Based in Reading, England, the venture was reported as 51% owned by Siemens and 49% by NEC. Its intended platform would support both UMTS radio modes, TDD and FDD; the companies planned to keep mobile-terminal development separate.
What was Mobisphere?
Mobisphere was the name of the Siemens–NEC joint venture announced at its November 1999 launch. Its focus was the radio infrastructure used by mobile operators to build UMTS networks, rather than consumer handsets. The launch report said the venture would develop a common platform and that equipment would be sold under a common product name through the companies’ separate sales forces. EE Times, November 1999
The earlier March memorandum described a broader set of radio-subsystem products: base stations, base-station controllers, and operations and maintenance centers. That was the initial plan, not a separate consumer product line. EE Times, March 1999
How the March plan differed from the November launch
| Detail | March 1999 memorandum | November 1999 launch |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Memorandum of understanding to form a venture | Mobisphere Ltd. announced |
| Ownership | Equal capital contributions were proposed; final ownership was not stated in the March report | Siemens 51%; NEC 49% |
| Capital | Expected capital influx of about $17.24 million, split evenly | $10 million initial capitalization |
| Location | Still being worked out | Reading, England |
The figures describe different stages and should not be combined: the approximately $17.24 million was an expectation reported with the March memorandum, while $10 million and the 51/49 ownership split were reported at launch. The March report also expected the venture to become fully operational later in 1999. EE Times, March 1999 EE Times, November 1999

Why support both TDD and FDD?
UMTS used two radio-access modes: time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD). The launch coverage presented Siemens’ experience with TDD and NEC’s with FDD as complementary, giving the venture a reason to develop a common infrastructure platform covering both. The announcement establishes the intended scope, not measured performance or proof that every product supported both modes in every deployment. EE Times, November 1999
Siemens management-board member Volker Jung described the alliance as positioning the companies to support both modes from commercial launch. That was Jung’s characterization of the companies’ competitive position, not independent verification that no other supplier could do so. EE Times, November 1999

- 【3G network Dual Micro SIM Card】: This is a 3G network mobile phone. The network frequency band supported by the mobile phone is 3G:B1/B5/B2/B8. Please ask your carrier before purchasing whether it supports it, otherwise it may not be used. For example, Verizon users may not be able to use it. The phone cannot support 4G and 5G networks (the SIM card not included in the package).
- 【6.67" HD Screen Android Phone】: This phone features a 6.67-inch display with a resolution of 576×1280, providing a clear and comfortable viewing experience for daily use. The unlocked smartphone is about 0.34 inches thick, providing you with an excellent grip feel. eSIM is not supported on this model.
- 【RAM 2GB + ROM 16GB】: Please note that this phone does not support SD card expansion. With 2GB of RAM, it can only handle 2–3 apps running simultaneously — opening more may cause lag. The phone comes with 16GB of built-in storage, but the system reserves a portion of it, so the actual available space on your unlocked phone will be less than 16GB. Due to the limited memory, some memory-intensive apps like TikTok may not function properly.
- 【3000mAh Battery But No Fast Charging】 : This mobile phone is equipped with a 3000mAh battery. Due to the long transportation time, the battery may run out. Please charge the phone for more than 1 hour after receiving it. The mobile phone uses a type-C interface, but due to the inability to charge quickly, it takes about 2 hours to fully charge
- 【Two cameras:】: This unlocked smartphone is equipped with a rear 16MP main camera and a 2MP front camera, making it a great expert at recording beautiful moments in life. This product is suitable for novice users and not for experienced players
What later activity is documented?
Fiscal 2002
Siemens reported involvement in 18 contracted 3G network projects with Mobisphere support in its fiscal 2002 filing. This is a company-reported project count for that fiscal year, not a current market statistic. Siemens AG, fiscal 2002 annual report
Fiscal 2004
In its fiscal 2004 filing, Siemens said it had been awarded 30 commercial contracts for 3G network projects and described continuing W-CDMA infrastructure rollouts in Europe and Asia. This later company-reported contract figure does not by itself establish how many contracts Mobisphere directly executed. Siemens AG, fiscal 2004 annual report

2007 cooperation
A 2007 Nokia Siemens Networks–NEC announcement described their WCDMA collaboration as a continuation of earlier Siemens–NEC work carried out through Mobisphere. It supports continuity of the technical cooperation, but does not establish Mobisphere’s legal dissolution date or a complete succession history for its assets and entity. The November report said Mobisphere equipment was expected to reach the market by the end of 2000. Jung also forecast a 20% share of an equipment market valued at about $7.5 billion by 2004. These were forward-looking expectations made at launch, not evidence that the delivery date or market-share target was achieved. EE Times, November 1999
