A mechanical keyboard may suit you if you prefer the feel, sound, or customization of individual switches. It is not automatically better, faster, or more ergonomic than another keyboard: the right choice depends on switch feel, noise tolerance, layout, and how the keyboard fits your workstation.
What makes a keyboard mechanical?
A mechanical keyboard has an individual mechanical switch beneath each key. Switch designs vary, so keyboards can feel and sound quite different. That variation is a reason to choose by preference rather than assume every mechanical keyboard offers the same typing experience. RTINGS’ guide to mechanical switches describes the main feel categories and how switch choice affects sound and feel.
Mechanical and membrane keyboards can be compared on factors such as feel, sound, durability, and performance, but those are dimensions to evaluate—not proof that one type is universally superior. RTINGS’ comparison guide discusses these differences.
Which mechanical keyboard switch should you choose?
Start with the kind of feedback you want from each keypress. The three broad categories are linear, tactile, and clicky; the labels describe a general feel, not a guarantee of a particular sound level for every keyboard.

| Switch category | What it feels or sounds like | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth key travel without a tactile bump. | You prefer an even press without a noticeable bump. |
| Tactile | A noticeable bump during the keypress. | You want feedback you can feel as you press a key. |
| Clicky | A tactile feel with an audible click. | You like audible feedback and your surroundings can accommodate it. |
These descriptions come from RTINGS’ switch guide. The keyboard’s full design and its surroundings also affect how loud it seems, so a switch category alone cannot tell you exactly how a particular model will sound.
Are mechanical keyboards too loud for an office?
It depends on the keyboard, the room, and the people nearby. Clicky switches add an audible click, while sound from the complete keyboard can vary beyond the switch category. If you share a workspace with coworkers, family, or roommates, consider whether that sound will be disruptive; a quieter switch may matter more in a shared setting. The switch guide identifies shared environments as a reason to weigh noise tolerance, but it does not establish a universal noise level for each category.

If you can, try the switch feel before choosing a keyboard. A mechanical keyboard switch tester is one optional way to compare presses; the cited switch guide explains why switch feel differs but does not review or recommend a particular tester.
What layout and setup should you consider?
Choose a layout around the keys and space you need for your tasks. A full-size board or a more compact one may suit different desks and workflows; the available guidance does not establish one layout as best for everyone. Also consider who will use the keyboard and where it will sit, especially if sound carries into a shared space.

Typing comfort depends on the whole workstation, not just the switch. OSHA recommends placing the keyboard directly in front of you, relaxing your shoulders, keeping your elbows close to your body, and aligning straight wrists with your forearms. It also advises considering the keyboard alongside the pointer, wrist or palm rests, and the rest of the setup. See OSHA’s computer-workstation keyboard guidance.
Does a mechanical keyboard prevent wrist pain?
No such benefit is established for mechanical keyboards as a type. OSHA says alternative keyboards may help maintain neutral wrist postures, but its guidance does not conclusively show that alternative keyboards prevent discomfort and injury. The practical aim is to position the keyboard and the rest of your workstation to support a comfortable posture—not to treat a keyboard purchase as injury prevention.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether one is right for you
- Decide what feedback you prefer: smooth linear travel, a tactile bump, or a clicky press.
- Account for nearby people: think about whether keyboard noise is acceptable where you work or live.
- Match the layout to your tasks: choose a form that provides the keys you need and fits your desk.
- Check the workstation fit: place the keyboard in front of you and assess shoulder, elbow, and wrist alignment as part of your full setup.
- Try the feel if possible: compare switches in person or with an optional tester, without assuming a category guarantees a specific sound level.
