That extra detail gives the fp L more room for large prints and cropping, while both cameras share the same listed internal UHD 4K frame rates and core recording formats. Sigma also describes the fp L as having phase-detection autofocus and the fp as offering Dual Base ISO. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent performance tests.

Which camera is better for still photography?
Choose the fp L for resolution and in-camera cropping
The fp L’s approximately 61.4MP sensor records substantially more pixel data than the fp’s approximately 24.6MP sensor. That can help when you need to crop a frame, recompose after shooting, or prepare a large output. Sigma lists crop zoom from approximately 1.5x to 5x on the fp L, compared with approximately 1.5x on the fp, and says the higher pixel count enables that added crop range.
More pixels are not automatically better for every photographer. If your usual output does not require the extra resolution or crop flexibility, the fp’s lower-resolution files may be a more suitable fit for your workflow. Sigma’s specifications alone do not establish that either camera produces better image quality in all situations.

Consider autofocus needs separately
Sigma describes the fp as using contrast-detection autofocus and the fp L as combining contrast and phase detection. The company highlights phase-detection AF and tracking as fp L strengths. That makes the fp L the more relevant specification choice if autofocus tracking is a priority, but the cited manufacturer materials do not provide an independent head-to-head test of focus speed or reliability.
What changes for video?
Internal recording: shared listed frame rates
Sigma lists the same principal internal recording options for both models: CinemaDNG (8-, 10-, or 12-bit) and H.264 MOV, with UHD 4K and FHD recording. Both are listed for internal UHD 4K at 23.98p, 24p, 25p, and 29.97p. For FHD, both list 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, 48p, 50p, 59.94p, 100p, and 119.88p. The catalog does not show an internal UHD 4K frame-rate advantage for either model.

External recording: check the complete setup
Sigma lists external 4:2:2 8-bit and 12-bit RAW recording with supported recorders. Its catalog specifies DCI 4K/24p for RAW output. Sigma’s filmmaking page names ATOMOS Ninja V and Blackmagic Video Assist 12G and gives recorder firmware requirements. Check that page and the recorder maker’s current documentation for the exact camera, recorder, output mode, and firmware combination before building a rig; external recording adds equipment and compatibility requirements.
Different manufacturer-stated strengths
Sigma describes Dual Base ISO as an fp feature, while its fp-series filmmaking page lists 12.5 stops for the fp and 13 stops for the fp L. It presents phase-difference autofocus as an fp L distinction. Treat those as Sigma’s stated features and figures, not as independently measured proof that one camera is superior in every lighting or video scenario.

Size, mount, and practical ownership
The bodies have the same listed dimensions, 112.6 × 69.9 × 45.3 mm. Sigma gives body-only weights of 370 g for the fp and 375 g for the fp L, a 5 g difference. Both use L-Mount. Sigma says compatible L-Mount Alliance lenses from Leica and Panasonic can also be used with the fp series; confirm support for the specific lens and features you need rather than assuming every function is identical across lenses.
Sigma’s fp L product page labels the camera “DISCONTINUED.” That status does not establish whether a particular retailer has new or used stock, or what condition or price to expect. Check the seller’s current listing and verify the camera’s condition, included accessories, and return terms.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the fp L if still resolution, substantial cropping, or Sigma’s stated phase-detection AF feature is central to your needs—and you can find a suitable unit.
- Choose the fp if approximately 24.6MP is enough for your stills and the shared listed internal UHD 4K and FHD frame rates meet your video requirements.
- For a video-first decision, compare the recording mode you actually need, including whether internal recording is sufficient or an external RAW workflow is worth the extra equipment and compatibility checks.
Both cameras share the same L-Mount system and listed internal UHD 4K rates. The decisive distinction is what you need beyond that baseline: the fp L’s resolution and crop range, or the fp’s lower-resolution sensor alongside Sigma’s stated Dual Base ISO feature. The official specifications do not establish a universal winner.
