Short answer: SIMA (Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent) is a Google DeepMind research project that follows natural-language instructions in interactive 3D worlds. It sees rendered images and acts through ordinary keyboard-and-mouse controls. SIMA is not a downloadable game bot, consumer assistant, public API, or proof that artificial general intelligence has been achieved.

What SIMA stands for

SIMA means Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent. The name describes the research objective: an agent that can understand instructions and transfer useful behavior among many virtual environments instead of being engineered for one game. Google DeepMind introduced the first SIMA on March 13, 2024.

“Generalist” here means broad coverage within interactive 3D environments. It does not mean human-level intelligence across every domain. SIMA remains dependent on visual observations, available controls, training data, task design, latency and the mechanics of each environment.

Google DeepMind presents SIMA as research toward more capable embodied agents, not as an achieved AGI system. See the original announcement at Google DeepMind and the technical paper at arXiv.

How the original SIMA works

SIMA 1 uses a deliberately general interface rather than a game-specific integration.

  1. It receives a natural-language instruction.
  2. It observes the world through rendered visual input.
  3. It interprets the scene and the requested objective.
  4. It selects keyboard-and-mouse actions such as movement, camera control or object interaction.
  5. It repeats that loop while attempting to complete the task.

The approach is designed around what a player can see and do, rather than privileged access to source code, hidden game state or a bespoke game API. That does not mean every experiment excludes all auxiliary infrastructure; it means the central agent interface is visual observation plus ordinary controls.

Training and evaluation

Human-player demonstrations supplied examples of language-grounded behavior across varied environments. Evaluations examined instruction following and transfer between selected commercial and research worlds, including environments unlike those used for some training. This is evidence of cross-environment generalization, not a universal success rate.

What “more than 600 skills” means

Google DeepMind’s later SIMA 2 announcement describes the original work as covering more than 600 basic language-following skills. These are skills such as turning, climbing, opening a map, navigating or interacting with an object—not 600 complete games, independent worlds or long campaigns.

What SIMA 2 changes

Announced on November 13, 2025, SIMA 2 is described as a Gemini-powered successor. Google DeepMind reports a broader agent that can reason about higher-level goals, converse while acting, interpret language and images, operate in previously unseen virtual environments and learn new skills through experience and generated tasks.

  • Higher-level objectives: It is intended to handle more than isolated button-level commands.
  • Conversation: A user can interact with the agent while it works.
  • Multimodal instructions: Images can supplement language and visual scene observations.
  • Generalization: The research targets useful behavior in unfamiliar evaluated worlds.
  • Skill acquisition: The technical report describes Gemini-generated tasks and rewards that help train new abilities.

“Self-improvement” should be read narrowly. The reported process still depends on model architecture, generated tasks, reward design, environment construction, training infrastructure and evaluation. It is not unrestricted autonomous improvement. Details are in the SIMA 2 announcement and technical report.

SIMA, SIMA 2, Genie and Gemini agents compared

System Main role Typical input Output
SIMA Acts in existing virtual environments Rendered images and natural-language instructions Keyboard-and-mouse actions
SIMA 2 Reasons, converses and learns while acting in virtual worlds Language, images and visual observations Actions and interaction
Genie/Genie 3 Generates or models interactive worlds Text or image prompts Simulated 3D environments
Gemini API agents Performs developer-defined software tasks Tools, files, code and web inputs Code, browsing, files and tool calls

Genie supplies an environment; SIMA is the agent operating inside one. Genie 3 has been used to create real-time worlds for testing SIMA agents, but the systems have different jobs. Google’s separate Gemini API agent capabilities are not public access to SIMA.

The research loop with Genie

  1. Generate a virtual world.
  2. Define tasks in that world.
  3. Have an agent attempt them.
  4. Evaluate outcomes and failures.
  5. Use the resulting experience to improve training.

This is a promising research direction for increasing the supply of interactive training environments. Generated worlds can also contain inconsistent geometry, physics or task logic, so success in simulation does not establish reliable real-world behavior. Learn more on the Genie page and in the Genie 3 announcement.

Why games matter to embodied-AI research

Games provide repeatable environments, explicit objectives, rich visual interaction and measurable outcomes at far lower safety and hardware cost than physical robots. Researchers can vary tasks and worlds systematically while studying perception, planning, cooperation and action.

Those advantages come with a boundary: games simplify physics, sensors, social behavior and consequences. A successful virtual action is therefore evidence about digital embodied interaction, not a demonstration that the same policy is ready for a household robot.

What SIMA can and cannot establish

What the work demonstrates

  • Language can be grounded in visual observations and ordinary controls.
  • One research agent can cover multiple selected 3D environments.
  • Some behaviors can transfer beyond the exact worlds used for training.
  • Generated environments may help create additional tasks for agent learning.

What remains unestablished publicly

  • A universal success rate across games.
  • Reliable completion of long, open-ended campaigns.
  • Human-level performance in arbitrary environments.
  • A benchmark directly comparing SIMA with every modern computer-use agent.
  • Production deployment, public inference pricing or API quotas.

Practical limitations and likely failure cases

Visual control is flexible but difficult. Camera orientation changes what the agent can perceive, small visual changes can alter action selection, and precise timing is hard. Menus, dialogue, inventory systems, cluttered interfaces and unfamiliar mechanics add additional state that may not be obvious from pixels.

  • Ambiguous instructions: Several actions may satisfy the wording, or the intended objective may not be visually represented.
  • Unhelpful viewpoints: The agent may need to reposition the camera before it can identify an object.
  • Stuck behavior: Collision geometry or an obstacle can trap movement.
  • Rare mechanics: An unfamiliar item, tool or interface can require skills absent from training.
  • Long memory: Multi-stage tasks may require remembering an earlier decision for minutes or hours.
  • Changing conditions: Adversarial events, non-player characters or rapidly changing worlds can invalidate a plan.
  • Generated-world defects: Inconsistent geometry or physics can make a task impossible for reasons unrelated to planning.

These are practical limitations and open evaluation questions, not published SIMA-specific failure rates.

How to judge SIMA’s significance

Look beyond a striking gameplay video. The important questions are:

  1. Environment breadth: Does performance hold across substantially different mechanics and layouts?
  2. Skill transfer: How much retraining is needed for each new world?
  3. Interface generality: Does the agent rely on visual input and ordinary controls rather than privileged state?
  4. Instruction complexity: Can it pursue and recover from multi-step goals?
  5. Long-horizon reliability: Can it maintain a goal as conditions change?
  6. Unseen-world performance: Does it act meaningfully in environments absent from training?
  7. Learning efficiency: How much demonstration, generated data or environment-specific tuning is required?
  8. Safety and control: Can operators interrupt, constrain and inspect its actions?

A generalist may be more flexible than a specialized bot while achieving lower peak performance in one game. Breadth and maximum skill are different measures.

Can the public try SIMA?

As of August 18, 2026, the cited official material does not establish a public SIMA signup, consumer download, general-purpose SIMA API or commercial pricing for the agent. SIMA remains a research project demonstrated through papers, technical reports and selected environments.

Project Genie is an adjacent experiment based on Genie 3. Google announced availability to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States on January 29, 2026, but Project Genie is primarily an interactive-world generation and exploration experience—not a public SIMA interface. See Google’s announcement.

If your goal is web, desktop, file or code automation, Gemini API agents are the relevant developer product. If your goal is one-game performance, a specialized game bot or reinforcement-learning system is usually a better fit. Neither option should be marketed as SIMA.

Why SIMA matters—and why it is not AGI

SIMA’s significance lies in connecting language, visual perception, planning and action through a common interface across multiple worlds. That is a meaningful step toward transferable embodied agents: systems that can be instructed instead of rebuilt for every environment.

It is still a bounded research result. Virtual-world competence does not automatically transfer to physical robotics, and “generalist” does not mean general-purpose intelligence. The strongest current conclusion is that SIMA is an important research platform for studying cross-environment instruction following, not a finished product or an AGI milestone.
