Silent Hill: Townfall’s stealth is a central part of its horror, but it does not make the game stealth-only. Konami and PlayStation describe a deliberate balance: avoid danger when you can, confront it when you must. The first-person perspective and CRTV make that choice tense and sometimes imperfectly readable. Reviews consulted praise the atmosphere and the way the CRTV supports investigation, while also pointing to enemy-tracking limits and challenging puzzles. Townfall looks compelling for players who enjoy uncertainty and careful exploration; the evidence does not support calling it a universal horror “masterclass.”

What is Silent Hill: Townfall?

Released September 24, 2026, SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length survival-horror game developed by Scotland-based Screen Burn Interactive and co-published by Annapurna Interactive and Konami. It is available for PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, according to Konami’s launch announcement. Konami describes it as the series’ first full-length entry presented entirely from a first-person perspective.

You play Simon Ordell, who returns to the remote fictional island town of St. Amelia, off the coast of Scotland. PlayStation’s product description frames his purpose as putting things right while he follows fragments of clues and connections to the town’s former inhabitants.

What does the CRTV do?

The CRTV is a handheld pocket television that takes the familiar role of a threat-warning device and makes it visual as well as audible. PlayStation’s product page says it can tune into unstable analog signals to detect nearby threats, reveal narrative clues, and help solve puzzles. In practice, it makes information gathering part of movement: you scan and interpret signals while deciding how to proceed, rather than relying on a single warning sound.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That design is closely tied to the viewpoint. In a PlayStation Blog interview, Screen Burn writer and director Jon McKellan said, “Honestly, the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.” The tool’s promise is that it links navigation, puzzle-solving, and danger awareness; its drawback, as discussed below, is that the information it gives can be incomplete.

Is Townfall mostly stealth?

Stealth is a major pillar, but the official description does not present hiding as the only option. PlayStation says players should avoid danger where possible and confront it when necessary. A pre-release PlayStation hands-on account describes practical ways to slip past enemies: throw bottles or bricks to distract them, or use nearby radios and televisions to draw attention elsewhere.

That makes the central loop less “never fight” than “decide whether a fight is worth the risk.” The narrower field of view and emphasis on listening make encounters feel immediate, while the CRTV offers a way to gather information before committing. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer likened the repeated threat-scanning rhythm to Alien: Isolation; that comparison reflects one reviewer’s experience, not a measured consensus.

Can you fight the monsters, or do you have to hide?

You can fight when needed; the official framing explicitly includes confrontation as well as evasion. The balance appears to reward restraint, though. PC Gamer’s reviewer, writing about a roughly 13-hour PC playthrough on normal difficulty, said they often avoided using weapons. El País’ October 5, 2026 opinion review similarly interpreted the game as favoring flight and infiltration, with vulnerability itself contributing to the horror.

Those are individual assessments, not evidence that every encounter forces the same tactic or that combat is ineffective. A PC Gamer feature by Elie Gould describes a first playthrough shaped by stealth and a changed approach after finding a shotgun; it is a spoiler-warning first-person account, rather than a systematic comparison of combat strategies.

Does stealth make the horror tense or frustrating?

The same uncertainty that builds tension can make threat information harder to use. PC Gamer’s reviewer praised the CRTV as a useful puzzle and navigation tool, but said its enemy-position information could be imprecise about distance and could not show several enemies on one frequency at once. That is a specific limitation reported in a PC playthrough, not proof that every encounter is unclear.

Critical reactions emphasize different sides of that trade-off. Tom’s Guide strongly praised the perspective, story, setting, and encounters. PC Gamer also praised the town and CRTV, while noting the tracking limitation. El País’ opinion piece foregrounded difficult puzzles and the player’s vulnerability. Together, those reactions support a game with a strong, coherent tension-building concept—not a claim that the stealth works perfectly for every player.

How do the story, puzzles, and setting fit together?

St. Amelia is presented as a remote Scottish town marked by fog, silence, and fractured memory. PlayStation’s developer-authored feature says the aim was to make it feel recently lived in and shaped by its own trauma, rather than merely abandoned. The team also described Scotland’s fog as a natural fit for the series’ atmosphere.

The developers’ stated approach is tension and escalating uncertainty rather than relying mainly on jump scares and gore. Puzzle-solving supports that approach: official materials describe clues and narrative fragments as intertwined, so investigation is part of how the story unfolds. Reviews praise the setting and investigative texture, but puzzle difficulty is a notable caveat. PC Gamer’s reviewer described a late-game puzzle that took effort, while El País’ opinion review also highlighted demanding puzzles. Players who enjoy piecing together clues may find that friction purposeful; those who want clearer guidance may find it a barrier.

Is Silent Hill: Townfall worth playing?

Townfall is the stronger fit for players who want first-person psychological horror built around scanning, listening, cautious movement, and environmental investigation. Its CRTV gives those activities a distinctive shared tool, and the reviewers consulted found real strengths in the atmosphere and encounter design.

It is a less certain recommendation for anyone who wants combat to dominate, prefers consistently precise enemy tracking, or dislikes challenging puzzles. The available reviews are selected critical perspectives, not an exhaustive score survey, so they do not establish a universal verdict or aggregate rating. The fairest conclusion is that Townfall’s stealth supports its horror more often than it displaces it—but its information limits and puzzle demands may be decisive for some players.
