Usually, no—if Windows is installed on an SSD. ReadyBoost is a removable-storage disk cache, not extra RAM, and an SSD-based PC generally has little to gain from it. If your PC runs Windows from a hard disk drive (HDD) and Windows offers the ReadyBoost control for a suitable USB flash drive or memory card, trying a device you already own is reasonable. Don’t buy one expecting a guaranteed speedup: first identify whether disk activity, memory, or something else is actually slowing the PC.

What does ReadyBoost do?

ReadyBoost lets Windows use eligible removable flash storage as a cache for disk data. In practical terms, it is an additional place for Windows to keep data it may need again; it does not convert the USB drive or memory card into system memory. A flash drive configured for ReadyBoost therefore does not increase the amount of physical RAM installed in the computer.

That distinction matters because different bottlenecks call for different remedies. When a PC is short on physical memory, adding compatible RAM addresses memory capacity more directly. When Windows runs from an HDD that is the storage bottleneck, a compatible SSD replacement addresses the system drive itself. ReadyBoost is a narrower option: it may be worth a no-cost trial on an HDD-based computer if Windows accepts a removable device, but the available guidance does not establish a universal performance gain or a reliable speedup figure.

When is ReadyBoost worth trying?

It is most plausible as a trial when Windows is installed on an HDD, the computer feels slow during disk-heavy work, and the ReadyBoost tab offers the option to use an existing device. The trial is less compelling if the PC already has an SSD as its Windows system drive, or if the slowdown points to memory, CPU activity, startup apps, low storage space, or pending updates instead.

Before deciding, gather five facts: your Windows version and build, whether the system drive is an HDD or SSD, how much physical RAM the PC has, what symptom you see, and whether the removable drive’s Properties actually shows a usable ReadyBoost control. Those facts prevent a common mistake: treating any slow computer as a storage-cache problem.

Option Bottleneck it addresses When it is relevant Cost and compatibility considerations
ReadyBoost Caches disk data on eligible removable flash storage Potentially worth trying on an HDD-based PC if Windows offers the control Try an existing eligible USB drive or memory card first; acceptance and benefit are not guaranteed
Compatible internal SSD Replaces an HDD-based system drive More directly relevant when the HDD is the storage bottleneck Check the specific PC’s drive compatibility before buying; not every PC supports every upgrade
Compatible physical RAM Increases installed memory capacity Relevant when the observed problem is memory capacity Check the specific PC’s memory compatibility and upgrade options before buying
Windows performance checks Identifies activity or maintenance issues rather than adding hardware Useful before spending money, whatever storage type the PC has Use Task Manager and review storage space, startup apps, and updates

How can I check what is making my PC slow?

Start with the symptom rather than the accessory. Microsoft’s performance guidance points users to Task Manager’s CPU, memory, and disk information, as well as storage space, startup apps, and updates. These checks help distinguish a disk bottleneck from high memory use or another cause; ReadyBoost should not be treated as a general-purpose speed switch.

Look at CPU, memory, and disk activity

Open Task Manager and examine its CPU, Memory, and Disk information while the slowdown is happening. A disk-heavy symptom on a PC whose Windows system drive is an HDD makes ReadyBoost more relevant to consider. If memory is the apparent constraint, a flash cache does not add physical RAM. If CPU activity is the issue, the ReadyBoost premise does not address it.

Check basic maintenance factors

Review available storage space, startup apps, and whether Windows has updates waiting. A crowded drive, unnecessary startup activity, or updates can affect responsiveness without showing that ReadyBoost is the right remedy. Resolve an obvious maintenance issue before attributing the slowdown to the removable-storage cache.

Does ReadyBoost work better with an HDD or an SSD?

The system drive is the key distinction. On an HDD-based Windows installation, a cache on eligible flash storage may be worth trying if Windows accepts it. On an SSD-based system, the rationale is weak: Microsoft Community Technical Support says an SSD is already fast and ReadyBoost will not be able to improve its performance. Windows may also withhold the option on such systems.

This is not a promise that every HDD computer will feel faster. ReadyBoost eligibility only means Windows allows the device to be used; it does not prove that disk caching is the cause of the slowdown or that the change will be noticeable. Nor does a large drive or a newer USB-generation label guarantee that Windows will accept it or that it will help.

If the HDD is the main limitation and the computer supports a drive replacement, a compatible SSD is the more direct way to change the system storage. If the real constraint is memory capacity, compatible RAM is the direct category to investigate. Check the computer’s own upgrade compatibility before buying either component; neither upgrade is possible on every machine or guaranteed to solve every performance problem.

How do I turn on ReadyBoost in Windows 10?

First, use a USB flash drive or memory card you already have if possible. Microsoft Community Technical Support’s 2024 device guidance calls for at least 500 MB of free space and a high data-transfer rate. That is an eligibility guideline, not a performance promise; available capacity alone does not ensure that Windows will accept the device.

  1. Insert the removable device. Connect the USB flash drive or insert the memory card into a compatible slot.
  2. Open File Explorer. Locate the removable drive in the file list.
  3. Open its properties. Right-click the drive and choose Properties.
  4. Check the ReadyBoost tab. If Windows offers a usable control, open ReadyBoost and choose Use this device.
  5. Follow the available Windows controls. If the option is unavailable, do not assume that buying a larger or newer USB drive will fix the problem. Check the system drive type and device eligibility first.

This is the documented Windows 10 workflow. A working feature does not mean the operating system remains supported: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. ReadyBoost does not restore security support, so treat operating-system support as a separate issue from whether the tab still appears.

Why is the ReadyBoost tab missing or unavailable?

A missing or unusable tab means Windows is not offering ReadyBoost for that particular setup; it is not proof that the flash drive needs to be replaced. Check the likely causes in order before spending money.

  • The PC uses an SSD for Windows. An SSD-based system generally has little reason to use this cache, and Windows may not offer it.
  • The removable device does not meet Windows’ checks. The Microsoft Community Technical Support guidance specifies at least 500 MB free and a high data-transfer rate. A device’s advertised capacity or USB generation alone does not guarantee acceptance.
  • The system or Windows version does not expose the control. Check the version and build, then inspect the drive’s Properties again. Do not infer universal support or removal from a single PC’s result.
  • The setup’s actual bottleneck may be elsewhere. Use Task Manager and the maintenance checks before treating the missing tab as the obstacle to solving a storage problem.

The available Windows 11 guidance is conflicting and does not establish a universal rule. Microsoft-hosted answers include an Independent Advisor who discusses the option being absent on SSD systems and another who says ReadyBoost management was removed from Windows 11. Those are conflicting advisor statements, not a definitive Microsoft product specification. The examined official removed-features list does not settle the question. Treat Windows 11 availability as specific to the PC and build: check whether that machine’s drive Properties presents a usable ReadyBoost control rather than assuming that all Windows 11 computers support it or that all have lost it.

Should I buy a flash drive just for ReadyBoost?

Usually not before checking the computer. If Windows runs from an SSD, buying a flash drive for ReadyBoost is not a sensible first move. If the system drive is an HDD, confirm that Windows offers the feature and try a suitable device already on hand before considering a purchase. No specific flash-drive model or current retail price is established here, and no device can be promised to improve performance.

A compatible SD memory card is a conditional alternative when the PC has a suitable card slot and Windows accepts the card. As with USB storage, a capacity or connector label is not a guarantee of ReadyBoost eligibility or a noticeable result.

Is a ReadyBoost drive the same as a Windows installation USB?

No. A ReadyBoost device is removable storage used as a cache; Windows installation media serves a separate setup purpose. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance calls for a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB and warns that its contents are deleted when the media is created. That 8 GB figure is for the installation-media workflow, not a ReadyBoost requirement.

Keep the purpose clear before preparing a drive: installation-media creation is destructive to its existing contents, while ReadyBoost is a separate Windows feature that may not be available on the PC. Do not buy an 8 GB drive on the assumption that this installation-media specification predicts ReadyBoost performance.

What should I do if ReadyBoost is not the answer?

Match the remedy to the evidence instead of buying a generic “speed-up” accessory. If the HDD is the storage bottleneck, investigate whether the computer supports a compatible internal SSD. If memory capacity is the issue, check whether compatible physical RAM can be added. If neither diagnosis fits, review CPU, disk, and memory activity along with storage space, startup apps, and updates before choosing an upgrade.

These are categories to investigate, not guarantees: device-specific compatibility matters, and a storage or RAM change will not necessarily resolve every cause of sluggishness. ReadyBoost is best treated as a limited, reversible option to consider only when Windows offers it for an HDD-based system—not as a replacement for diagnosing the PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 4 GB of RAM meet the Windows 11 minimum?

Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications list 4 GB of RAM as a minimum requirement. Meeting that baseline is not a guarantee that a particular workload will run smoothly, and it does not mean ReadyBoost supplies additional physical memory.

Can I use an SD card for ReadyBoost instead of a USB stick?

A memory card can be considered if the computer has a compatible card slot and Windows accepts it in the drive’s ReadyBoost properties. The presence of a slot alone does not establish that a particular card or PC will qualify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will making a Windows installation USB erase files already on it?

Microsoft’s installation-media instructions call for a blank drive and warn that creating the media deletes its contents. Copy off anything important before using a drive for that separate setup task.
