How do Sifu and Absolver differ?
| Decision | Sifu | Absolver |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | Designed as a single-player game; PlayStation lists the PS4/PS5 version for one player with offline play enabled. PlayStation | Its official description centers on encounters with other players that may lead to PvP or PvE. That description does not establish current matchmaking activity. Absolver official site |
| Combat customization | Learn timing, defensive options, Focus attacks, Structure management, and unlockable skills; use positioning and objects in fights. Sifu official site | Build a personal fighting style by choosing a type, mastering a weapon, learning moves, and assembling combos with the Combat Deck. Absolver official site |
| Fight emphasis | Demanding encounters include groups of enemies, target switching, positioning, and environmental objects. Sifu official site | The official pitch emphasizes tactical real-time duels and battles using attacks, dodges, parries, and stance mastery. Absolver official site |
| Progression and replay | Death ages the protagonist; unlockable abilities and the Arenas expansion’s challenges provide ways to keep practicing. PlayStation Sifu official site | Progression includes learning moves and shaping a Combat Deck. The official description does not establish current population or online-service conditions. Absolver official site |
| Story framing | A young kung-fu student pursues the assassins who murdered their family. PlayStation | The official page frames players as Prospects in a world of encounters and choices that can steer toward PvP or PvE; it does not establish a conventional campaign structure. Should you buy Absolver if you loved Sifu?
Possibly—but expect a different kind of game. Sloclap described Sifu as building on its martial-arts work with Absolver while focusing this time on a single-player experience. That connection helps explain the shared interest in tactical martial-arts combat, but it does not make the games mechanically identical. Sloclap’s Sifu site

- Sifu is the closer fit if what you loved was a focused solo challenge, a cinematic revenge setup, fights against groups, and a clear practice loop.
- Absolver is the better fit if you want to assemble a fighting style from moves and are interested in the possibility of human-versus-human encounters.
The choice is less about which game is categorically better and more about whether you want a directed solo experience or a player-built combat system with social encounters.
What does Sifu’s death-and-aging loop involve?
In Sifu, death revives the protagonist at an aging cost. The pendant’s effect makes mistakes consequential without ending the run immediately: you continue, but the character grows older. The game’s official descriptions establish that mechanic; they do not provide a comparative completion-time statistic. PlayStation Microids

- Your enemies don’t wait their turn, and they don’t broadcast their intent. Dodge, parry, strike, use combos and be like water making its way through captivating environments. Learn how to master your art, whether by fighting through the underbelly of a nightclub, scrambling through a refined gallery to avoid getting surrounded, or vertically navigating a towering office building.

- Kung Fu is mastery through practice, a path for both the body and the mind. Learn from your errors, unlock unique skills, and find the strength to master the devastating techniques of Pak Mei Kung Fu.
Combat practice involves more than attacking. Sifu’s official combat explanation covers blocking, dodging, parrying, avoiding, Focus attacks, managing Structure, unlocking skills, and using environmental objects. The Structure system is intended to model breaking an opponent’s stance and ability to attack or defend. Sifu official site
Sifu also has the Arenas expansion: Sloclap lists five modes, nine locations, and 45 challenges. Its site marks the final content update as released on September 7, 2023; it does not state a separate publication date for those figures. Sifu official site

What makes Absolver’s combat distinct?
Absolver’s signature is the Combat Deck: you learn moves and assemble them into combos, shaping a personal fighting style. The official description also calls out choosing a type and mastering a weapon. That gives customization a central role in the game’s pitch, rather than presenting combat mainly as a fixed set of techniques to learn. Absolver official site
The same official page describes encounters with other players that may become PvP or PvE. That is evidence of the game’s advertised design, not proof that matchmaking is currently active, populated, or available on every platform.

What should you check before choosing?
- If online play is essential: verify Absolver’s current availability on your platform, service status, and matchmaking before buying. The official page reviewed here does not give current server or player-count data.
- If platform or price decides it: check the relevant store at the time of purchase. PlayStation’s listed prices are volatile and do not provide a cross-platform comparison. PlayStation
- If you want a solo game you can play offline: PlayStation identifies its PS4/PS5 Sifu listing as one player with offline play enabled. This is specific to that listing, not a platform-by-platform statement about every edition. PlayStation
