This guide covers the Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2, introduced in 2023; the original AONIC 50 is a different generation with different features. The Gen 2’s strongest case is its sound quality, adjustable EQ and long manufacturer-rated battery life. Its main trade-offs are noise cancellation that reviewers say trails leading travel headphones, mixed comfort feedback and at least one review’s criticism of microphone quality.

Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2 pros and cons at a glance

Pros Cons
  • Reviewers praise its detailed, high-quality sound.
  • Parametric EQ in the ShurePlus PLAY app lets you adjust the sound profile.
  • Shure rates battery life at up to 45 hours and claims up to five hours of use from a 15-minute charge.
  • Multiple ANC modes, spatial audio options, Environment Mode and a broad codec list.
  • Includes a zippered carry case, detachable USB-C cable and 3.5 mm analog cable.
  • Reviewers find its ANC less effective than leading Bose and Sony alternatives.
  • Tom’s Guide criticizes the microphone despite Shure’s beamforming and six-microphone design.
  • Comfort is not universal, and the 334 g headset is not especially light.
  • Tom’s Guide lists no weatherproofing, so it is not a safe pick for rain or sweaty workouts.

What are the Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2’s main advantages?

Strong sound with useful EQ controls

Sound is the clearest reason to consider the AONIC 50 Gen 2. Tom’s Guide describes its audio quality as excellent, and other review coverage also identifies sound as a major strength. The ShurePlus PLAY app offers parametric EQ, giving listeners control to tailor the profile rather than requiring them to accept the default tuning. EQ flexibility is useful, but it does not mean every listener will prefer the headphones’ factory sound.

Shure also offers three spatial audio modes—Music, Cinema and Podcast—along with Environment Mode for hearing more of your surroundings. The usefulness of spatial processing is a matter of preference; treat it as an additional listening option, not a guarantee of better sound for every recording.

Long manufacturer-rated battery life

Shure rates the Gen 2 for up to 45 hours of battery life and says a 15-minute quick charge provides up to five hours of use. These are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed runtime figures for every listener: codec, volume, settings and usage can affect actual battery life. See Shure’s Gen 2 announcement and user guide for the stated figures.

Flexible wireless and wired listening

The Gen 2 supports Bluetooth codecs including aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Voice, SBC, AAC and LDAC, according to Shure’s user guide. Which codec is actually used depends on the source device and playback setup; the presence of a codec on the headphone does not mean every phone or computer can use it. A detachable USB-C cable and a 3.5 mm analog cable are included for wired connections, as is a zippered carry case.

Premium build

Tom’s Guide praises the build quality. Shure’s launch materials list 50 mm dynamic drivers, Bluetooth 5 and a two-year warranty. Sean Sullivan, Shure’s Associate Director of Global Product Management, described the Gen 2 as designed to deliver an exceptional listening experience built on the previous generation’s heritage; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, rather than an independent assessment.

What are the main disadvantages?

Noise cancellation is not a leading strength

Shure says the Gen 2 improves ANC over the first generation and provides four selectable modes: Light, Moderate, Max and MaxAware. However, review judgments suggest the improvement does not make it a top choice for blocking transport noise. RTINGS says its ANC remains behind the Bose QuietComfort and Sony WH-1000XM5 comparison models, while Tom’s Guide is more critical and calls the ANC poor. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a universal measurement of every environment.

If strong isolation on aircraft, trains or other noisy commutes is your top priority, compare current alternatives specifically for ANC performance rather than assuming the AONIC 50’s multiple modes make it category-leading.

Microphone quality has drawn criticism

Shure advertises six microphones with beamforming, but Tom’s Guide criticizes the microphone quality. The hardware description alone does not establish how calls will sound in practice. If you regularly take important calls in noisy places, seek call samples or reviews that reflect your own conditions before choosing these headphones.

Fit and weight may not suit everyone

SoundGuys reports a positive experience during long listening sessions but notes that some colleagues were less impressed with comfort. Shure lists the headset’s weight as 334 g in its Gen 2 user guide. A comfortable fit depends on head shape, clamp pressure and personal preference, so where possible try the headphones on before committing to long sessions.

No weatherproofing is established

Tom’s Guide lists the lack of weatherproofing as a con. The available evidence does not establish that the AONIC 50 Gen 2 is protected against rain or sweat, so it is not a sensible choice if you need headphones for wet conditions or sweaty workouts.

Is the Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2 worth buying?

It is worth considering if you value sound quality, want app-based parametric EQ, appreciate the wired and wireless options, and are comfortable with Shure’s claimed battery life. It is a less compelling fit if your first priority is the strongest possible ANC, reliable microphone performance for frequent calls, a particularly light headset or weather protection.

What to compare before you choose

  • Noise cancellation: Compare independent assessments of transport-noise isolation if travel is your main use.
  • Sound and EQ: Decide whether the sound profile suits you and whether app-based parametric EQ is valuable.
  • Fit and weight: Consider the listed 334 g weight and whether the headband and earcups suit your head.
  • Calls: Look for microphone samples or reviews that match your call environment.
  • Battery: Treat Shure’s up-to-45-hour rating and quick-charge claim as manufacturer figures, not a promise of identical real-world runtime.
  • Devices and codecs: Confirm your source supports the codec you want; codec availability depends on both ends of the connection.
  • Weather exposure and price: Do not assume weather protection, and compare the actual current price against alternatives.
