Keep your iPhone if it reliably handles your daily needs, still gets the latest iOS version compatible with its model, and has acceptable battery life. Consider replacing it when a specific problem—such as a missing feature you need, poor runtime, recurring repairs, or insufficient storage—makes the cost worthwhile. Before buying, check whether a repair or battery service would solve the problem for less.
Start with the problem you want to solve
Age alone, or the arrival of a new model, is not a reason to replace a working phone. Identify what is no longer working for you: an app or feature you need, unreliable hardware, battery life that no longer lasts through your day, or storage that is consistently inadequate. If nothing concrete is getting in the way and the phone is dependable, keeping it is a reasonable choice.
There is no universal upgrade interval established here. Your decision depends on your model, the tasks you use it for, the condition of its hardware, and the cost of your alternatives.
Check your model and iOS compatibility
First identify the exact iPhone: open Settings > General > About. Then open Settings > General > Software Update to see the latest iOS version available for that device. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide lists supported models and explains how to check for an update.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Compatibility is model-specific; do not assume your phone can run every current iOS version or feature. Feature availability can also vary by model, region, language, and carrier. If the phone no longer supports a version or feature you need, that is a practical reason to consider replacing it. The compatibility guidance does not establish a guaranteed number of update years for each iPhone.
Decide whether the battery is the real issue
A phone that needs charging too often may have a worn battery rather than a problem that requires replacing the whole device. Apple explains that rechargeable batteries lose capacity and performance over time in its genuine iPhone battery guidance. Consider how long the phone lasts in your normal use, then request a service estimate for your specific model and location using Apple’s iPhone repair and service options.

Service availability and cost vary. Apple’s repair page says in its AppleCare section, “We’ll replace your battery for no extra charge if the capacity drops below 80%.” Treat that as plan-context guidance, not a universal offer: check your own AppleCare coverage and applicable terms.
If battery service restores the runtime you need, compare its cost with the net cost of a replacement. If the phone also has other significant problems, weigh those separately rather than assuming a battery replacement will fix them.

Compare keeping, repairing, and replacing
Use the same needs and costs to judge each option. A new phone is useful only if its improvements matter to you; the newest or most expensive model is not automatically the right choice.
| Option | What to assess | Best fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Keep | Whether the phone meets your essential needs, receives a compatible iOS update, and remains reliable enough in daily use. | There is no important limitation and its battery and hardware are acceptable. |
| Repair | The specific fault, local service availability, estimate for your model, and whether the repair addresses the problem you identified. | A battery or hardware service can restore the function you need for less than replacing the phone. |
| Replace | Current price, features you will actually use, size, storage, camera and performance needs, plus the verified trade-in or sale value of your old phone. | A required feature or persistent reliability, battery, or capacity problem makes the net cost worthwhile. |
When comparing new iPhones, Apple’s iPhone comparison page lists current models, including iPhone 17e. Prices and availability can change, so check current details for your region rather than relying on a static figure. Compare only the differences relevant to you: device size, storage, camera, performance, accessibility needs, and price.

Calculate the replacement’s net cost
Do not base the decision on a headline trade-in amount. Apple says its estimate depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition, and that inspection can change the value. Request a current quote for your exact phone through Apple Trade In, then compare it with the replacement price. Include any repair cost, carrier or financing terms, and the value to you of keeping the current phone. A trade-in estimate is not a guaranteed final value.
