If a ShrinkTheWeb screenshot looks old, first identify which copy is stale: the Drupal module’s thumbnail cache, an image stored by your application, or a browser, CDN, or image proxy. The historical Drupal integration has local cache controls, but the available ShrinkTheWeb guides do not establish a current API parameter or endpoint that forces a fresh capture. Don’t assume a parameter used by another provider works with ShrinkTheWeb.
Find which cache layer is serving the old image
A screenshot can pass through several separate layers before it appears on a page. A new upstream capture will not necessarily replace a thumbnail already stored by Drupal or an application, and a current file can still be hidden by a browser or delivery cache.
- Drupal module: Does the integration reuse a locally stored thumbnail?
- Application: Does your site copy or store the screenshot separately from Drupal?
- Delivery: Could a browser, CDN, or image proxy be returning an older copy?
- ShrinkTheWeb: Can you verify that the upstream capture itself is current using the documentation available to your account?
Change or inspect one layer at a time. If you can compare the upstream image with the image served on your page, that comparison helps narrow down where the old copy is coming from.
Check the Drupal thumbnail cache first
Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 setup pages
The Drupal.org setup guides for the Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 ShrinkTheWeb Screenshot Thumbnails integrations describe a configured thumbnail folder and a setting for how many days cached images remain unchanged. Both pages were last updated on 4 March 2019: Drupal 7 setup and usage and Drupal 8 setup and usage.

In the module’s settings, check the configured thumbnail folder and the cache-age setting. Confirm that you are examining the directory and settings used by the installed integration, then follow the module’s documented behavior for refreshing or replacing a thumbnail. These historical guides do not establish current behavior for every installed version.
Check whether your installed version supports “Refresh ALL”
The Drupal project page records a “Refresh ALL” feature, but that does not guarantee the control exists or behaves the same way in your installed release. Check the installed module version and its available settings before relying on it. The Drupal.org project page also said the Drupal project appeared unsupported as of 31 January 2022. That warning concerns the Drupal project; it does not, by itself, establish whether the ShrinkTheWeb screenshot service is available.

Verify the upstream capture without guessing at API syntax
If your current ShrinkTheWeb account documentation lets you obtain or inspect a new capture, compare that image with the one Drupal or your application displays. If the upstream image is current and the displayed one is not, investigate local storage and delivery caches next.
The available ShrinkTheWeb guides describe capture parameters and Drupal cache settings, but they do not substantiate a current force-refresh endpoint or parameter. Verify exact request syntax against current documentation for your account. Do not copy fresh, a TTL option, or other cache controls from another screenshot provider and assume ShrinkTheWeb accepts them.

Inspect application, browser, CDN, and image-proxy copies
If the upstream response is current but the page still shows an old image, check whether your application has kept its own file or URL, and whether the browser, CDN, or image proxy has cached the delivered image. This is a general diagnostic approach, not a documented ShrinkTheWeb-specific cache behavior.
Other providers illustrate why these layers matter, but their behavior should not be attributed to ShrinkTheWeb. ScreenshotOne says fetching its cache URL does not regenerate a capture; ScreenshotEngine documents possible delays from browser and CDN caching. See ScreenshotOne’s caching documentation and ScreenshotEngine’s evergreen screenshot feature documentation.

When checking a delivery layer, establish whether it is serving the same URL or stored file as before, and use that layer’s own documented method to revalidate or replace its copy. Avoid changing multiple caches simultaneously: doing so can make it harder to tell which layer caused the stale result.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see | Likely place to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The old image is in Drupal’s thumbnail folder | Drupal module’s local cache | Check the configured folder, cache-age setting, and whether the installed version offers “Refresh ALL.” |
| A new upstream image is available, but Drupal still displays the old one | Drupal thumbnail cache or application-stored copy | Trace which local file or URL the page uses, then refresh that copy using the relevant system’s documented controls. |
| The application’s image is current, but a browser or delivery URL appears old | Browser, CDN, or image proxy | Check the delivery layer’s cache and revalidation behavior; provider-specific controls are not ShrinkTheWeb syntax. |
| You cannot establish how to request a new upstream capture | ShrinkTheWeb API documentation | Consult current documentation for your account. The available guides do not confirm a force-refresh request parameter. |
Choose an alternative only if you need documented cache controls
If you are evaluating a replacement rather than fixing the existing integration, compare services by whether they document per-request freshness, whether retrieving a cache URL triggers a render, how long results persist, and whether downstream caches can still serve an old image. For example, ScreenshotAPI.net documents a fresh parameter and TTL behavior in its cached and fresh screenshot documentation; that does not show ShrinkTheWeb supports the same syntax.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the old Drupal module setting refresh the ShrinkTheWeb service?
The documented Drupal cache controls concern locally stored thumbnails; the available guides do not establish that changing them forces a new upstream capture.
Does the Drupal project warning mean ShrinkTheWeb itself is unavailable?
No. The project page’s warning, dated 31 January 2022, refers to the Drupal project appearing unsupported, not the status of the screenshot service.
