns that saving before Mods are re-enabled may remove content from a saved game. This is why the vanilla check should be followed by an unsaved exit—not a saved session.
- Confirm the files are extracted. The game cannot load a mod left inside a
.zipor.rararchive. - Check the user-folder path. The usual location is Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods, not the game’s installation directory.
- Check script-mod depth. A
.ts4scriptfile should be in the Mods folder or one subfolder below it. A script nested deeper may not load. - Check package depth and configuration. Community guidance says package files can be nested up to five folders deep, and
Resource.cfgshould exist in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. A Mods folder without that configuration file may be ignored. - Look for sync or security interference. OneDrive folder syncing or antivirus software can sometimes interfere with Mods or prevent them from staying enabled; these are possible causes, not universal explanations.
Custom Content such as hair, clothes, and furniture can also fail after a patch, but gameplay Mods and scripts are generally more likely to cause problems. EA says many top crash reports remain closely linked to outdated or conflicting Mod files. The October 2026 update added code guardrails, but EA says some conflicts remain outside its control.

Enable Custom Content and Mods is the main switch turned off by an update. Script Mods Allowed is additionally required for script files, such as many UI changes, gameplay overhauls, and mods that use a script library. These are related but distinct: enabling Custom Content alone does not enable script Mods.
The Other tab also contains some optional settings that are not ordinarily reset by a patch:
- Online Social Features Access and Online Notifications: if you do not use the in-game Gallery or social features, turning these off may reduce background feeds and make menus feel snappier. Turn them back on when you want to share a build. These are optional preferences, not required post-patch fixes.
- Muscle and weight changes: the October 27, 2026 patch added separate Game Options to turn muscle changes and weight changes on or off across a save. The controls are independent: you can keep one active while disabling the other. They do not apply to cats, dogs, or horses.
Do not confuse those save-wide body-change controls with the patch’s per-Sim options. To change the setting for one active Sim, select that Sim and look under Sim Options… in the pie menu.

What changed in the October 2026 patch?
The October 27, 2026 update is the current worked example for this checklist. Its version numbers were PC 1.129.39.1030, Mac 1.129.39.1230, and Console 2.40. The same post-patch Mods procedure applies to future major updates, but newly changed menus and content may call for an additional check.

It also changed several areas that can look like a settings or Mod problem:
- Self-interactions moved. Previously uncategorized self-interactions now appear under Sim Options… when you select the actively played Sim. That menu includes options such as Sim Physique and preferences tied to specific packs, as well as the new per-Sim muscle and weight controls. If a self-interaction seems to have vanished, check this category before blaming a UI Mod.
- Food and drink tuning changed. The patch adjusted prices and calories across the base game and packs. A Mod that edits food or restaurant tuning may need an update.
- Restaurant tables may be affected. EA cautioned that the table-footprint fix could delete some tables in old builds, particularly tables placed using the Move Objects cheat. Back up before loading a restaurant save you cannot easily rebuild.
- More recipes enter the Family Recipes pool. The update added over 375 previously existing dishes to that pool for Businesses & Hobbies.
- Some saves and menus may look different. EA improved save-backup tracking, addressed an infinite white screen in certain affected saves, added TV locks by Sim category, moved Open to the front of the fridge pie menu, and added Quickly Decorate to certain baked goods. The fixed white-screen saves may still need some lot details rebuilt.
The update also added free Elder Create-a-Sim and Build Mode items to the base game. New catalog content is not a setting that needs resetting, but clearing the cache can help the game regenerate thumbnails.
How should you update Mods after a patch?
Update Mods by compatibility, not simply by how recently a file was downloaded. Start with script Mods and shared libraries, then check UI and gameplay Mods that touch systems changed by the patch. A stale library can make several otherwise-current Mods appear broken.
For the October 2026 patch, a SimsVIP list cited by Gaming Route had marked two Mods broken, two obsolete, and 63 updated as of October 29, 2026. That is a snapshot from a community-maintained list, not an EA compatibility guarantee. MC Command Center 2026.6.0 and MC Woohoo 2026.6.0 were listed as compatible with the PC and Mac 1.129 builds; players with 2026.5.0 were advised to replace it, not keep both versions. LittleMsSam’s Mods were listed as checked against 1.129.39. The status for other Mods can change, so verify on the creator’s own page before opening an important save.
Prioritize libraries such as XML Injector, Lot51 Core Library, and Danitysimmer Framework before dependent Mods. UI and pie-menu Mods deserve particular attention after a patch that adds a menu category. A Mod may load but still behave incorrectly if its creator has not updated it.

If the game still fails or a feature breaks after updating, use EA’s community 50/50 method. Remove gameplay Mods first, since EA says they are more likely than Custom Content to cause issues. Add a small batch back, launch, and repeat. If a batch triggers the problem, remove half of that batch and test again, narrowing down the cause. Keep Custom Content separate from gameplay Mods as you troubleshoot. When asking a creator for help, include the game version from the lower-left corner of the Main Menu.
Should you change Graphics settings after a patch?
Only revisit Graphics if the updated game now stutters, runs hot, or loads more slowly. Graphics settings are not part of the patch-reset Mods cluster, and a patch does not necessarily make them wrong. New packs, detailed lots, and Mods or Custom Content can make a previously comfortable preset feel heavier.
For a performance-first adjustment, lower the settings with the largest likely cost before changing everything at once:

- 3D Scene Resolution: reduce this first if the game struggles; community graphics guidance describes it as the biggest single setting on most PCs. Medium can look close to High on a laptop screen.
- Edge Smoothing: try Off or Low if frame rate is the priority; the visual gain may be small compared with its cost.
- View Distance: Medium or Low can help on object-heavy neighboring lots.
- Lighting and Reflections: Medium is a compromise on lots with many lamps or mirrors.
- Uncompressed Sim Textures: leave it unticked unless the graphics card has plenty of video memory.
- Laptop Mode: consider it for a laptop that gets hot; it reduces several effects at once.
- Display Type: Windowed Fullscreen can make switching to other apps easier and may reduce stutters on some systems.
- Vertical Sync: consider it if menus run at extremely high frame rates and the fans become noisy; it can cap output to the monitor refresh rate.
- DirectX 9: leave it unticked unless the graphics card cannot run DirectX 11.
Change one or two settings at a time and check the same kind of lot or situation. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change helped. If performance remains poor, update the graphics driver from the GPU maker or laptop maker, make sure a dual-GPU laptop is using its high-performance graphics option for TS4_x64.exe, and connect the laptop to AC power. Those are Windows and hardware settings, not Sims options. After a Windows or driver update, check the preferred GPU again because that preference can reset.
Do you need to turn on Memory Boost?
No. The available community documentation says that since the July 21, 2026 update, Memory Boost is always on and its options-menu toggle has been removed. Older advice to enable a Memory Boost checkbox is stale; there is no checkbox to hunt for after a patch. Treat this as a community-documented change rather than a current EA setting you need to manage.
Another setting that can be mistaken for a patch fix is Max Sim Count in Household Manager. Community guidance reports EA’s default recommendation is 80 for most players; 150 may suit mid-range or high-end PCs, while 200 and Unlimited are available but not recommended by EA. This is a save-level population preference, not a switch a major patch normally resets. Older saves can accumulate townies, so changing it is a deliberate simulation or performance choice, not a first-line Mods repair.

Can you delay the next Sims 4 update?
You cannot use launcher settings to undo a patch that is already installed, but you can change when the next update downloads. That can give Mod creators time to publish compatible files, although delaying an update also means staying on the current build until you choose to update.
- EA app on PC: open the three-line menu > Application settings > Download > Updates, then turn off Update games automatically. You can also turn off Enable background downloads.
- EA app on Mac: open the EA app menu next to the Apple symbol > Settings, then find the same Download and Updates controls.
- Steam: in Downloads by default, or in The Sims 4’s Properties, set updates to wait until the game is launched. This delays an update until launch; it does not freeze the game on an old version indefinitely. Steam copies still require the EA app.
EA app offline mode is not a dependable patch-blocking setting. EA describes it for games launched online before and allows up to 30 days after the last online launch; the app goes online again the next time it opens. Player reports also say an update can sometimes proceed even when automatic updates are off, so check the launcher before starting a modded session.

If the unmodded Live Mode check already fails, focus on the installation rather than the Mods checkboxes. Close the game and use the launcher’s repair tool; back up your user folder first if you are unsure.
- EA app: open The Sims 4 page, choose Manage, then Repair.
- Steam: open the game’s Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Repairing or verifying game files does not remove the Mods folder, according to EA Forums guidance, but keeping a backup is still prudent. Do not delete Saves, Tray, or Mods as a routine cache-clearing step. If you need a full folder reset as a diagnostic, treat it as a separate last-resort procedure, not as a normal post-patch setting change.
For more focused troubleshooting, inspect lastException.txt in Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4; use the unnumbered file, since numbered copies are older. A lastUIException can point toward a UI Mod. These logs can provide clues, but a conflict detector cannot reliably determine whether a file is simply outdated.

PlayStation and Xbox do not support downloadable Mods or the PC/Mac Mods checkboxes, so console players can skip the Mods re-enable process. Console players still receive the game’s new gameplay options, menu changes, and fixes. For a console cache clear, the cited guidance is a full power-off followed by unplugging the console for 60 seconds; this clears system cache, not the PC/Mac localthumbcache.package file.

The central post-patch distinction is simple: restore only settings that actually changed, and troubleshoot the game before risking a modded save. Check vanilla Live Mode, exit without saving, clear the cache, update the files, enable Mods under Other, and restart. Adjust Graphics or launcher preferences only when there is a specific performance or update-timing reason.
