If you want to try a lighter-feeling alternative to Windows, start with Linux Mint Xfce, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. They use desktop environments their projects describe as lightweight, but there is no matched-hardware test here to rank them by speed—and installing Linux cannot guarantee that a particular laptop will run faster. The right choice depends on your hardware, the applications and devices you need, and what is actually slowing Windows down.
Which lightweight Linux distros are worth trying?
These three are reasonable candidates because their official project documentation describes lightweight goals or desktops. That is useful for shortlisting, not proof that one will outperform another on your computer.
Linux Mint Xfce
Linux Mint’s download page lists version 22.3, “Zena,” and describes Xfce as a lightweight desktop that uses fewer resources than Cinnamon, with fewer features. Those are Linux Mint’s descriptions, not results from a comparative benchmark. Linux Mint announced version 22.3 on January 13, 2026, and says it is supported until 2029. The published Linux Mint requirements are 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of disk space minimum; the project recommends 4 GB of RAM for comfortable use and 100 GB of disk space. These figures apply to Linux Mint generally; the project does not publish separate lower requirements for its Xfce edition. Linux Mint downloads · Linux Mint 22.3 announcement
Xubuntu
Xubuntu uses Xfce, which its documentation describes as configurable and light on resources. Its official download page lists a minimum 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 1 GB of memory, and 8.6 GB of free disk space. For a smoother experience with multiple applications, it recommends a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB of memory, and 20 GB of disk space. The page also says you can try Xubuntu from a USB drive or DVD before installing it. Xubuntu downloads and requirements · Xubuntu documentation

Lubuntu
Lubuntu’s manual describes its aim as providing a lightweight but functional distribution based on Ubuntu. It uses LXQt alongside other packages maintained by the Lubuntu team, and its project describes a modern graphical interface with applications for browsing, email, chat, entertainment, and productivity. The manual identifies Lubuntu as an official member of the Ubuntu family. No current, release-specific minimum hardware requirements or support end date are established in the cited manual, so do not compare it using older figures or assume another Ubuntu flavor’s requirements apply. How do their published requirements compare?
Published minimums and recommendations are useful for checking whether a system is in the right general range. They are not a head-to-head performance test, and the figures are not perfectly equivalent: Linux Mint’s figures apply generally rather than specifically to Xfce, while Lubuntu’s current release-specific figures are not stated in the cited manual.

Which one is easiest for a Windows user?
There is no universal answer: familiarity depends on your habits and the applications you use. Linux Mint Xfce and Xubuntu both use Xfce, while Lubuntu uses LXQt. Consider the desktop descriptions and try the system if the project provides a suitable way to do so. Xubuntu’s download page specifically confirms a USB or DVD trial; check the current official installation instructions for Mint or Lubuntu rather than assuming they offer the same process.
Also check whether your essential Windows programs have a Linux version or a web-based alternative before choosing a distribution. A desktop that feels familiar is not a substitute for a workable replacement for software you depend on.

Can you try Linux without installing it?
Xubuntu’s official download page says you can run it from a USB drive or DVD before installing. Use a separate USB flash drive for bootable installation media, and follow Xubuntu’s current instructions to prepare and start it. A live session lets you check whether the system starts and whether key hardware works before replacing Windows; it does not guarantee every component will behave exactly as it would after installation.
During the trial, check Wi-Fi, sound, graphics, sleep and wake, printer, webcam, and external monitor support. A problem with a device or application you must use may matter more than a small difference in published memory requirements.

What should you check before replacing Windows?
- Back up your personal files separately. Do not treat a distribution installer or a live session as a backup.
- Record your laptop’s hardware and boot details. Note the model, processor, RAM, storage, and whether it boots in UEFI mode.
- Check essential software and devices. Identify Linux or web alternatives for must-have applications, then test important hardware in a live session where available.
- Use the chosen distribution’s current official installation guide. Confirm the steps for your system and follow the distribution’s official instructions for verifying the downloaded image before installation.
Do not assume that “Windows bloat” points to one cause. Unwanted startup software, limited RAM, a failing hard drive, or an unsupported Windows version call for different remedies. A new operating system may be worth evaluating, but the available project documentation does not establish that switching will fix a specific slowdown.

- Consider Linux Mint Xfce if you want Mint with the Xfce desktop and its published general requirements fit your system.
- Consider Xubuntu if you want an Xfce option with clearly published minimum and recommended hardware figures and a documented USB or DVD trial.
- Consider Lubuntu if you want to explore the LXQt desktop and Lubuntu’s lightweight, Ubuntu-based approach; consult its current release documentation for requirements and support details before committing.
Choose by checking the specific release, your hardware, and the applications and devices you need—not by treating “lightweight” as a promise of a particular speed gain.
